Pet of the month for January 2025 goes to this beautiful girl Daisy.

Daisy came in for a routine dental scale and polish during our dental special. While daisy was under anaesthesia, we noticed excessive bleeding along her gumline after routine teeth scaling. This was abnormal so we reached out to the owner and took some bloods to be analysed by the lab. Dr Raj had ordered a full blood profile with an additional coagulation profile for Daisy.
Her blood test results were consistent with an extremely low platelet count. Platelets are small, disc shaped cell fragments in the blood that help stop bleeding by forming clots. Daisy’s platelet count was 4 (the normal range in a healthy patient is usually 200-900). Daisy was presented the following day with multiple bruising over her body.
Her blood test results and the clinical presentation both suggests that she is most likely diagnosed with IMTP (Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia). IMTP is the condition that affects the immune system, causing it to destroy healthy platelets. Other clinical signs that may be observed are:
- Bleeding from the nose and/or mouth (epistaxis or haemoptysis)
- Blood in stools and/or black tarry stools (hematochezia)
- Blood in vomit (hematemesis)
- Blood in urine (haematuria)
The treatment for this condition is to start the affected patients on oral medications that help to dampen down the immune system, hence reversing the unwanted destruction of healthy platelets. The medications used are typically corticosteroids, and these patients are required to come back for regular blood tests to monitor their platelet levels. Daisy is currently on the mend but responding really well to treatment.
We would like to say a massive thanks to Courtney and Raelene for taking care of Daisy!

PET OF THE MONTH - DECEMBER 2024

Pet of the month for December goes to this gorgeous girl Zelda!

Zelda came into the clinic to have a lump that was located on her neck looked at, due to the location of where the lump was, we recommended removing the lump as soon as possible and to get the lump sent off to the laboratory for testing.

Zelda came in for her surgery and while removing the lump the vet noticed that there was actually a grass seed that had penetrated into the skin and had caused the lump. We removed the grass seed and flushed the wound.

Grass seeds are commonly found in a dog’s paws, ears and eyes. However, they can also be found in an animal’s mouth and genitals, or be inhaled or ingested. This can become very dangerous as these grass seeds can migrate all around the body and they are very small and can be difficult to find. The shape of grass seeds with their sharp tip means that they can very easily penetrate through your dog’s skin or lodge themselves in your pet’s ears or eyes. Most seeds have an awn that fans out and makes it almost impossible for the grass seed to go backwards. Grass seeds carry infection through the skin and into the body, and will generally cause a painful swelling which progresses to cause an abscess in your dog.

During grass seed seasons we would like you to keep in mind and watch out for:

- Keep your grass and weeds under control at home with regular maintenance
- Avoid long grass when on walks
- Keep long haired dogs groomed, especially around their feet and ears
- Inspect your dog all over after each walk, making sure you check in between and under all toes and underneath the ears.

We would like to say a big thank you to her owner for taking good care of her.

PET OF THE MONTH- NOVEMBER 2024

Pet of the month for November goes to this little lady, Lucy!

Lucy came to visit the clinic back in September because her mum noticed that she had a lump growing on the end of her tail. The lump was only small previously, but recently it started to grow significantly. Unfortunately, due to the size and location of the lump, her tail required amputation. This is the only way to make sure that the whole lump would be removed- as there was not enough skin to close the wound and we have to be sure that it was all removed.

Lucy was the perfect patient during her stay at the clinic & has recovered very well with her cute stumpy tail.

If you notice a lump growing on your furry friend, like Lucy’s mum- always have it checked by a vet. The location and size of a lump can depend hugely as to whether it can be removed or not- so it’s always best to have a vet opinion as soon as you notice it to be safe.

We would love that thank Lucy’s mum for being a great pet parent!
