It's been a while since I've looked after possums but check out these little cuties. They'll soon be released into the wild but in the meantime they're being extremely well fed in readiness for the big day.

Today is "World Pet Memorial Day". Lets post pictures of our babies who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge to celebrate their lives. ❤🌈💔

I'll start. This is my beautiful mare Jess who l lost last August in a tragic paddock accident. Such a gentle girl. Miss her so so much. ❤

A useful article here.

🥶 ❄️ 🌬️ Brr! It’s that time of year that we humans really start to feel the cold! 🥶 ❄️ 🌬️

But did you know just because you feel cold doesn’t mean your horse does!

Science tells us that humans have a narrow thermoneutral zone (the thermoneutral zone is the range of temperatures where a human or animal is comfortable with no additional clothes) of 25-30°C.

However horses have a much wider and cooler thermoneutral zone of 5-25°C. So while you’re shivering, it’s likely your horse is nice and comfortable! They produce plenty of internal heat via their fermentation process in the large colon, so all that hay and grass really does keep them warm. In colder climates, horses can have an even lower thermoneutral zone, acclimatizing to even cooler temperatures!

So what does this mean realistically?

🧥 You can use your knowledge of the thermoneutral zone to prevent over rugging (which in itself can cause discomfort, sweating, skin conditions and even weight loss)

🧥 If your horse is clipped, underweight, geriatric or has other health conditions, they may need extra rugging even in the thermoneutral zone

🧥 Providing shelter is also very important

Many owners are guilty of over rugging - usually because we feel sorry for our horses assuming they feel the same discomfort as we do! However being nice and “rugged up” like us is likely far too hot for most horses - less is more for comfort in many cases.

As with so many things with horses, it’s always best to get to know your own horse. But if in doubt try shedding a rug - the results might surprise you!

Just a few of the beautiful faces I've been looking after lately. I'll post pics from my Xmas/New Year jobs at a later date (as a few of you know the start to this year has been incredibly difficult for me personally and l wasn't in the mindset to post pics). I hope you enjoy these babies though. ❤

🥵 🌡️ ☀️ It sure is HOT!! 🥵 🌡️ ☀️

These hot days can be a challenge for looking after our equine friends, with concerns about cooling, water intake and impaction colic coming to the fore.

Here’s some of our vets’ top tips for keeping your horse happy and healthy in the hot weather!

🌡️ Use the wet bulb globe temperature reading (WBGT), which takes into account both environmental temperature and humidity, to assess if the weather is suitable for riding

💧 Recent studies have shown that rapid scraping of water after application is not beneficial to cooling. Instead, rapid repeated application of cold water is more effective

🧊 Horses love a cool treat in the hot weather! Grated carrot or apple frozen into ice blocks is often very popular and provides cooling enrichment! It can also help to increase water intake in those horses who don’t like to drink enough in the hot weather

Let us know your tips for dealing with the heat in the comments and don’t forget to share the knowledge!

I'd definitely Sponsor a class like this one. I might even take part. 😂😂🥂🥂

I finished looking after two of my absolute favourite furbabies today. The very handsome Dusty (red) & sweet little Jenna (blue). Jenna gives the best hugs (I've got the bruises to prove it, lol) & Dusty reminded me so much of my beloved Bob dog (now deceased) that l had to hold back the tears on the first couple of days l was there. Everyday I'd take them for a lap around the property with stop off at the dam for the obligatory dip, lol. I'm gonna miss seeing their beautiful faces. ❤
