🦠 We have seen a spike in parvovirus cases this week in the greater Lismore area 🦠

The ONLY way to ensure your dog is completely protected is through vaccination 💉. Vaccination is very safe and very effective.

Parvovirus is shed into the environment in faeces by carrier dogs and can remain in the environment for several years.

If your dog is not vaccinated, look out for symptoms including lethargy, not eating, vomiting, and bloody diarrhoea. Treatment is very extensive and not always effective. 🩺

If your dog is showing any of these signs or you would like to book in for a vaccination, please PHONE the clinic on (02) 6622 0033.

Snake bites in dogs and cats

Often when your animal is bitten by a snake you may not even know it has happened. Here are some signs to watch out for even if you do not initially suspect a snake bite.
Signs that your dog has been bitten by a snake:
· Sudden weakness and collapse
· Vomiting
· Salivation
· Trembling
· Followed by an apparent recovery
· Blood clotting problems such as red gums, blood in urine and blood coming from eyes
· Pupil dilation

Signs that your cat has been bitten by a snake:
· Difficulty walking or balancing
· Weakness
· Vomiting
· Coma
· Flaccid paralysis with ability to move tail

What to do if you suspect your dog or cat has been bitten:
· Contact your vet as soon as possible
· Keep your dog as immobile as possible
and try not to over excite them
· If you have seen the snake, try and identify it or take a picture but don’t try to catch it
· If you can see a bite wound apply a firm bandage over the site but do not apply a torniquet
· If possible, carry your dog to the car to limit their movement

🚨🚨ATTENTION ‼️ 🚨🚨

Everyday our clinic is full of tick paralysis patients and despite our team’s best efforts not all have recovered.

We can not STRESS the urgency of up to date tick prevention enough‼️

It's important to be aware of the potential risks that tick paralysis can pose to our furry family members. Tick paralysis is a serious condition that affects dogs, cats and other species. It can lead to severe health issues if not addressed promptly. Here's what you need to know:

**1. Know the Culprits:** Tick paralysis is primarily caused by certain species of ticks, being the paralysis tick. These ticks release toxins while feeding, which can affect a dog's nervous system.

**2. Recognise the Signs:** Keep an eye out for signs of tick paralysis, such as weakness, wobbling, loss of coordination, vomiting, coughing, and difficulty breathing. In severe cases, it can even lead to paralysis of the respiratory muscles, which can be life-threatening.

**3. Prevention is Key:** The best way to protect your pet is through tick prevention measures.

**4. Daily Tick Checks:** During tick season, make it a habit to thoroughly check your dog for ticks after outdoor activities, paying close attention to areas like ears, neck, and between toes. Prompt tick removal can help prevent paralysis.

**5. Seek Immediate Help:** If you suspect your dog may have tick paralysis, don't hesitate to contact our clinic immediately. Time is critical in treating this condition, and our team is here to provide the necessary care.

**6. Treatment:** Treatment for tick paralysis typically involves tick removal, supportive care, antitoxin administration, fur clipped and sometimes oxygen therapy. The earlier it's diagnosed and treated, the better the chances of a full recovery.

Remember, your pet's health and safety are our top priorities. If you have any concerns or questions about tick paralysis or tick prevention, please don't hesitate to reach out to our veterinary team.

Stay vigilant, stay safe, and let's keep those tails wagging!

Here at Lismore Veterinary Clinic our friendly team offers professional 24hr service for all your veterinary needs including after hour’s emergencies.
Our Vets work extremely hard in providing clients with our after hours emergency service. Our vets are not only prompt in attending to your emergencies but are also considerate and understanding of costs that are involved in providing this service. It is important to realise that if our vets see you for an after hour’s emergency they will usually have worked a full day that day and be working a full day the following day.

Our clinic is one of the only clinics offering an after hours service in the area and we feel that we have a degree of obligation to our clients and their animals to continue doing this. The only other alternative is referral to an emergency centre which can involve significant travel times and costs.

Unfortunately while Dr Richard was attending to a 4am emergency call on Sunday morning his car was keyed by a client while he was attending to their puppy. The client had been difficult during the consultation and had gone outside. He did not find the damage to his car until he left the clinic.

As you can imagine this is extremely upsetting, especially when you get out of bed to see their sick animal. When people behave in this manner it has far reaching consequences and ultimately makes us far more reluctant to continue providing this service which is already quite taxing to our staff.

We understand that the majority of people are courteous and appreciative of what we do but we would ask all our customers to remain respectful of all our staff at all times and understand that bad behaviour can have ramifications that impact the whole community.

DID YOU KNOW THAT BLADDER STONES CAN BE AS BIG AS RIVER STONES?! 🪨

Little Luna had been having difficulty urinating for some time when she came to us. When performing a physical exam we took extreme care to palpate the bladder and to our surprise we could feel some solid masses. We proceeded to take x-rays to better understand the nature and position of these masses and couldn’t quite believe our eyes finding several large stones nestled in the bladder.
As you can see in our video, we were able to successfully remove them during surgery. We are sure that Luna would have felt relieved and much lighter after the operation.
We have sent the stones off for analysis so we can create a targeted treatment plan to avoid this happening again. For the time being we wish her a speedy recovery. 🐶🐾🩺

🐾👨‍⚕️DR PIMPLE POPPER!👩‍⚕️🐾

🤒Abscesses are pockets of infections that are created when bacteria gets under the skin. Generally this can occur when the skin barrier breaks, coming into contact with any sort of contamination or foreign body such as wire, nails, gravel.

🩺Dr Richard examined this cow that clearly had a ‘enlarged round lump’ just below its shoulder blade. Before diagnosing this as an abscess he placed a needle into the lump and found it was filled with an opaque yellow fluid.....pus! Once this was confirmed Dr Richard administered some sedation and pain relief to the cow. Then he opened up the abscess with a sterile scalpel to let the pus ooze out (shown in the video).

🐮It is SO important to open up and drain the abscess and then flush out the dead pocket with some betedine/iodine solution to get the tissue to heal up fast! With some rest she will make a full recovery ❤️‍🩹🐄
