🎆 New Year’s Eve Pet Safety Tips! 🎆

As we get ready to welcome the New Year, don’t forget our furry friends may not find the celebrations as fun as we do. Loud fireworks and parties can be stressful for pets, but there are ways to help them feel safe and calm:

🐾 Keep them indoors: Create a quiet, comfortable space where they feel safe.
🐾 Drown out the noise: Play soothing music or keep the TV on to mask the sound of fireworks.
🐾 Secure your yard: If they need to go outside, ensure gates are closed to prevent escapes.
🐾 Comfort them: Stay close, or provide their favorite toy or blanket to help them feel secure.
🐾 Consider calming options: If your pet struggles with anxiety, there are treatments available to help.

💡 We’re here to help! Our clinic is open today, so if you’re concerned about your pet’s comfort or need advice, give us a call or book online. Let’s make this New Year’s Eve a safe and happy one for everyone—including your pets!

Dr. Sam and Team Celestial Have Done It Again! 🏆

We’re absolutely thrilled to share that Celestial V70, skippered by our very own Dr. Sam Haynes, has had an incredible run in this year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race! Backed by Sydney Bulldog Clinic, part of the Sydney Animal Hospitals family, the team tackled the 625-mile course with skill, determination, and a whole lot of heart.

This year wasn’t just about the race—it was about raising awareness for Assistance Dogs Australia, a charity that does life-changing work. We’re so proud to support them and help spread the word about their amazing efforts.

A massive congratulations to Dr. Sam and the Celestial V70 crew—your hard work and passion inspire us every day. Just like on the water, at Sydney Animal Hospitals, we’re all about teamwork, dedication, and going the extra mile.

🌞 HEAT WARNING: Protect Your Pets! 🐾
As Sydney sizzles, especially in the west, it’s vital to keep our furry friends safe in the heat. 🚨

Brachycephalic breeds (like bulldogs, pugs, and Frenchies) are particularly at risk. Their short noses make it harder for them to cool down, so they need extra care in hot weather.

Watch for these warning signs of heat stress:
👉 Panting excessively
👉 Moving sluggishly
👉 Excess salivation or drooling
👉 Reluctance to move
👉 Acting woozy
👉 Vomiting
👉 Losing consciousness

If you notice any of these symptoms, contact us immediately.

Keep your pets cool, hydrated, and indoors as much as possible. Let’s keep them safe this summer! 🐕❤️

To help us keep your pets protected and ensure our records are up to date, we kindly ask you to take a moment to follow the link and complete the questionnaire https://ow.ly/Vl0650UtUtY.

Beware of Grass Seeds – A Hidden Danger for Dogs!

This is Polare. She came in to Newport today for the removal of multiple grass seeds. 🌱🐾

Grass seeds might seem harmless, but they can cause big problems for your furry friend. These tiny seeds can embed themselves in your dog's paws, ears, eyes, or skin, leading to pain, infections, and even abscesses.

Signs to watch for:
- Limping or licking paws excessively.
- Head shaking or ear scratching.
- Red, swollen areas, or discharge around the eyes, nose, or skin.

How to prevent grass seed injuries:
- Check your dog’s paws, ears, and fur after walks, especially in grassy areas.
- Keep long fur around the paws, ears, and belly trimmed.
- Avoid areas with long grass when possible.

If your pet shows any of these signs, don't delay – grass seeds can burrow deeper and cause serious complications.

📍 Polare is feeling better now after her visit to our Newport clinic – if you’re worried about grass seeds, call us straight away!

🐾 Meet Cookie – A Brave Bichon Frise 🐾
Cookie, a dearly loved bichon frise dog which recently presented to our practice with a swollen abdomen and panting. We conducted blood tests which identified increased liver enzymes and subsequently Cookie underwent a contrast CT scan.
📋 The CT scan revealed a very large inoperable liver tumour .Until very recently traditional surgery would have been unable to help her. However a new advanced treatment had become available for pets with inoperable liver tumours involving a procedure called chemo-embolisation.
This procedure involves passing a guided catheter into the blood vessel in the leg, ascending the aorta and identifying the blood supply to the tumour using fluoroscopy. Once identified, the tumour is then destroyed by targeted intra arterial injection of chemotherapy and embolic agents. The scan here demonstrates the spectacular effect with the large tumour being directly targeted by the chemotherapy.
💖 Cookie is making a great recovery from the procedure and we are all very happy to have been able to help her without resorting to risky surgery.

🎉 Lump Amnesty Success! 🎉

Our Lump Amnesty Campaign has come to an end, and we’re thrilled to announce we raised an incredible $20,388 for assistancedogsaustralia. This campaign not only supported a life-changing cause but also saved countless pets by detecting and removing cancerous lumps early. We’re so proud of what we’ve achieved together!

To celebrate this success, we were joined by Assistance Dogs Australia today at the cruising_yacht_club_australia for the official launch of the Celestial V70. Skippered by Dr. Sam Haynes, the Celestial V70 will be competing in the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race this year.

We’re honored to partner with Assistance Dogs Australia and use the Celestial V70 campaign to raise awareness for the incredible work they do—providing highly trained assistance dogs to Australians living with disabilities.

A huge thank you to everyone who supported the campaign. Together, we’re making a difference for people, pets, and communities!

🚨 PARALYSIS TICK WARNING🚨

This tick season is the worst we’ve seen in many years, with cases skyrocketing over the last few weeks.

✅ Tick Prevention is Vital:
Make sure your pets are up to date with their tick prevention. For dogs, there is now a yearly injection that provides the best protection available! There are also oral and spot-on options for dogs and cats.

🧐 Daily Tick Checks:
Inspect your pets daily, especially if they’ve been near the coast or bushland.

🚨 Signs of Tick Paralysis to Watch For:
- Weakness
- Collapse
- Vomiting or retching
- Change in bark or meow
- Difficulty breathing

Tick paralysis can be life-threatening, so don’t delay—protect your pets and contact us immediately if you are concerned.

📞 Call us or visit www.sydneyanimalhospitals.com.au to learn more about the yearly injection and other tick prevention options.
