Managing horses and ponies prone to laminitis often means stable time and restricted grazing, but what you feed in the stable is just as important as what you take away.

Horses are designed to thrive on fibre. When excess sugars and starches pass into the hindgut, they upset the microbial balance, leading to acidity, inflammation and an increased risk of laminitis. That’s why choosing the right fibre source is essential.

Speedi-Beet™ is a safe and effective option for laminitis-prone horses:
✅ 95% sugar-free with no added molasses
✅ Starch-free, highly digestible fibre
✅ Quick-soaking and versatile to feed

When horses are stabled to manage their grazing, feeding Speedi-Beet™ provides slow-release energy, supports gut health, and helps keep them satisfied without the risk of sugar spikes. It can be fed in small amounts as a carrier for supplements, or in larger quantities to maintain condition, making it an ideal staple for laminitis-safe diets.

For horses prone to laminitis, fibre is more than just roughage - it’s the foundation of digestive health.

When too much sugar or starch passes into the hindgut, it disrupts the microbial balance, leading to inflammation and increasing the risk of laminitis. That’s why choosing the right feed is crucial.

✅ High-fibre, low sugar feeds like Speedi-Beet and Barastoc Fibre-Beet® Mash support gut health and help protect against sugar spikes.
❌ High-starch diets (like grain-heavy mixes) can worsen weight gain and laminitis risk.

Top tip: Before turnout, feed Barastoc Fibre-Beet® Mash or Speedi-Beet to help stabilise sugar intake from lush spring pasture.

When it comes to successful breeding, great genetics are only half the story. The difference between a good foal and a future athlete often comes down to the 1% - the fine-tuned nutrition that supports bone strength, fertility, growth and resilience.

At Barastoc, we call it nutritional fitness. It’s about feeding smarter, not just feeding more. From broodmares with shifting requirements throughout pregnancy to young foals growing at lightning speed, our science-backed programs ensure your breeding horses get exactly what they need, when they need it.

And with our no-cost on-farm service package, our equine team can assess your pasture, analyse your program and help you create the best possible start for your foals, tailored to your farm and your budget. Get in touch with us today to find out more!

The first year of a horse’s life is one of the most important for setting them up for long-term health and soundness. From foal to weanling to yearling, young horses can reach 90% of their adult size in just two years, making balanced nutrition absolutely vital.

✅ Before Weaning:
Foals begin nibbling on pasture, hay and even their dam’s hard feed from just a few weeks old. By three months, their nutritional needs outpace what milk alone can provide, meaning supplementary feeding becomes key.

✅ From Weanling to Yearling:
Once fully weaned, youngsters need a diet that supports steady, not rapid, growth to help minimise developmental issues. A 17% protein ration with the right balance of minerals and vitamins will keep bone and muscle development on track.

Barastoc Breed N Grow is specially formulated to support broodmares, breeding stallions, weanlings and yearlings. It’s the #1 feed for weanlings, giving young horses the best chance to grow into strong, healthy adults.
