What I Know About Horses Sharing my life experiences and knowledge about horses with the rest of the world. My mother gave it to me when I was about eight years of age. By Bonnie Lewis

And Allah took a handful of southerly wind, blew His breath over it, and created the horse.... ~Bedouin Legend

I first read this quotation in a book called “Naadirah: the Arabian Dream”. I loved that book. I still do and I still have it. It helped feed my childhood dreams and passions which have become a reality and endure today. Since being that little girl who just wanted a horsey, I have accu

mulated a lifetime of experience and knowledge about horses. This has been gained from informal and formal education, international work experience and hands on, ‘having a go’ practical experience. Throughout this life long journey I have had many educators, both human and equine. Without them I would not be the person I am today. I want to somehow repay all of them for the lessons I have been given and the best way I can think of to do that is to share what I have learnt with you. I don’t consider myself an expert – I don’t like to label myself - however I do know a great deal about horses. I am hopeful that by sharing my experiences and knowledge here, you may learn something that will help you to be a better horseperson. By becoming a better horseperson you will enhance the life of all the horses that you encounter in your lifetime. All posts on this page are solely my own thoughts and opinions derived from my own experiences. If you disagree, that is okay as we all have different experiences. If you are able to utilise at least one snippet of knowledge from here, it will be mission accomplished for me. My horse's feet are as swift as rolling thunder, he carries me away from all my fears, And when the world threatens to fall asunder, his mane is there to wipe away my tears.

Lungeing sessions should not last longer than 20 minutes. Here’s why:

• Horses did not evolve to move in circles.
• Lungeing is hard work on the horse’s joints, tendons and muscles.
• Overwork on the lunge (or any situation) can cause pain, injury, discomfort and fatigue.

According to Australian researchers, ‘In an 18-m diameter round-pen, approximately 20 circuits equal 1 km. In just 20 minutes of lunging or round-pen work, a horse may cover around 5 km in distance which, as we postulate, poses musculoskeletal risks due to the constant circular track. Therefore, round-pen/lunging sessions exceeding 20 minutes should be avoided’ (https://tinyurl.com/CuttingTheChase).
