Teaching your dog to use a Kong is time well spent!
Start slowly, make it easy for them to succeed, and challenge them once they are pros!
Bellatrix is enjoying this frozen Kong while I was busy getting ready to go out to work.
You can use Kongs to occupy your dog while you work, while you're on a Zoom call, while tradies are coming in and out or if you can't manage to exercise your dog for that particular day.
Focusing on skills like Kong use is a proactive step to creating good behaviour from your dog 🐕

Searchin' is the BEST
Searching is in BT's top 3 favourite activities (can you guess the other 2?)
We play this kind of game every day. I hide something, she finds it. It makes her feel good and gives her a big dopamine hit.
What I like about this video is her ability to listen to instructions (I cued her to lie down) before I released her for the search. She also held her sit position. I can understand how hard this is for her, as she just wants to get started as quickly as possible!
What is your dog's superpower? Is it an active superpower like BT's, or a passive one like being little spoon on the couch or bed? Both are valid superpowers!

What to do with a puppy after a game of tug
Playing with your puppy every day is essential! It strengthens your bond with each other, it's fun for both of you and it helps to teach them how to regulate their emotions.
When you play tug with your puppy, make sure that you help them wind down afterwards! Place some food rewards nearby, get them eating and then wait for some calm behaviour such as a sit or drop. I call this process 'tug aftercare.'
If you just go on with your day after a game with your puppy, they will not know what to do with their excitement, and they will probably get up to mischief.
Remember: sensible time, then party time, then sensible time again is the winning formula.

Puppy training - phasing out food as a lure
Using food in training makes for speedy results! However, if you cannot phase out lures, your success will stagnate.
In this video, I demonstrate how to phase out a lure for the drop behaviour. Ideally, you do this within a few sessions of starting the drop so that the behaviour is not dependent on food being present in your hand when you cue it.
These are the sorts of human skills I will focus on in my online puppy training course.

I have been working on building an online puppy training course. When launched, this course will be a must for those wanting to really invest in their puppy's education 🌟🌟🌟
I'm very excited for this course to be launched! I've condensed 25 years of dog training experience into this course for people to access from one source.
Watch this space for exciting updates ✨️💓😎🐾

60 seconds of a special Lady chewing a delicious piece of roo hide for your enjoyment ❤️
Does anyone else find this sound soothing?
Luther the #vizsla was feeling a bit unsure during our sesison together.
This is common for young dogs when they go to new places.
You'll see how I supported him during this time. Dogs feeling safe is of utmost importance!
You will be happy to know the next time we visited this venue, he sniffed and was much more relaxed. Great success 🌟

When interacting with a dog, particularly if you are touching them, every now and then stop and see their reaction.
Puddles the Corgi asked for me to restart numnum (tummy) scratches when I stopped.
This makes dogs feel really good, because you are always open to their communication and their choices.

Bellatrix the German Shepherd demonstrating how to stay in the game
Bellatrix is a detection dog. I try to give her as many ways to practice this skill set as possible. I try to provide a multifaceted approach to her training.
She will detect every morsel of food in the grass in this video, and not stop until she completes the task.
She will hunt for her hidden toy until she finds it. We do this just about every day and I have to be VERY creative to challenge her now.
I believe this has made her a more proficient detection dog ♥
Are birds a distraction for your dog?
Bessie the Bordoodle demonstrates how to be cool around seagulls. The seagulls were not cool, they were demanding hotdogs 😁
You can train your dog to ignore distractions! You just have to reward them for NOT indulging their chase instinct. You can help by keeping them on lead around their distraction while they are learning 🌟
What distractions challenge your dog the most? BT's are kangaroos!
#ThrowbackThursday
Bellatrix, doing what she loves, searching 🐾🌟🐾🌟🐾🌟🐾🌟
You can trach your dog to find stuff! Hide their fave toy or some food, and go with them exclaiming 'Oh my goodness, where is it?' Praise them when they find their treasure and fuss over them. Repeat, making the search a bit more challenging each time or so. That's really it!
Can your dog find hidden treasure?
Can your dog catch food?
This is how I teach them to catch food!
As a side note: did you notice how long Bess stayed orientated toward me and engaged with me during this 'silly game?'
You can use this, and many more games, to build focus on you! If your dog is focused on you, they won't be reacting to people, dogs, scooters OR running off to say hi to people and dogs.
Build the muscle of connection. Start small and build on success. You'll see Bess turn her head away a few times during this video, it's ok, she's still learning!
Well done Bess, this was the most she's been able to be engaged with me in one go, under that level of distraction for some time! 🌟
Stand by mode, the start of walking on a loose lead
I call this stand-by mode. I think it's important for a dog and person to be able to stand still together, to still be connected, but to be still!
The one holding the lead has the responsibility to anchor the lead, stand comfortably and safely and give the dog feedback.
I remember my Beagles, Bender and Bert, would sigh and roll their eyes if we were walking and they were on lead and I stopped to talk to someone. They knew that meant standing still and they would both often lie down like 'We're gonna be here for a while, may as well get comfortable.'
I taught this exercise to Bellatrix so that I can scan for potential triggers so that she doesn't have to.
This foundation skill is so important for all dogs! No, it doesn't need a verbal cue, your body language is enough to signal stand-by mode.
If your dogs struggles with this, I bet their lead walking is unpleasant for you both. Start with this and repeat as often as needed on the walk when you lose connection with them.
Enjoy 🐶
Chief is helping me make some videos for social media. Chief was so awesome today that his 'before' video looks like an 'after' video ✨️✨️
I'll be rolling out some videos over the next few weeks here and on my YouTube channel youtube.com/@georgiadeniet
Chief is a 2 year old German Shepherd. His current home is his second home, and he's still settling in (though he's very much at home now). Like any 2 year old dog, Chief has some big feelings about stuff.
Thanks to Chief and his people for allowing me to work with him for these videos 🐾🌈🐕💙
Ms Bellatrix has a psoas injury 😒 This is common for canine athletes, which she most definitely is.
So, 4 weeks of on lead only (yuck) and only 2 x 30 minute walks per day (also yuck). Plus her rehab exercises of course.
So, our walks are less focused on speed and intense play, and more on delicately eating mulberries from the tree 🌳 I've also increased her enrichment and sniffy activities. I've had to reduce her food intake as she's doing less exercise, but I've added more veg so she doesn't feel too hard done by.
I love that BT adapts easily after she realises there is a new routine 🌟
I also love that she uses her jaw and teeth that can crush bone to daintily pick mulberries 🍇
My friend Lilou and I worked on recalls and connection during our outing to the river 🌈🐾🐕
Lilou is a sweet young dog! I focus on activities that will help to grow her confidence and encourage her to experiment with new behaviours.
She has only just started having off lead time and only at certain places. She did such a good job on our outing, and I even called her away from chasing a seagull! Yes! I have built value for coming to me over the months and months that we have been working together ❤️
Anyhow, this is how I transition young dogs from walking on a long lead to being off lead. Notice that I do not call her with my voice, I use my body movement to communicate that I'd like her to be near me.
I hope that you find a helpful snippet here, or that you enjoy watching Lilou 🌈
Some musings from our morning walk 🐾
Getting your dog past a distraction (dog, cat, person, kid on skateboard) safely and calmly. It can be done.
*I could have avoided this area BUT there's a dog on the other side of the road who barks at BT. So, I chose cats over a barking dog today. If BT was having a tough week, I would avoid this area completely.
Luther demonstrates that all dogs are detection dogs 🐕 🌟💙
Hiding your dog's toys for them to find is such an excellent, fun game to play!
Make it easy for them to succeed at first, and increase difficulty as they get better at the game.
