Well a lot can happen in 2 1/2 weeks. On the 5th March we took Kat and Diesel into the Gold Coast Turf club stables due to the arrival of Cyclone Alfred in Surfers Paradise. While there she pulled up sore, so had a vet check and two abscesses, 1 in the toe and 1 in the heel bulb. Well 2 1/2 weeks late she is thankfully on the improve thanks to Vet Imy and Gary (Master farrier) and today was the final fitting of her "squishy boot" on the impacted foot. See how well she is walking, a week ago it was really painful and hard to walk. The OTHER NEWS is that while she is in foal to Peptos Stylish Oak and due in 3rd week of November, and was then if all went well to be put to Legendarey their other stallion, we have found Kat is a GBRED carrier and so is Legendarey, so thanks to Ricky and Sue she will be re-bred to Peptos Stylish Oak, so there are no issues with the foals.
What is GBED - Glycogen branching enzyme deficiency (GBED) is a fatal disorder caused by a gene mutation found in the Quarter Horse and Paint Horse bloodlines.
GBED causes abortion in late-term pregnancies, stillbirth or severe muscle weakness and eventually death in newborn foals.
GBED prevents foals from properly storing sugars in the body. As a result, there is not enough energy to fuel the important organs and muscles of the body. This causes severe weakness and other clinical signs.
Genetic testing for diseases is required for most QH and APH horses in breeding programs to ensure healthy offspring and prevent financial loss associated with losing a foal.
