Happy World Seal Day
In celebration of World Seal Day and these magnificent creatures, let's revisit a story of hope!
In 2024, an Australian Fur Seal is back in the ocean after was rescued by Melbourne Zoo’s Marine Response Unit (MRU).
The seal was spotted by a keen-eyed beachgoer near Frankston’s Oliver’s Hill boat ramp, who noticed a fishing hook and line embedded in its snout and alerted the MRU.
Arriving promptly, the team worked carefully to safely capture the seal and remove the dangerous fishing gear. The seal was then released back into its natural habitat, where its remarkable ability to heal in saltwater is expected to ensure a speedy recovery.

A mighty Wedge-tailed Eagle was found injured after a huge storm in 2024.
After 389 days in Healesville Sanctuary's care, the aptly named "Storm" was released back into the wild.
He was able to build his flight fitness in the Sanctuary's state-of-the-art Raptor Rehabilitation Centre before soaring into the skies once more.
A huge thank you to Tony and the Westernport Water team for rescuing Storm and assisting with his release!

It's World Recycling Day so here's one great way you can help! ♻️
Do you have any old phones lying around at home? Donate them at the zoo during your next visit!
Why? Because one of the biggest threats to Critically Endangered Eastern Lowland Gorillas is the mining of minerals such as coltan, a metallic ore used in mobile phones and other electronic devices. Not only does mining destroy forest habitat, but it brings people and wild Gorillas into closer contact, increasing their risk of injury and disease. The best thing you can do is use your phone, or any technological device, for as long as possible. When you do need a new phone, you can help wild Gorillas by recycling your old phone through our They’re Calling On You program, supporting the work of the Gorilla Doctors. 🦍
We've got mobile donation bins at all four of our zoos, just ask one of our friendly staff or volunteers to show you where!
A huge thanks to our recycling partners MobileMuster and PhoneCycle Australia
