Rescues are overflowing at the moment and there are a lot of working dogs looking for homes so I wanted to share a bit about our beautiful Bibi - Australian Cattle Dog, sadly no longer with us. She came to us at the age of 6 and we loved and cherished her for 3 precious and wonderful years. She was loyal, loving, and so very gentle. We lost her suddenly to hermangiosarcoma (tumor on the spleen) during covid when I had to hand her over to the vet nurse in the car park and we never saw her again.

Cattle dogs often get a bad wrap and having grown up with them and with three of my own in my adult life I’ve never really understood why. They are very protective of home and family - which makes a lot of people who don't the breed scared of them. I must say that as a female living alone for many years, and as a keen (often lone) trail runner, I have very much appreciated the protective nature of my heelers who have always made me feel - and kept me - safe. And, have never bitten anyone!

They do need and love a good long run every day but most importantly a cattle dog, like most dogs, want to be with their human - all the time if possible. No dog should be home alone all day every day anyway. Alone and bored, behavioural problems can develop for sure.

I’ve never raised an ACD from a puppy having always taken on adults that needed homes, but puppy to 2 YOA requires some dedication to learn to understand each other, communicate, and work well together. They also can be nippy - the ankles of small children running, lawn mower wheels… - it’s inherent in the breed (for nipping cattle) and something to be v aware of if you have children and you’re thinking of getting one. Treat them right and you’ll have one of the greatest mates you’ll ever know. Big fan of the ACD here! Love and miss you forever Bibi-Lee - you were one in a million.

This K9 carrier bike trailer served us so well for a couple of years, especially as little Charlie got older, and could easily fit both Charlie and Bibi (cattle dog) with plenty of room. Teddy and Marnee aren’t so keen on it though, so we’re looking to let it go free to a good home. It can be hard to let go of the way others perceive us. Hard to brush off an unkind comment.

So much of our anxiety around our dog’s behaviour comes from the judgments of others and what society expects from us.

Letting go is easier said than done. But you show up every day for your dog, make a difference to their life. And set an example to those watching. Even if they aren’t ready to see it yet.

Dingo families: A lifelong lesson in teamwork.

For nearly a decade, I’ve had the privilege of filming and studying dingoes in Australia. One thing is clear - dingoes share a strong bond, similar to wolves.

What is becoming clear is that dingoes share a lot of behavioural similarities to wolves. This clip shows young dingoes following an adult on a hunting foray. We know that young wolves learn by watching and eventually participating in what the mature individuals do. We know now that dingoes do this too. This has become clear during many hours filming and observing dingoes for television productions.

Many hours spent filming for wildlife documentaries has revealed fascinating insights into dingo behaviour, which even led to a published research paper with colleagues from Monash University. We documented previously unknown hunting techniques used by these amazing predators in the journal Wildlife Research.

In the same week that Australia has finally secured a date and promised legislation to end the live export of sheep, there’s incredible news from the UK with the long-awaited legislation to end all live exports passed overnight.

“We have some of the highest animal welfare standards in the world. This Bill makes use of post-Brexit freedoms to strengthen these standards by preventing the export of live animals for slaughter and fattening, which we know causes animals unnecessary stress and injury” - Steve Barclay, Environment Secretary.

“After fifty years of campaigning to end live exports, it is so important, and welcome, that the UK Government is acting to ban the live export of animals - outlawing the long, crowded journeys, mental exhaustion, physical injury, dehydration and stress that are a reality for farm animals on these unnecessary journeys” - Kerry Postlethwaite, RSPCA England and Wales.

Belle is looking for a new home and was recently listed with us by her breeder Kim. Belle is a very loved and cared for family pet but unfortunately, due to family health issues she's now back with Kim. As is typical of our breeders, Kim is committed to ensuring the health and wellbeing of her puppies and dogs for life, so she's on a mission to find the best new home for this beautiful girl.

She is nearly three years old.

A HUTCH IS NOT ENOUGH – BUNNIES NEED SPACE TO RUN AND PLAY! 🐰💗🏠

Bunnies are social animals that need plenty of space to exercise, so the hutches and cages that are typically marketed to bunny-lovers are not just inadequate for their needs, they even fall well short of the welfare standards mandated for rabbits kept in laboratories!

Rabbits need a MINIMUM of 2.5 square metres of floor space at all times – even overnight – and the best way to achieve this (if you’re not able to free roam your bunny inside) is to get yourself a pet pen with eight 80cm-wide panels.

Set it up with a rug underneath to ensure bunny’s feet don’t get sore, a tunnel to play in, a hidey house, hay rack, litter tray, and water and food bowls, and you’ve got one seriously spacious and kind bunny home on your hands!

Introducing Rakus, a male orangutan in his mid-30s, first spotted in Suaq Balimbing in 2009. In a recent discovery, researchers observed Rakus using plant sap and crushed leaves to treat an open wound on his fl**ge, a behavior never seen before in wild orangutans. This fascinating behavior was detailed in a study published on May 2 in Scientific Reports, drawing attention to the intelligence and resourcefulness of these amazing creatures.
