🎄🐾 12 days of Christmas health tips - Day 2: Pet proofing for Christmas🐾🎄

The festive season is upon us, but while we’re decking the halls, let’s remember that some holiday decorations can pose a risk to our furry friends! 🐾

Here are some common Christmas hazards to watch out for:

🎄Tinsel and Ribbons: Cats love shiny things, but swallowing tinsel or ribbons can cause blockages that require surgery.

🎄Christmas Lights: Chewing on electrical cords can result in burns or even electrocution. Use cord protectors and unplug lights when you’re not home.

🎄Holiday Plants: Poinsettias, mistletoe, and holly are toxic to pets if ingested. Opt for pet-safe greenery or keep plants high up.

Let’s keep the holidays merry and safe for everyone! If your pet gets into trouble, Vetwest is here to help. Call us anytime for advice ☎️ 🐶🐱

🎄🐾 12 days of Christmas health tips - Day 1; Christmas Treats -Think Twice Before Sharing! 🐾🎄

The holidays are a time for feasting, but some of our favourite Christmas foods can be dangerous for pets! 🚫🐶🐱

🍗 What to Avoid:

❌ Cooked Bones – They can splinter and cause serious harm.
❌ Chocolate & Sweets – Toxic to pets, especially if they contain xylitol.
❌ Stuffing & Gravy – Onions, garlic, and rich sauces are no-go.
❌ Fatty foods - feeding fatty foods to our furry friends can make them unwell and predispose them to some diseases such as pancreatitis
❌ Christmas Pudding & Mince Pies – Raisins & sultanas are toxic to pets.

Let’s keep the holiday spirit and our furry friends safe! If your pet gets into something they shouldn’t, don’t hesitate to contact us. 🎅🐾

🌾🐾Beware of Grass Seeds – Stanley’s Story 🐾🌾

Grass seeds might look harmless, but they can cause serious problems for our pets. Just ask beautiful little Stanley who recently had a brush with one of these pesky seeds!

Stanley visited our team at Vetwest Armadale-Byford where we discovered a grass seed had lodged deep inside his ear canal and had perforated his ear drum😢

💉 Stanley needed sedation so we could safely remove the seed and relieve his discomfort.

Thankfully, he’s now back to his happy, playful self, but it’s a reminder of how quickly grass seeds can cause trouble! 🐾

🌾 Grass seeds might look harmless, but they can cause big problems for pets, especially during this season! These tiny seeds can:

⚠️ Embed in Paws: Causing painful abscesses and infections.
⚠️ Get Stuck in Ears: Leading to irritation, head shaking, and potential hearing issues.
⚠️ Enter Noses or Eyes: Resulting in discomfort or serious injury.
⚠️ Travel Under the Skin: Causing swelling and requiring removal, often surgically.

💡 Signs to Watch For:
🐾 Excessive licking or limping.
🐾 Persistent sneezing or pawing at the face.
🐾 Red, swollen areas on the skin or around the paws.

🚨 If you notice any of these symptoms please contact us – grass seeds can move quickly and lead to serious complications.

Keep your pets safe by regularly checking their paws and fur after outdoor adventures 🐶🐾🐱
