Breed specific outlets for puppies-
Do you have a bed destroyer? A yard digger? A bird chaser?
There’s a very good and historic reason for this, namely, we’ve breed and defined our dogs characteristics for hundreds of years to get the the most tenacious ratters- so sorry to your nice new slippers, or the most driven cattle herders- you didn’t want the skin on your hands anyway, right?
Our puppies are doing exactly what they’re meant to do instinctively, so it’s our job to channel this drive towards more beneficial and appropriate outlets.
Examples will include;
Herding breeds will benefit greatly from playing with flirt poles and tug of war.
Training goals for these breeds will be targeted calm socialisation to quick moving stimuli such as runners, cars and birds
Gun dogs will benefit greatly from scent training and find it games. Training goals will include extensive recall and disengaging or “leave it” training.
The biggest recommendation is to extensively research your breed, employ as many different enrichment activities as you can; including food puzzles, chewing items, designated digging areas, and lots of short fun training sessions, and prioritise socialisation and environmental conditioning to raise a well rounded puppy with minimal destruction to your yard and house😉
