Join us for a training session with our puppies. In these sessions we aim to grow our pups’ confidence and optimism in the face of unstable, elevated and wobbly surfaces. Initially the puppies startle when going over the seesaw, now they fly over it with confidence and seek out the wobble board. All of these obstacles once triggered their startle reflex but repeated positive exposures have resulted in desensitisation and habituation so much so that they now choose to incorporate the equipment in their play. The act of going on the equipment is now inherently reinforcing, hence why the puppies choose to repeat these learned behaviours. We’re also rewarding the puppies for calm behaviour when they offer four feet on the floor and we’re starting to see some lovely sits for attention and treats. #puppytraining #dogtrainingisfun #puppiesofaustralia
The first few weeks of our pups’ life in a few seconds ❤️ mostly cuddles but there’s a lot of cleaning, food prep, setting up and problem solving going on in the background. Even after being involved in dog breeding for 30 years, I’m still learning and each litter is different from the last and benefits from a customised approach to set them up for the best start in life.
I was having difficulty at the 4 week mark with the puppies not toileting on the grass loo, instead they were using the puppy pads (which I put on the floor on top of their reusable puppy pads to enable a fast clean up of any accidents quickly). It was chaos! I was puzzled that they were confused! I went back over my process and realised that I’d made their pen too big too soon and this meant that they had too many choices for where to toilet. So I made the pen smaller and made sure I had a well defined area for sleeping, eating and another for toileting. And that was all they needed, this set them up for success and now at 6 weeks they’re reliably getting all their 💩 on the grass loo and most of their wees. I never blame the puppies for slow progress in training, I always take responsibility and change the environment and my approach, to give them the best chance of succeeding.

A little snippet from our puppy training session today with our last two puppies. We worked on building the foundations of boundary training. Boundary training has many benefits but the most significant being developing calmness and independence. By building value for the bed or crate, the puppy quickly starts to reliably offer the behaviour and we can then start to add in a cue which could be "bed" or something similar that you can use when you want the dog to go to their bed.

Missing our puppies with many going to their new homes over the weekend.
I thought I’d share a video I took last week of our puppy sleeping area and bedtime routine.
I’m always working to ensure our puppies are exposed to environmental enrichment in their days and nights from about 3 weeks of age. In this video I discuss how I use stuffed Kongs, food puzzles and snuffle mats to develop our pups’ tolerance to frustration - an important life skill. Environmental enrichment involves providing physical and social activities for our dogs and puppies that encourage them to use their brain and might involve sniffing, digging, scratching, licking, balancing, training sessions etc. Brains in richer, more stimulating environments have higher rates of synaptogenesis and more complex dendrite arbors, leading to increased brain activity.

Crate training is going well - our puppies start spending alone time in a crate from the time they turn 6 weeks old. Brief periods of 20 minutes while I’m working at my desk or preparing food in the kitchen. This teaches our puppies that our presence doesn’t mean they always have access to us and sets them up for a life where they’ll be comfortable being independent of their owners (if they keep up this training) and reducing the likelihood of them suffering from separation anxiety related behaviours. From 3 weeks of age we have open crates in their sleeping area and outdoor areas (once they’re outside) and hide tasty treats inside and during training sessions they get rewarded for showing an interest in the crate. Lots of positive experiences is what it’s all about.

A video from when our mini doodle puppies were 6 weeks old - Mr Silver having his weekly grooming session. We get our puppies accustomed to grooming from the time they’re just one week old with weekly nail trims. By the time they’re 3 weeks old we start trimming around their bottoms, then their feet, cleaning ears, brushing, comb, the sound of clippers etc so by the time they leave us from 8 weeks of age, they’ve had lots of positive, calm exposures to being groomed. After-all, it’s going to be a big part of their lives so we went it to be as stress-free as possible!
A flashback training session with Piccolo poodle - Finn was in my tummy and our house was much quieter 😂 he’s added another dimension to our training and puppy rearing. Toddlers are novelty machines! #dogtraining #memories

Family time - A morning with our mini groodle puppies
A typical morning spent with our mini groodle puppies - lots of cuddles and mooching about. Piccolo (dad) makes an appearance while maintaining a safe distance from his puppies (they have sharp teeth!) - see if you can spot him!

Morning grooming sessions - a positive weekly experience for our puppies since two weeks of age. I like to think of it as a time to bond with each puppy and so nail trimming, brushing and trimming hair, isn’t stressful. #puplife #doggrooming
