New Blog! Your Cat's Skin During Winter with vet Dr Claire Jenkins

By now we are all cranking up the heat to combat the rain and chilly air - but what is that doing to your cats skin?

As your home is filled with dry warm air, your cat may start to experience dry and irritated skin.

“The combination of low humidity, limited ventilation and constant heating can strip moisture from your cat’s skin,” explains Dr Jenkins. “And unlike humans, they can’t simply moisturise. Subtle changes in behaviour or coat condition are their way of telling us they’re uncomfortable.”

Winter is well and truly here and as we seek the warmth of inside, cuddling under blankets, binging TV shows while we snack, we're not as active as we normally would be.

“It’s completely normal for cats to become less active in winter, but that shift can lead to weight gain and poor muscle tone if it’s not balanced with indoor enrichment or adjustments in diet,” says Dr Jenkins.

“The key is to keep things stimulating. Whether it’s a new window perch, a feeding puzzle, or just short daily play sessions, anything that gets them moving helps protect their overall health.”
