⭐️ Controversial policy change! ⭐️

Taking kittens into the vet this morning for des*xing I was told by the lady at the front desk, “We have changed our policy and these will be our last kittens that will be des*xed under 5 months old.” I nodded my head in agreement.

I then went in and had an hour long appointment with the senior vet. She explained that occasionally they lose a kitten on the operating table and it really impacts her staff (maybe 4 in the last few years). She said, “Des*xing neonates is not in the best interest of the kittens. So we won’t be doing it any more.” She said the risks are too high for them to continue the practice. She also said they swear an oath to first “do no harm” and that’s really important to them.

I have struggled with this topic for years but felt like I was going up against Goliath - cat fanciers in general, other breeders, the RSPCA, and local Councils all hold to the dominant belief that early des*xing is best practice. Prevailing online opinion is that breeders who don’t early des*x are irresponsible backyard breeders. This is not fair or accurate.

I have little interest in what other breeders choose to do with their kittens but I’m not comfortable with taking the chance on our babies. I don’t agree early des*xing is safe and in line with my vet’s recommendations, I won’t be doing it any longer.

The times are changing and breeders need to listen to their vets (instead of the other way around). Most vets recommend des*xing kittens at 6 months old. I find it interesting the breeders who constantly promote HCM testing, and discredit breeders who don’t, are also perfectly comfortable des*xing their neonates.

People need to be aware that when a breeder agrees that “it’s perfectly safe to des*x 12 week old kittens”, this is inconsistent with other small animal practice. Current puppy recommendation is to not des*x before 12 months. Also, cats/kittens are rarely included in veterinary studies across the board. Breeders can say early des*xing is safe because there are no studies suggesting otherwise. There is an absence of research. It makes no sense that early spaying is not recommended for puppies but tiny little neonate kittens are perfectly fine to go through major abdominal surgery and anaesthesia.

Kittens need their hormone producing organs during development to reach optimal health. S*x hormones help with bone development and growth. We would NEVER give a hysterectomy to a child but we’re comfortable doing it to our precious pets. It’s not ok.

So today, I left the vets with our kittens intact. From today our pet kittens will leave:

⭐️ With their s*x organs intact.
⭐️ with a Des*xing agreement.
⭐️ With a letter from my vet to give to the new owner’s local Council. (Ours, for example, now want puppies and kittens des*xed by 3 months old 😳 which is NOT in line with best practice. Our vet is writing exemptions flat out).
⭐️ The pedigree certificate will be sent once evidence of des*xing (around 6 months) has been produced.

In all honesty, every kitten who I have previously sent off intact, with a verbal agreement to des*x in a few months time has been followed through. Every. Single. One!!! Maybe we as breeders just need to spend a bit more time weeding out the buyers who would take advantage. And seriously, I don’t think there would be many people who would enjoy living with an intact Bengal once puberty hits. It’s not a walk in the park, that’s for sure. 😆

We are downsizing!

Our beautiful queen Samarinda is retiring (she’s almost 5 years old) and we’re looking for a special home for her to live out her days in comfort. She is a snuggle muffin who is very easy and quiet to have around.

Please send me a message 📧 if you’d like to talk further.

Three beautiful, acrobatic girls. Their spots are also divine. It’s only taken us YEARS of breeding to get coats this nice. 🥰

(Sorry about the dishwasher noise in the background. 😆)

Send me a message if you’re ready for a Bengal of your own. 💜🧡💟

The gorgeous Mario with his new family. He clearly moved in with confidence. 😆 The first photos are within hours. The last photo within days. 😍

“He slept like an Angel. I popped him in bed at about 10pm and he didn’t get up till we all did at 9am 😆.”

“He’s also super smart, I put out a litter tray for him but also showed him where the main litter box was. The main one is a fully enclosed one with a door, so I thought he may not like using it yet. He used the open tray I put out for him once, and then has used the main box the remaining times!”

Go Mario!

Stinky Le Pew (my 8 year olds, marble bengal) and the 4 kittens only met yesterday. There’s been a lot of hissing and fluffed tails on the kittens part and lots of teasing and jumping out of boxes on Stinky’s part. It’s very cute to watch. 🤭

They’ll be exhausted tonight.
