🥵 HEAT STROKE 🥵

With the weather warming up- we want to send out a kind reminder to be mindful of our furry friends.

1. Walking during the day is NOT recommended, dawn/dusk are the best times. If you would not walk outside wearing a fur jacket & no shoes- why should they⁉

2. Avoid leaving them outside during the extremely hot days, their body temp can rise very fast. If you absolutely cannot avoid this- please make sure plenty of shade & multiple water bowls are available (preferally not metal, as these can burn them)

3. DO NOT LEAVE DOGS IN CARS- FOR ANY AMOUNT OF TIME. If you are not in the car with them, then there is no need for them to be in it either. 🚘❌

SIGNS OF HEAT STROKE:
Early signs include excessive panting, drooling, and bright red gums. As it progresses, a dog may show lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, wobbliness, seizures, and collapse.

Pet of the month for December goes to Andre!!

This lovely boy has been a regular patient of ours as he has a disease called Cushings, a medical condition caused by an excess of the hormone cortisol, leading to symptoms like weight gain, a rounded face, and fragile skin.

Back in October, Andre came to visit us because he was not feeling the best. He wasn’t wanting to eat or drink and seemed to be in discomfort while moving around. On physical examination it was noted that he was very sore/tense in the abdominal area- so bloods and ultrasound was recommended. His bloods didn’t show any major changes; however, his ultrasound showed some inflammation of his colonic wall and a small nodular mass on his spleen. It was recommended that he has a repeat scan to make sure the splenic mass hasn’t changed in shape/size.

Andre came back at the end of last month for his repeat scan, which showed the good news that it hadn’t change at all. However, over time it can change and become life threatening if it was to rupture. He would essentially be bleeding out into his abdominal cavity. The option was given to his mum, to remove his spleen before this happens.

His splenectomy was performed last week and the surgery went exactly how we had hoped. He recovered very well and so far, has been doing great at home.
We would love to thank his mum for being the best pet parent, he is one lucky boy

Pet of the month for November goes to this sweet girl, Pharrah!

Pharrah came to visit the clinic at the end of September for her left eye, the day previous she had been running around in the bushes and since then it had been bothering her. Dr Raj performed an eye exam, which included adding some eye drops into her eye that creates staining- this then shows us if an ulcer on her corneal is present. Unfortunately for Pharrah, the staining showed that almost half her cornea was ulcerated. She was sent home with some special eye drops that were need to be given every 4 hours & booked in for a revisit a few days later.

At her revisit her owner noted that she doesn’t seem too bothered by it anymore, however the staining showed that the ulcer had hardly reduced in size. Her owner was offered 2 options from here, create a new eyedrop using Pharrah’s own blood- or put her under sedation and complete the diamond burr procedure (a procedure done to remove damaged, loose, or non-adherent epithelial tissue from the cornea, most commonly to treat non-healing corneal ulcers. The process involves putting her under a light sedation and numbing the eye with local anaesthetic drops, using a motorized diamond-dusted burr to gently polish and smooth the corneal surface to promote proper healing).

It was decided to trial the new eye drops first, so Dr Hali took some of her blood and the next day the they were created by taking the serum out of the tube after it had settled overnight. During the first 3 weeks of October, she was brought in for weekly revisit to monitor the ulcer- however during this time it had only reduced by 20%. The diamond burr procedure was going to be the best option for Pharrah at this stage- so she was scheduled in.

It’s been 2 weeks since the procedure and it was a success. She is still having her daily eye drops, but her last 2 revisits have shown no ulcer present!
We would love to thank her mum for keeping up her revisit & doing everything Pharrah needed to get her eye back to normal

HAPPY VET NURSES DAY!!
Today is Vet Nurse's day. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our amazing vet nurses Nial, Courtney, Jodie, Gabby and all our work experience nurses who always go the extra mile to help every animal & their families. The clinic wouldn't run as smoothly as it does without them.
This post also goes out to all the amazing vet nurses out there!

Pet of the month for October goes to this little man, Winston!

Winston originally came to visit us back in August as his family noticed that he was passing blood in his urine, he was not however straining to pass the urine. Dr Raj recommended sending off a urine sample to find out the cause- unfortunately we were not able to collect any in clinic, so his family was tasked to collect some at home.

Thankfully, they were able to collect it the next day- so off it was sent to the laboratory for testing. His urine results came back the following day and unfortunately occasional calcium oxalate crystals were noted. Calcium oxalate crystals form when calcium and oxalate combine in the urine, often leading to kidney and bladder stones, the most common type of stone.

For Winston, this means he would need to go under general anaesthetic and have a Cystotomy, a surgical procedure to create an incision in the wall of the urinary bladder. It is commonly performed in veterinary medicine to remove bladder stones.

Winston was very brave and his procedure went just as we had hoped. 3 stones were removed in total. He recovered well and you wouldn’t even know he had the invasive procedure completed.
Going forward, he will need to be on a special urinary diet to prevent further stones from forming. As well as routine urine testing to make sure no further stones are present.

We would love to thank his mum and dad for doing the very best for him- he is one lucky boy
