The Animal Rehoming Service Inc. The Animal Rehoming Service Inc. (TARS) is a Melbourne based registered dog rescue charity. Est. 2000

OUR CHARTER IS:
*To act as a contact and liaison point between people who want to rehome their animals and people who wish to adopt them.
*To facilitate the provision of care and accommodation to genuinely homeless animals, by providing enriching foster homes when available, whilst finding them suitable permanent homes.
*To provide veterinary care for homeless animals, prior to placement in a suit

able permanent home. All animals are desexed prior to rehoming, to curb the exponential growth of unwanted animals in Victoria. When necessary, smaller vet expenses such as desexing and vaccinations are covered by the new owner, but larger vet fees are paid for via fundraising.
*To provide ongoing support and advice to those adopting through our service, as well as training and nutritional help, for the life of their pet.

# Update: I’m still looking for a loving home!
Nova is a 2 year old, desexed, vaccinated, wormed and microchipped 24kg female American Staffordshire Bull Terrier, who’s looking for a loving home.
She’s a typical staffy: goofy and very loving. She’s also a very happy and communicative girl who loves to ‘chat.’ She loves belly rubs and cuddles on the couch, as well as going on her daily walks, family camping trips and other outdoor adventures. She’d thrive in a loving home with an experienced family. An all-adult home or one with older, dog savvy teenagers would suit.
Nova’s great with dogs she knows but requires an experienced owner who can help her with introductions to dogs she doesn’t know. She would suit a home with a compatible desexed male dog for company or being the sole pet of the home. She’s not been tested with cats.
She enjoys an indoor/ outdoor lifestyle, sleeping indoors.
Nova’s adoption fee is $400

Tux is a 2 year old, desexed, vaccinated, wormed and microchipped 25kg male short hair Border Collie who’s looking for a loving home.
He’s a loving and playful boy who would thrive as a much loved member of the family. He’d suit an experienced and active, all-adult family or one with active, dog-savvy teenagers. One to two walks a day is what he needs, plus the occasional game of fetch. Fetch is his favourite thing in the world, albeit after snuggling up to his favourite people 😊
Tux has had basic training and loves to please, so further training wouldn’t be a problem. He’s great with other dogs, going on regular runs with some of the dogs he knows from the local park. We think a home with another active, friendly dog for company would be perfect for him. He’s also lived with cats.
He enjoys an indoor/ outdoor lifestyle, sleeping indoors. Regular brushing would also be required.
Tux’s adoption fee is $450

Millie is a 4 year old, desexed, vaccinated, wormed and microchipped 44kg female American Bulldog (Scott Type) who’s looking for a loving home, as her owner has passed away.
She’s a very affectionate, sensitive and loyal girl who would love to be a cherished member of the family. She’d suit an experienced all-adult family or one with gentle, dog-savvy teenagers.
Millie enjoys her daily walks and walks well on lead. She’s fine with other dogs but will lunge if a dog comes up behind her to sniff her. A home with a desexed male dog would be perfect for her. She’s not been tested with cats.
She has a sensitive stomach, so Millie’s fed a chicken and rice formula dog food and has chicken treats.
Millie had some incontinence issues, but these were resolved with Propalin given twice daily.
She had a cruciate ligament operation in April last year and has a plate and screws in her knee. Since then, she’s only been cautiously let off lead when the park’s quiet, so as not to aggravate her left rear knee.
She enjoys an indoor/ outdoor lifestyle, sleeping indoors.
Millie’s adoption fee is $450

Happy Adoption Tale!
We received this from Liv and Jim who recently adopted Kyra our Labrador x Beagle. 😊
We’d been trying to find her a suitable home since May last year, then it finally happened, much to the relief of Kyra’s original owner and ourselves.
‘We feel incredibly lucky to have welcomed this gorgeous girl into our home — she is cheeky, affectionate and makes us laugh multiple times a day! She loves her morning walks, sniffing out new trees and saying hi to other dogs, before coming home and collapsing onto her bed in the lounge room or home office, where she is patted, cuddled and constantly reminded she is a very good girl! She has adapted well to her new routine and seems more settled and relaxed each day — enjoying her daily walks, exploring her new home, and getting cuddles and tummy rubs in the evening. We adore her! 🐾💞’
Thanks Liv and Jim for giving Kyra such a great home! 🐶😊

Happy (and Sad) Adoption Tale.
We found out recently that lovely Lochie the miniature Schnauzer x who found his forever home through TARS, had sadly passed away. His owner Pauline wanted to tell you his story.
‘Lochie was 5 years old when I adopted him through The Animal Rehoming Service in 2015. He quickly settled into my home and my heart. He was a unique, special and quirky little boy who was much loved by my entire family.
The saying goes that you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but that certainly didn’t apply to Lochie. He was busy learning all the time. He became a devoted, intelligent and very funny member of my family.
Sadly he developed multiple, incurable tumours in his lungs recently. After trying unsuccessfully to stop it, he was eventually put to sleep. We were very lucky to have had him for 9 lovely years.
Lochie is forever in our hearts.
Pauline.’
Our heartfelt condolences to you Pauline.
Thanks for giving him those extra nine well loved years! He was a very lucky boy.

Happy Adoption Tale!
Harley (white patch on nose), our Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (aka Toller) has found a great new home with Lana and her family, which includes their Toller girl Ember.
We recently got this update from Lana.
‘All going well here with Harley. He’s enthusiastically embraced country living! With plenty of room to stretch his long legs and Ember to show him the ropes, he has settled in remarkably well. Not even the intense storms of the past week have bothered him! It must be tough changing families and homes, but we think he's pretty happy and settled now.’
Thanks Lana for giving Harley a loving home and thanks Ember for being such a great big sister! 🐶🐶

A great service for those who have sadly lost a pet, along with the many ‘Lost and Found’ pages, many being local area based.
Please never leave your pets with people you don’t know and trust.
Being left outside shops is dangerous too, even in ‘nice’ areas. These leads are helpful if you have to: https://www.superlockupleads.com.au/?

Ps: We don’t receive products or payments from the companies or services we mention on Facebook and Instagram and we only do so after multiple positive recommendations or a positive personal experience.

Pablo is a 1 year old, desexed, vaccinated, wormed and microchipped 45kg male German Shepherd who’s looking for a loving home.
He’s a loving, playful and active boy who would suit an experienced and active family, happy to exercise him at least once a day. (He’s currently exercised twice a day). Pablo would also suit an all-adult home or one with gentle, dog-savvy teenagers.
Pablo’s great with other dogs, especially large ones, but he’s kept on lead around smaller dogs that he doesn’t know, due to his size and inquisitive nature. Once Pablo knows them though, he’s fine. (He’s had socialisation training and has improved a lot). A home with another friendly, large dog for company would be lovely.
He enjoys an indoor/ outdoor lifestyle, sleeping indoors. Regular brushing would also be required.
Pablo’s adoption fee is $450

07/01/2025

If you’ve lost a dog or cat and it was bred in NSW, QLD or SA, those states operate state based microchip databases as well as national databases (yes, it’s an unnecessarily messy system). So if those dogs carrying state based microchips are sold to people in other states or their owner moves interstate with them, the state based microchips will become redundant, as they’ll scan blank in all other states. (Not good if your pet goes missing).
Please check which database your dog’s microchip is linked to if you’re unsure. You can do so via https://petaddress.com.au/
National microchips (readable in all states and territories) belong to the following microchip databases.

Australasian Animal Registry
Central Animal Records (CAR)
PetSafe
Global Micro
HomeSafeID

You can transfer your dog’s state based microchip onto one of these national databases without having to re-chip your dog. Simply fill out their relevant form. This for example, is the form you’d use with CAR (please note it’s not an ownership transfer form):
https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0263/7824/0099/files/New_Listing_Already_Implanted_Oct_2024_CARMA_8684c0c8-426e-412b-8192-c8b545e0c2da.pdf?v=1729123098).
Your vet will need to scan your dog to ensure the microchip number is correct. (They have a separate section to fill in). That way your contact details will be linked to your dog no matter where you’re living in Australia. 🏡 🐶
# Please also don’t forget to update your contact details if they’re out of date.

Abraham (Abe) is a 4 year old, desexed, vaccinated, wormed and microchipped 31kg male German Shepherd who’s looking for a loving home.
He's a very affectionate, loyal and active boy who loves his daily walks and has a great, fun-loving personality. As you can see, he also enjoys a snooze!
Abe would love to be an integral part of the family in an all-adult home or one with gentle, dog-savvy teenagers. He’s not a fan of loud noises, so a calm home with experienced dog owners would be ideal.
He’s fine with most dogs and would enjoy a home with another dog for company. Otherwise, he’d suit someone who’s newly retired but very active or someone working from home. Abe’s not been tested with cats.
He enjoys an indoor/ outdoor lifestyle, sleeping indoors and has also been crate trained. Regular grooming/ brushing would be required.
