I have a question for or Ashaari family.
Do you know of anyone who could help these two find a furever home?
We have not personally met these two but their current family have sent us a little information about them.

BONDED PAIR

NINA
RR x Cattle, 5yr
Desexed
Nina, having the RR genes, she can be aloof with strangers. However is the most loving, sweetest & loyal girl with her family. An absolute smoother!

Nina’s quite the home pup. She’s dog selective & doesn’t enjoy socialising with other dogs. Dog parks just aren’t her thing, she would much prefer to stay home with her family. Nina is great with older kids. She is a loyal guard dog with strangers but will welcome familiar faces.

Both dogs live surrounded by wildlife, koalas, possums & rescue joeys. There is also a cat in the house. They are kept separate for everyone’s safety so we DO NOT recommend cats or pocket pet etc.

The bond between these two is beautiful & we are aiming to rehome together; as Nina relies on Bill. She is storm phobic & freezes in fear. Nina has to be picked up and placed in the safety of her kennel. Bill stays by her side & is like her therapy dog.

BILL
4.6yrs lab x wolfie. Desexed, vacc
M/chip no….

While Nina is a shy home pup, Bill is a social, lovable, gentle goofball.

Bill looooves everybody, including other dogs. He is a regular at the local dog park and school. Bill has the labby gene & is very good motivated so easy to train. He walks well on a lead & a good beautiful boy.

The family are devastated to be in this situation. They have a great deal happening with a family illness, house sale & relocation. These dogs are much loved family members.

If you can help them out please feel free to contact us and we will pass your details onto the family.

I would like to introduce Choc to our amazing Ashaari Canine Academy family. This beautiful man has working hard to overcome his anxieties, but unfortunately his human siblings are not well and the stress in the household is stalling his recovery. While his amazing mum is doing EVERYTHING in her power to help him along she is stretched thin and needs some help.
Choc is wondering if we have any members of our family who could give him a calmer home to help him with recovery? He will only go to the best fit and will require ongoing help with training and medication.
If you think you, or someone you know, could be the right home for this beautiful man please feel free to contact me for more information.

This is a fantastic graph to help illustrate how many things come under the term "socialization".

This is a fantastic graph to help illustrate how many things come under the term "socialization".

This is a good illustration of puppy socialization needs, shared from Good as Gold Training, but I would also add that all of the listed exposure and experience needs to feel *safe* for the puppy. If s/he is nervous, tentative, or fearful the fear should be handled by backing off a little and reintroducing very slowly and with lots of praise, food and patience. Sometimes, for the sake of "socialization", owners push their puppies too far and too fast, and it can backfire. Good socialization requires that we "read" our puppies and help them feel safe as they navigate the sounds, textures, people and animals in their new world.

This is such an important thing to keep in mind!
It is not just relevant to parrots but all companion animals. Your dog might be friendly in many different situations, but do they want to interact with people today?

'Is s/he friendly?' 🦜

These words may sound familiar to you if you take your parrot out and about, or even if you have visitors regularly. Maybe you've even been guilty of asking this question yourself...

This question is a perfect example of the unrealistic expectations we place on companion animals. We expect them to be better than we are, always friendly like it is an immutable state of being, and if they are not always friendly then they must be unfriendly or even aggressive.

Our animal's temperament isn't subject to whether they want to let strangers touch them (often the reason we are asked 'are they friendly'). Nor is their state of being static...it is dependent on the environment. On any given day we can be many things; happy, sad, angry, kind....behaviour is complex and intertwined, no one behaviour defines who we are, or who our animals are.

A better question would be....'does your bird want to interact with me? ' or 'does she enjoy interacting with strangers'....these allow the birds guardian to answer without either having someone reach out to touch their bird because they said the bird was friendly or the implication that the bird is 'unfriendly' or 'aggressive'. More importantly it recognises our animals as thinking, feeling creatures with their own preferences that do not define their 'friendliness'.

Like us animals enjoy their personal space, they may choose to allow others to physically interact with them but also like us these interactions are usually restricted to those they have a social relationship with, not just anyone. It is time we start recognising and respecting this.

This is why we encourage you to praise your dog like crazy when they get things right!

The wire mother experiment and it’s relation to dog training.

This was an experiment done by Harry Harlow and was a study done to test an animals desire for affection.

In this experiment young monkeys where taken from their birth mothers and placed in a room with two artificial mothers.

One was a wire mother that gave food while the other was a cloth mother that had no food to offer.

The study showed that the baby monkey spent most of its time with the cloth mother except at times where the baby was hungry and looking for food.

This study showed that animals will seek out and desire relationships over food and only seek out food when the need arises.

So why is it that so many dog trainers use food as their sole source of reinforcement while simultaneously neglecting the emotional needs of the dog?

I see it time and time again and find it very sad, trainers and owners using the dogs food as a sole means to change behavior in the animal, oftentimes putting the dog into starvation in order to achieve results.

They are wire mothers…

There’s nothing wrong with incorporating food in training, and if done right it can enhance the relationship, but food should never be used exclusively.

This type of training views the dog as a robot rather than an individual.

If you want to see true behavior change in your dog you need to work on the relationship.

The emotions of the dog comes first.

Be the cloth mother for your dogs.

EDIT: It seems that this post has gotten the attention of quite a few people, many of which are extremely upset at what the post is saying.

If you are that upset about a post that is simply saying you should be building a relationship with your dog rather than using food or pushing a button on an E-collar to change behaviors (one dimensional training) then maybe you are part of the problem.

We are soooo excited to officially share our handout on the Stages of Training. Thank you Doggie Drawings by Lili Chin for bringing this to life! This handout is used for clients to follow their dog's training progress!
It goes through all the stages of learning:
1. Acquisition (get the behavior)
2. Fluency (add the cue)
3. Generalization (proof the behavior)
4. Maintenance (maintain the behavior)

Edit to clarify:
1. This is FREE for you to use/make copies of for clients, but not the edit.
2. “As taught by Jean Donaldson” refers to Push, Stick, Drop

Thanks for all the support! 🐾💙🐾

This is brilliant!
These behaviors are all very normal. We might not find them particularly desirable but that doesn't mean there is something wrong with our dogs for doing them. It is up to us to show provide them with more productive and "acceptable" outlets for these very normal behaviors 😉
