Pet of the month for January 2025 goes to this beautiful girl Daisy.
Daisy came in for a routine dental scale and polish during our dental special. While daisy was under anaesthesia, we noticed excessive bleeding along her gumline after routine teeth scaling. This was abnormal so we reached out to the owner and took some bloods to be analysed by the lab. Dr Raj had ordered a full blood profile with an additional coagulation profile for Daisy.
Her blood test results were consistent with an extremely low platelet count. Platelets are small, disc shaped cell fragments in the blood that help stop bleeding by forming clots. Daisy’s platelet count was 4 (the normal range in a healthy patient is usually 200-900). Daisy was presented the following day with multiple bruising over her body.
Her blood test results and the clinical presentation both suggests that she is most likely diagnosed with IMTP (Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia). IMTP is the condition that affects the immune system, causing it to destroy healthy platelets. Other clinical signs that may be observed are:
- Bleeding from the nose and/or mouth (epistaxis or haemoptysis)
- Blood in stools and/or black tarry stools (hematochezia)
- Blood in vomit (hematemesis)
- Blood in urine (haematuria)
The treatment for this condition is to start the affected patients on oral medications that help to dampen down the immune system, hence reversing the unwanted destruction of healthy platelets. The medications used are typically corticosteroids, and these patients are required to come back for regular blood tests to monitor their platelet levels. Daisy is currently on the mend but responding really well to treatment.
We would like to say a massive thanks to Courtney and Raelene for taking care of Daisy!
