This is an excellent article on treating Hot Spots... an issue many owners face 🐾

They can flash onto the scene nearly as fast as a lightning strike, then take forever to leave - especially if you don't take the right actions to quell them. And if you fail to identify the underlying cause, it'll be like adding insult to injury day in and day out.

This is so true!
I regularly have dogs here that are overweight. If I feel an owner is open to having a chat about their dogs' weight & how to help them loose weight... then I have that chat. Mostly owners are happy & appreciative of my input & I have had some excellent weight-loss wins! 😃🐾

Dogs need to sniff! Smell is their primary sense... like seeing is for humans... imagine if you weren't allowed to 'see' on a walk.
If you don't want to break your rhythm, then walk on the spot.
Let them sniff... the walk is for them not you 🐾

Step 1 - Learn how to monitor weight accurately:

‘Body Condition Scoring.’ The easiest and most reliable way to score is to run your hand lightly along the side of your pet’s chest or rib cage. You should be able to feel the ribs without pushing in.

Step 2 - Start with simple

Many pets will lose weight by simply dropping their current daily food intake by 25%. This sounds quite simple but it is easy to forget about all the little treats! A simple exchange of a couple of ‘dog biscuits’ for a carrot can make a big difference on the treat front too!

Step 3 - Ditch the carbs

Neither cats nor dogs thrive on high carbohydrate diets and their natural physiology is better aligned with a high protein, high fat and low carbohydrate diet. Switching up your pet’s diet can really help to wake up their metabolism and kick start the weight loss journey. Dr Nicole recommends including a good probiotic in a weight loss journey as a diverse microbiome will metabolise nutrients much better than a poor one.

Step 4 - Exercise

Consistent exercise is great, especially for pets that are struggling with their joints, as it helps manage pain control better than big exercise days that are followed by rest days. A key for the success of exercise and weight loss is to try and increase your pace a touch so you can feel your own heart rate elevate a little more than normal (which will mean your pet’s will as well!)

Step 5 - Extra Help

If you’re having trouble shedding the extra kilos, please don’t struggle alone. Many vet clinics have weight loss clinics these days and offer great support. It’s also a good idea to have a consultation with your vet, as sometimes a blood test is required to rule out underlying issues that can affect weight such as an underactive thyroid.

PLEASE.... don't ever give rawhide to dogs!
It is full of chemicals, unregulated & potentially lethal.
There are so many better treat options available.

What’s even worse is how rawhide is created: rawhides are a by-product of the leather industry and are washed and sterilized with a variety of (often harmful) chemicals, such as sodium sulfide, lime, chromium salts, bleach, and hydrogen peroxide. It is then molded and dyed to form what you see in pet stores today.
Please avoid them at all cost, no matter how pretty they market them!
