Would you be surprised if I said I don’t walk my dogs often? 😅
Now before anybody comes at me, I’m not saying to skip out on walks entirely. However, as someone with 2 Australian Shepherds, it’s incredibly important to me to ensure that my dogs’ needs are met by engaging them in activities that fulfill them, not just physically, but mentally. While walks can be incredibly beneficial in a lot of ways, there are so many other activities out there that you can try out, regardless of breed. Some of the sports we’ve picked up along the way of our dog sports journey are:
1️⃣ Agility: an activity where the dog and handler must work together as a team to navigate and complete a course of obstacles.
2️⃣ Heelwork for Obedience: teaching your dog to stay by your side and walk alongside you while focused on you, regardless of distractions.
3️⃣ Lure Coursing: a sport where the dog chases a “lure” (often a plastic bag) around a course to satisfy their desire to hunt and chase.
4️⃣ Dock Diving: a sport where the dog jumps off of an elevated dock after a toy into the water
5️⃣ Nosework: also known as scent detection, this is a sport where your dog harnesses their nose to pinpoint the source and location of odour
6️⃣ Dry land sledding: if your dog loves running and pulling, this might be a sport for you. This is a sport where a dog or a team of dogs pulls a human on a scooter or bike to complete a course together.
Not only have these sports been very fun to do with my dogs, it’s strengthened our relationship in so many ways.
