PET OF THE MONTH- NOVEMBER 2024

Pet of the month for November goes to this little lady, Lucy!

Lucy came to visit the clinic back in September because her mum noticed that she had a lump growing on the end of her tail. The lump was only small previously, but recently it started to grow significantly. Unfortunately, due to the size and location of the lump, her tail required amputation. This is the only way to make sure that the whole lump would be removed- as there was not enough skin to close the wound and we have to be sure that it was all removed.

Lucy was the perfect patient during her stay at the clinic & has recovered very well with her cute stumpy tail.

If you notice a lump growing on your furry friend, like Lucy’s mum- always have it checked by a vet. The location and size of a lump can depend hugely as to whether it can be removed or not- so it’s always best to have a vet opinion as soon as you notice it to be safe.

We would love that thank Lucy’s mum for being a great pet parent!

PET OF THE MONTH- OCTOBER!

Pet of the month for October goes to this beauty, Storm.

Storm has been visiting us for years now as she suffers from ongoing ear infections. Even though she is on daily medications for ears, they still become inflamed during the spring/summer months like a lot of our furry friends.

Recently this poor old lady had to come visit us because she was shaking her head so much from an inner ear infection, that she caused herself an Aural Haematoma. An aural haematoma is a collection of blood or serum, within the pinna (ear flap). The swelling may involve the entire ear flap or it may involve only a small area. Over time, if untreated this can cause the ear flap to become thickened.

Treatment for an aural haematoma requires going under a general anaesthetic, making an incision to drain the blood/serum from the ear and then using many sutures to secure the ear flap back together again. These sutures are left in for 3 weeks to make sure that it has healed together completely and we place some antibiotic ointment into the ear to make sure the infection is treated.

Storm was an absolute trooper during her procedure, she is half way through her recovery and is doing extremely well. She will continue to stay on her medications to maintain her ear health ongoing.

Making sure our pet’s skin is maintained is extremely important, skin/ear infections can be very painful and irritating for our furry family members. Spring and Summer are the times of year that our allergies tend to flare up the most. There are many safe medications/shampoos that can help keep our family members comfortable- if you have any concerns about your pet, book in to see us now!

Pets of the month for September goes to not one but these two beautiful boys.

These guys came into the clinic about 2 weeks apart for neutering, also commonly known as castration where both testicles are removed to sterilize (make infertile) a male dog. Castrated dogs are unable to reproduce.

Unfortunately for these two when they came in for their desexing it was noted that Woody has no testicles that had descended and Oscar only had 1 testicle that had descended. During this time, they were checked over by Dr Raj and Dr Hali to see if they could confirm if the testicle is retained in the abdomen or in the inguinal canal (the passage through the abdominal wall into the ge***al region through which a testicle normally descends).

Undescended testicles are commonly called Cryptorchidism which means the failure of one or both testicles to drop into the scrotal sac in male dogs. The testicle can be retained in the abdomen or anywhere along the path to the sc***um pouch (inguinal area). Where the testicle is lodged depends entirely on its size at the time of descent. Abdominal ultrasound is used to detect where the testicle would be if it is within the abdomen.

Desexing is important in dogs as it helps reduce:
- The risk of testicular cancer, the second most common cancer in intact (unneutered) dogs. The risk of cancer is increased in cryptorchid dogs.
- Undesired behaviors such as mounting, marking and aggression
- The likelihood of roaming, which may result in motor vehicle accidents or other injuries

We would like to give a big thank you to Woody and Oscars owners for taking such good care of them.

PET OF THE MONTH - AUGUST 2024

Pet of the month for August goes to a gorgeous boy Oscar.

Oscar was seen at Atwell vet after an altercation with another dog on a walk with his owners. Oscar came down to the clinic that afternoon for a check with the vet as his owners just wanted to get him checked as he had some nasty open wounds. His injury was significant and needed to be flushed and sutured. He was sent home with some pain relief and antibiotics to get him through the night as he was booked in for surgery the next day.

Dog bites can cause significant injury to the skin and soft tissues. The dog's teeth and jaws are very powerful and the wounds they inflict can crush or tear muscles and skin, pe*****te through the chest wall and may even cause a collapsed lung or cause serious or fatal damage to intestinal organs. Even a bite that does not break the skin can cause crushing or bruising injuries to the underlying soft tissues.

Since the dog's mouth is full of bacteria, any bite that does puncture the skin may introduce bacteria or other infectious organisms below the skin surface, where it can multiply and spread. All bite wounds are considered to be contaminated and/or infected. If left untreated, the bacteria in a bite wound may progress to form localized abscess(es) and/or generalized cellulitis (a tissue infection).

His surgery went smoothly and Oscar was on the mend. When he came back after 14 days for his post op check Dr Raj noticed that his wound wasn't fully healed and that his body was trying hard to fight an infection despite the antibiotics. Unfortunately,
Oscar had to go back under general anaesthetic to get the wound re flushed and sutured. The surgery went well and he was sent home that afternoon.

We are very happy to say that Oscar is all healed and he is back to his normal self. We would like to say a massive thank you for his owners for taking such good care of Oscar.

PET OF THE MONTH - JULY 2024

Pet of the month for July goes to this beautiful boy Ralph.

Ralph is a 10 year old boy who has multiple health issues. Firstly he has liver disease, for which is being managed by having daily tablets that help support his liver. Secondly, he had to have his gall bladder removed and lastly & the biggest issue for him being his arthritis.

He unfortunately had to have both his cruciate ligaments in his back legs repaired which have cause his arthritis to start a lot quicker than normal. Due to this he has been getting injections called Zydax (also known as Cartrophen). He has been on these injections for well over a year now & has also recently over the past few months started another injection which is called Beransa.

What these injections do:

Beransa – Is a monthly injection that alleviates pain for the full month, it targets and neutralises a protein that stimulates pain in patients with arthritis.

Zydax – Is a course of 4 injections 1 every week for 4 weeks and repeated every 3 months. This injection helps stimulate cartilage producing cells to help produce healthy cartilage in the joints, it slows down the cartilage damage by the destructive enzymes, helps stimulate joint capsule cells to produce lubricating joint fluid and more.

Due to the colder months, he has been a lot stiffer in the mornings yet these injections have been reducing the amount of pain and discomfort he is having. With Ralphs Liver condition he cannot be given regular anti-inflammatories as they have damaging effects on the body, therefore he comes in for routine bloods to check the liver and kidney enzymes to make sure the medications he is on are helping him and not doing the opposite.

We would like to say a massive thanks to Ralphs family for taking the best care of Ralph!
