(146)

We believe passionately in providing exceptional veterinary care and building lasting relationships with our patients and their owners. The House Call Vet is a comprehensive and modern veterinary practice that combines traditional veterinary clinics with an advanced house call service. With our fleet of house call vehicles and network of veterinary hospitals, we are able to care for pets across Br

isbane. Our custom designed Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs) act as our consult rooms, fanning out from our clinic bases each morning to see pets across Brisbane. Our MVUs are equipped with microscopes, scales, diagnostic equipment, and a fully-stocked pharmacy so that most pets can be treated at home. If in-clinic care is needed, we provide complimentary patient transport to and from our surgeries. Our state of the art veterinary clinics act as our regional ‘hospitals’, providing comprehensive facilities where pets can be taken when they require in-clinic care such as surgeries, x-rays or dental procedures. Our clinics also perform in-clinic consultations every day for our patients who prefer to come visit us at the clinic! This model ensures that no matter what level of care your pets needs, and regardless of whether you prefer in-home or in-clinic appointments, we can be there for you and your pet.

Guinea pigs are like Pringles - you can't have just one! 🐹

No seriously - in the wild, guinea pigs live in herds because they are social creatures, so they should always be adopted in pairs.

Keeping guinea pigs in pairs (or more) prevents them from becoming lonely and depressed, and ensures they don't become anti-social.

If you have guinea pigs, be sure to bring them to see the THCV team for a checkup!

Do you know why dogs noses are wet? 🐶💧

Truthfully, nobody really knows exactly - but we do have a pretty solid idea.

It's thought that dogs noses are wet to keep their sense of smell as keen as possible.

Dogs secrete a small amount of mucous from their nostrils, which is widely believed to aid in boosting environmental scents 🌳👃

Generally, a dry nose is not a symptom of something being severely wrong - it could simply be possible that your dog is just thirsty or has been out in windy weather.

If your dog displays other symptoms alongside a dry nose, such as scabs, loss of appetite or lethargy, please get them to a vet (that's us!) ASAP.

🐾 PET GROOMING 🐾

Do you know how often you should be washing your pets fur and trimming their claws? While it varies from animal to animal, here's a rough guide on how regularly you should get your furbaby groomed:

🐶 As a general rule, dogs should be bathed every 1-4 weeks depending on their coat type and activity level, and their nails clipped once a month.

🐱 Cats get pretty stressed out when they're bathed, so its best to stick to grooming them either daily or weekly depending on hair length. Natural scratching is recommended to keep cats claws trimmed, however if you need to trim them yourself it is recommended to do so every 3-4 weeks.

🐀 Rats and guinea pigs very rarely need a good wash - perhaps once a year, if needed. Some longer-haired guinea pigs should be spot-washed around their rear to keep the fur around their grease gland maintained. Rats do not need their nails trimmed, however guinea pigs should have theirs trimmed once a month.

Did you know cats are susceptible to UTIs, just like us humans? 🐱

When a cat has a UTI, they may display symptoms such as:

🐾 Frequent urination
🐾 Straining to urinate
🐾 Blood in urine
🐾 Urinating outside the litter box
🐾 Lethargy and loss of appetite
🐾 Excessive licking

To prevent your kitty getting a UTI, ensure they stay properly hydrated, have a clean litter box, follow a nutritious diet, and visit the vet regularly! 🐈

A healthy cat is a happy cat! 🐈‍⬛

Cats can be pretty stoic creatures so sometimes it can be hard to tell if they are unwell. But just like humans, every cat is unique, and symptoms can differ in subtlety and severity.

Here are some ways you can tell if your cat is sick or not:

🐾 Sudden change in mood or behaviour
🐾 Constricted or dilated pupils
🐾 Rapid weight loss or gain
🐾 Notable increase or decrease in being vocal
🐾 Hiding and lethargy

If your cat is displaying any of the above signs, book an appointment with us today:

ROUTINE CHECK UPS 🩺🐾

Do you know often you should be bringing your dogs and cats to the vet for a routine check up?

🐶🐱 Puppies and kittens will generally need to visit the vet 3 to 4 times in their first year of life due to vaccinations and desexing.

🐶🐱 Adult dogs and cats between 1 - 7 years old (depending on breed) should visit annually unless they are unwell.

🐶🐱 Senior dogs and cats aged 7+ should get a check up twice a year as it provides the best chance of capturing age-related disease early.

BIRD NUTRITION 🦜

Different breeds have different needs, but every bird needs a balanced diet consisting of around 60% nutritious pellets and 40% vegetables - in particular leafy greens, grasses and sprouted seeds 🌱

If you're a bird owner, what's your feathered friend's favourite food?

Sometimes it can be a real challenge to get your dog to take their tablets 💊

If you've tried everything from hiding it in their food to using a pet piller and your dog still manages to spit their medication out, speak to a vet about getting their medication formulated differently - such as a liquid or gel.

If you're looking for a rewarding, family-friendly hobby, consider getting some chickens! 🐓🥚

Here's why:

🐔 You'll have an ongoing supply of fresh eggs.
🐔 They're fairly low maintenance and low cost compared to some other pets.
🐔 They'll eat your scraps and produce a natural fertiliser, making them sustainable.
🐔 They are intelligent and have lots of personality - including sass 😂

Just make sure you have a big enough backyard for them to stretch their legs and spread their wings 🐥

Do you know what to do if you come across sick or injured wildlife? 🦇

🐾 MAKE AN ASSESSMENT - is it safe to approach the injured animal? If not, call a professional wildlife handler immediately and do not continue with the next steps.
🐾 STAY CALM - do not make any fast movements or loud noises.
🐾 APPROACH CAUTIOUSLY - if you can, cover them with a blanket or jacket and transfer them to a box or carrier for stability.
🐾 TAKE THEM TO THE VET - transport them as swiftly, quietly, and safely as possible to the nearest vet.

Thank you for caring for our beautiful wildlife 🐨
