Today we headed to Darwin High School a lil earlier than planned to hang out with the Year 12 students who were heading in to their Psychology exam.

The floofs couldnā€™t have been more welcomed by a group of nervous students who needed a lil break from the pre exam nerves.

Plenty of cuddles were on offer, laughs were had from Scout and his talk back attitude, and Chip made sure he said hey to everyone.

Love these doggos, love the work we do šŸ’œšŸ’™šŸ§”

She might be getting on in age but she still loves to learn and be involved.

Nosework has always been one of Harlowā€™s favourite things, but something Iā€™ve never really invested time in to with her becauseā€¦. Well, no excuse actually, apart from sheer laziness.

Naturally, I teach one dog one thing, and all 3 of them end up learning it as well. So Harlow can thank the annoying lil Chippinator for this.

I love seeing how happy this makes her. She moves with excitement, she springs around, and she knows the aim of the game.

Your dog is never too old to learn, get out there and teach them something.

This šŸ‘‡šŸ¼, this is easy to teach and doesnā€™t take much work from you.

So go on, do something fun with your dog.

āœļø in the comments let me know what activity your dog gets TRULY excited about

Chippie had a great Halloween at the Halloween Mantrailing night.

Little guy didnā€™t even care that I wasnā€™t at the end of the lead with him. Guess it shows how much he loves this sport.

Thanks Kathy and Anna for running the lil guy, and thanks Bron for putting on a great night.

Canā€™t wait to get back out there with him.

Oh what a night the lil Chippie and I had šŸ˜Ž.

Mantrailing with Top End K9 Services

Chip was introduced to firmer ground, longer search areas and some man made objects.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing this guy go to work and find the trail layer.

If youā€™re keen to start Mantrailing, have some fun with your dog, and deliberately get lost so another awesome team can find youā€¦ contact Bron to find out when the next Intro to Mantrailing session will be.

Itā€™s an activity for all ages, all breeds.

EMAIL ISSUE

Our emails arenā€™t working when sent directly from the website. If youā€™ve tried to contact us that way and not heard back I promise Iā€™m not being rude, itā€™s a high chance theyā€™ve not come through.

Iā€™ve got Chip on to it, but heā€™s easily distracted and not being much help.

If thereā€™s any Wordpress gurus out there who can help, please contact me. The issue is there šŸ˜¬

In the mean time please directly email [email protected] or send a DM on Instagram or Facebook.

Horrible, just horrible.

When will it stop?

You bring these animals in to your world, YOU need to do something about it and be a RESPONSIBLE owner.

Owning a big powerful breed is not a trophy for the backyard. These dogs need training, they need fulfilment, they need rules, they need communication, they need commitment, they need owners who will do good by them.

Or soon enough weā€™ll see more and more breeds targeted and banned.

Genetics and environment play a part.

Buy a poorly bred dog off gumtree or from the back of someoneā€™s car, you are probably getting what you paid for.

Buy a well bred dog, with plenty of genetic history and great breeders, you are probably getting what you paid for.

Do your dog justice, train them, fulfil them.

Leaving them in the backyard, or treating them like babies is not cutting it, nor is it being responsible.

Itā€™s not just the big powerful breeds either, it goes for all dogs.

Train them, teach them how you want them to behave, show them guidance, fulfil their needs.

If you donā€™t have the time for that, DONā€™T get a dog.

Theyā€™re not a trophy šŸ†

They are amazing, wonderful creatures with so much love to give and gain from.

Itā€™s up to YOU šŸ«µšŸ¼

It was her birthday last week and today is her GOTCHA DAY!!!

9 years ago I picked up a dog called Missy, renamed her Harlow and had the intention to train her up for a few months and take her down to Melbourne to live with my Mum.

Harlow wasnā€™t always the calm, sweet angel she is today. She was a fence runner, knocked toddlers over, bird chaser and a well loved family member.

Her family realised they didnā€™t have the time to train her with a toddler and brand new baby so contacted me to see if I would like her.

I didnā€™t hesitate šŸ¤—

I had previously done some training with her and can remember very clearly saying to her ā€œif you ever need somewhere to live, you can live with me.ā€

Of course I said that in jest and never thought it would happen.

9 years later and here we are.

Please donā€™t come at those who are rehoming their pets without knowing the full story. Sometimes itā€™s for the best.

Imagine how different Harlowā€™s life would have been had her amazing family kept on to her purely because of the ā€˜a pet is for lifeā€™ idea out there.

Of course thereā€™s some out there who rehome for the sake of it, but the perfect home could be just around the corner.

It takes a lot to rehome your pet, one you love so dearly but know itā€™s in their best interest to go to a new home.

I know, Iā€™ve been on both sides.

Stop and think before you go on your next internet rant attacking a person for rehoming their pet. Sometimes itā€™s for the best šŸ˜‰

Jackson and his handler Sharon headed to both Palmerston Regional Hospital and Royal Darwin Hospital as a trial run today.

What a little superstar this doggo is šŸ’„

Heā€™s only 2, but walked the wards and halls like heā€™s done it before, taking it all in.

Keep an eye out for Jackson at PRH and RDH, youā€™ll be seeing him again soon.

History of Therapy Dogs.

I was asked some fantastic questions by a follower a few weeks ago and I finally went on a deep dive to find out the answers.

ā“How did therapy dogs come about?

ā“Who was the first therapy dog?

Let me know in the comments what you found interesting šŸ‘‡šŸ¼

šŸŒ Iā€™ve added seeing the memorial to Smoky to my bucket list. Guess Iā€™m adding Ohio to the travel list, as well as a stop at the Royal Womenā€™s and Brisbane Hospital in Brisbane next time Iā€™m in QLD.

Final trial weekend for the year and the boys put on a show in some difficult conditions.

A hot evening, with some rain thrown in early just to make the good smells even better, and a huge number of competitors. Thanks Darwin Obedience Dog Club for putting on another great trial!

Scout finished šŸ„‡ with a great score of 98/100. I thought he was sluggish, but we wonā€™t argue with the judge šŸ¤£

Heā€™s got two more to go until he earns his Champion title. A long 7mth wait until our next trial in 2025.

Chip waited patiently all evening for his run, 11:15pm šŸ˜¬. Last dog to compete and he put on a show for everyone. šŸ’Æ/100 for the little guy. Taking after his big bro perhaps. šŸ„‡ for him!!!

Chippie earnt his Rally Novice title with an average score of 97. Not bad for the little lunatic. A lot to work on over the off (wet) season. Plenty of new stations to learn and perfect his heel work. 2025 he competes off lead šŸ˜¬

CERTIFICATION

Itā€™s certainly something that has been popping up throughout the last few weeks.

Originally I did my first course in Melbourne with Ralph, again with Oliver (Iā€™ve never introduced him šŸ¤”), and I also took Harlow down when she was ready. When Scout was old enough I did an advanced handlers course with both Harlow and Scout in Melbourne demonstrating I could handle multiple dogs at the same time.

Back then there werenā€™t many options about, but as the therapy dog world has grown thereā€™s certainly more options out there.

How do you know which course is best?
ā€¢ Research the course being offered. Find out about the training philosophy. Does that fit with you and your dog? Do they offer ongoing support?

Here in the NT there is limited availability and itā€™s something Iā€™ve always considered doing but itā€™s always been put at the bottom of the list.

Should I consider running courses?

Iā€™d love to know your thoughts below.

ā€¢ What would you be looking for when choosing a course?

1:1 sessions, weekend courses, online availability, extra support, list of requirements during the test.

Let me know below

Today I was asked how long it took to train the dogs?

My responseā€¦. ā€œEvery day. Sheā€™s 10 next week and still gets trained.ā€

And if I have Chip, I chuckle and say ā€œheā€™s forever in training.ā€ Which is true for them all šŸ¤—

Training your dog to be a therapy dog isnā€™t just about doing a course/certification, itā€™s a FOREVER commitment.

Many people working with their dog complete a weekend course (some a week long course) and never continue training their dog after.

If thisšŸ‘†šŸ¼is you, youā€™re letting your dog down.

No you donā€™t have to be in to teaching your dog tricks or competitions like I am, but you certainly should be keen to continue developing yours and your dogs skills.

Not only will you learn more about your dog, but youā€™re dog is going to move through many different stages of life.

They will no longer be the bubbly 2 year old dog that you did a course with, theyā€™ll soon be the 8 year old dog that still enjoys kids but doesnā€™t like the fast moving toddlers squealing with excitement.

They were once the confident dog that was unbothered by noises, but something happened and they were spooked, no longer wanting to enter the foyer of that place.

Continued training will help you and your dog be able to work through these problems together.

Donā€™t be that person that lets their dog down, be the person that continually wants their dog to succeed whilst working.

Yes, Harlow still gets trained every day. As much as the boys? No way. Thereā€™s some things that are non negotiable such as manners, but when it comes to learning new things, she just wants a few minutes of fun.

Do you spend time training your dog every day?
