In Japan, where pets are considered cherished family members, shopping malls are going the extra mile to make outings more inclusive — by installing escalators designed specifically for pets. These gentle-moving platforms allow dogs, especially small or elderly ones, to travel between floors without the stress of being carried or the risk of stairs or regular escalators.
Unlike standard escalators with open grates that can injure paws, these pet escalators are made with solid, non-slip surfaces and soft inclines, ensuring a safe and comfortable ride. Some even have side rails or transparent barriers to prevent anxious pets from jumping off mid-way. The speeds are slightly slower than regular escalators, and sensors automatically stop the platform if an animal hesitates or stalls, adding an extra layer of safety.
Pet escalators are often installed next to regular human escalators or elevators, and are paired with signage encouraging owners to keep their pets leashed or in specialized strollers. They are typically located in malls that already feature pet-friendly cafes, grooming salons, or dog apparel stores — making it easier for owners to shop, dine, and socialize with their furry companions by their side.
