Good reminder to keep an eye on your pups and keep human Xmas treats away from them- chocolate, grapes, sultanas and some stone fruits are highly toxic to dogs. And no cooked bones!

David Croaker urges people to keep an eye on their four-legged friends this festive season after nearly losing his dogs to a Christmas pudding, and emergency vets say it's timely advice given treatment options will be limited in coming weeks.

🥵 🔥 🥵 🔥 Temperature PSA:
As much as we love that you love WoofWash, with tomorrow expected to be over 40 degrees we'd advise against washing your pooch tomorrow. The unit is stainless steel and the water warm, so gonna be hot in there. Best to wait until it's a bit cooler.

As much as we love choc eggs and other Easter goodies like hot cross buns and macadamia nuts, they can be toxic for your pups. Pet-Circle have a great guide on what to do if your pooch does get into them, including a toxicity calculator for chocolate by dog weight and type of chocolate- dark chocolate is the most dangerous.

Did you know a lot of essential oils are harmful to dogs, even when used in a diffuser? Here's a list of those particularly toxic.

What's good for humans is not always good for pets. This is especially true when it comes to essential oils. In this blog, we discuss why essential oils (particularly in oil diffusers) and pets do not mix.

If your pup eats everything, keep a close eye on pavements - Azalea flowers are everywhere right now.

If your pup eats everything, keep a close eye on pavements - Azalea flowers are everywhere right now.

🌸 Azaleas have just started flowering and whilst they may appear spectacular in full bloom, they are particularly toxic to most animals. Azaleas contain variable amounts of grayanotoxins throughout all parts of the plant, including the stem, leaves, flower and even the nectar.

Even small ingestions can cause gastrointestinal upset such as drooling, refusal to eat, vomiting and abdominal pain. Large ingestions can affect the central nervous system resulting in unsteadiness on the feet, drowsiness, weakness, and seizures. In severe poisonings, the cardiovascular system may also be affected.

At a cellular level, grayanotoxins interfere with sodium channels in the cell membrane. The resulting rush of sodium into cells throughout the body is responsible for the toxic effects. Both dogs and cats (as well as most other animals) may be poisoned by ingesting Azalea plant material, and recovery from poisoning can take days. Whilst there is no specific antidote, early veterinary treatment can be lifesaving.

☎ If your pet has ingested any part of an Azalea or another Rhododendron, please phone the Animal Poisons Helpline on 1300 869 738 (AU) or 0800 869 738 (NZ) for advice. The Helpline is a free service for all pet owners in Australia and New Zealand.

Please sign. Puppy farming has to stop!

Designer puppies can cost $6000 or more, but the price being paid by mother dogs in puppy farms is infinitely worse. It will cost her a life worth living.

Puppy farming is still legal in NSW, but with your help I’m going to change that. Sign my petition to ban puppy farming in NSW: https://www.emmahurstmp.com/petition_end_puppy_farming

Dogs imprisoned in puppy farms face a lifetime of suffering, held in barren pens, given no love or affection, and forced to give birth to litter after litter until their bodies give out.

And now dogs in NSW are at greater risk than ever before. With Victoria introducing tough new regulations to stamp out puppy farms and stop the overbreeding of dogs, these factory farms are increasingly relocating to NSW where our weak animal protection laws do almost nothing to protect these animals.

Sign the petition and together we can end cruel puppy farming in NSW: https://www.emmahurstmp.com/petition_end_puppy_farming

Great news!

BREAKING: NEW LAW! EXTREME ANIMAL ABUSERS BANNED FOR LIFE. NSW has just become the first state in Australia to implement automatic lifetime animal bans against extreme abusers. Our proposed new law has just passed both Houses.

We have also just secured eight-fold increases in penalties and double jail sentences for cases of animal abuse, interim animal bans while abusers are still in court, and an increase in the time period animal abuse cases can be brought before courts. Tougher penalties are now in place in NSW, taking us from the state with the weakest penalties to one of the toughest – indicating animal abuse is finally being recognised as the serious crime it is.

Shockingly, no one in NSW has ever been banned from animal guardianship or working with animals after a successful conviction of serious animal cruelty or be******ty. Now those found guilty will be automatically prohibited from having animals in their care or working with animals - for life.

We must get other states to follow in NSW’s footsteps, to crack down on these dangerous criminals and introduce the same protective mandatory, lifetime animal bans across Australia.

Another win- onwards and upwards!

My German Shepherd turned 2 down pillows into Bavaria at Christmas, trashed 4 remote controls, ate countless shoes and a house guest's underwear. What's the worst yours has done?

If your dog is one of those that eats everything, keep a close eye out for these berries!

🚨 **ALERT** 🚨

🌳 Please be cautious with your pets as Melia azedarach (also known as White Cedar, Chinaberry or Cape Lilac) berries are now ripe and falling from trees throughout Australia and New Zealand. This is a common tree in many Australian suburbs and grows in all states and territories.

Pets that eat these berries can potentially develop severe poisoning. The berries are known to contain meliatoxins, however the amount of toxin in the berries is highly variable between individual plants. The first signs of poisoning are typically gastrointestinal upset; excessive drooling, vomiting and diarrhoea. If enough berries are ingested, animals may become weak and have difficulty walking. Severely poisoned animals may have seizures and potentially become paralysed. There is no antidote, however early veterinary treatment can be lifesaving.

If you have a White Cedar tree growing in your neighbourhood, ensure you leash and observe your pet whilst near them. If your pet is likely to scavenge, do not walk them directly under the trees as the ripe berries are said to be sweet and highly palatable.

☎ If your pet has ingested Melia azedarach berries, please phone the Animal Poisons Helpline on 1300 869 738 (AU) or 0800 869 738 (NZ) for advice. The Animal Poisons Helpline is a free service for all pet owners in Australia and New Zealand.
