There's a huge difference between knowing your dressage test & understanding your dressage test.
When you know your test, you know the order of movements that you need to ride.
When you understand your test, you not only know the order of movements, but you know how each of those movements connect.
You know how to make each movement flow out of one another.
An example of this is the lateral movements.
In a test you'll never be asked to show a bending lateral movement like a shoulder in or half pass off a straight line.
The tests are designed so that you'll always ride these movements out of a corner or a volte or another bending lateral movement so that you can use these things to set you up for the movement.
When you understand how the tests work: you can do this.
When you're just riding the movements, then you'll probably miss these little things that make a huge difference in your scores.
This doesn't just apply to the lateral movements btwโฆ
There are so many places in your tests where you'll be able to pick up easy marks just by understanding the tests & how each of the movements work better.

Just in case you were wondering what it's like to work with me...
Take it from the riders like you who came to me feeling stuck, lost, frustrated, unsure how to take the next step in their riding.
My approach to coaching is to break down each step of training into easy to understand steps for both you and your horse.
So that you are not only able to understand how & why you're getting the results you are in your lessons - but you're able to replicate them on your own.
So you can make progress on your own!
๐๐ผ If right now riding your horse is feeling complicated.
๐๐ผ If right now you're not getting the results you want to be getting in your riding.
๐๐ผ If right now riding your horse feels frustrating or a chore.
๐๐ผ If right now you're feeling like the path you're on right now is the only way.
It's time to make a change ๐ซ
My clients have proved that it is very possible to go from feeling these feelings to feeling confident, relaxed, happy...
"Far exceeding my initial goals"
Oh, and my clients average 70%+ in their dressage tests.
If you're ready to work with a coach who:

Training the short steps encourages your horse to sit more on their hindlegs, which takes the weight of the horses shoulders, which makes it easier for your horse to work in a light contact.

Encouraging the horse to take their weight on their hindlegs to free up the shoulders also has the added benefit of allowing the horse the space to create bigger, freer steps - creating better movement.

Your core is your stabiliser - if you are not engaging your core correctly, then you will find it impossible to keep yourself balanced and steady in the saddle.
By engaging your core, you are able to absorb the movement in your seat so you can easily be still in the rest of your body.

When your horse is working correctly through the connection, they suck you into their back, which makes it really easy to sit to.
If the horse is hollow over the back, then they bounce you off instead of suck you in - which makes it really hard for even the best rider to sit to.
Thatโs why when you see riders sitting those big extended trots, they are able to be so still.
1๏ธโฃ Because they are stabilising themselves through their core.
2๏ธโฃ Because the horse is working correctly over the back, which sucks them in.

Once I was lunging a horse that spun and bolted off so fast that I flew through the air, skidded face first into the ground. If I hadnโt let go I would have been dragged.
I picked myself back up off the ground, fetched the horse from the other end of the arena, & reassessed how I was going to move forward.
As much as I just wanted to label this horse an "asshole" & call it a day - I had to wonder to myself what could have possibly made him do this.
Nothing had spooked him
I hadnโt asked for anything new
There were absolutely no changes in that moment that could have been a catalyst for such a sudden explosion.
What this horse did have on the ground was a tendency for being pushy, never keeping his feet still, & occasionally even biting.
Under saddle, he would buck & bolt out of nowhere...
The people around him would either call his behaviours โcute quirksโ or try to force him into submission.
Neither of these approaches could be successful because these behaviours werenโt funny personality traits or him being naughty.
They were him letting his anxiety out and initiating his natural flight response in the only way he knew how.
Because horses are flight animals that depend on a leader to keep them safe.
So thatโs what I became for him.
I started with simple cues for simple patterns that I reinforced with big praise. When he could do those easily, I graduated him to slightly more difficult patterns, repeating the process.
When he started showing signs of his old behaviours, I took him back to the very first simple, easy patterns and repeated them until he relaxed before moving on again.
Training horses isnโt a race to the finish line, a test of brute force or playing with dolls. These are living breathing animals who are individuals just like people who just need to feel guided and safe.
If you want to learn how to transform your horse from "difficult", "naughty" or "quirky" to "easy to do everything with" [without losing that spark that
Thereโs a big difference between being your horse's leader and โshowing them whoโs bossโ.
The second phrase makes me cringe.
When I hear someone talking about โshowing the horse whoโs bossโ, it usually comes with the connotations that theyโre trying to force their horse to do something despite their feelings about it.
Thereโs no consideration that the horse may be scared or anxious or insecure or uncomfortable or in pain or not understanding what you want from them.
Itโs โI asked, so the horse needs to doโ.
If this is you, I want you to know that thereโs a better way.
If your horse isnโt doing something that youโve asked them to do or if your horse is reacting badly in a certain situation - there is almost always an underlying issue that is stopping the horse from doing the thing you want.
Thatโs where being your horses leader comes in.
Instead of forcing your horse to โget overโ the thing, a good leader figures out why the horses isnโt doing the thing you want them to do & works on fixing the cause.
I know you love your horse & I know that something in you is telling you this isnโt right when you have to force your horse into a situation that they donโt want to be in.
Trust those instincts.
I promise you, if you take a step back and work on the root cause of whatever problem youโre having with your horse, you wonโt have to feel that icky feeling anymore.
Iโm not saying youโll never have to apply pressure, or youโll never struggle againโฆ
But if you learn to read your horses body language & set them up to be able to feel good about giving you the things you want - then both you and your horse are going to find that you love your rides so much more.
If youโre ready to say goodbye to fear, pressure & insecurity & start training your horse in a way that feels good for both of you, then youโre going to want to join FROM THE GROUND UP.
Inside this Masterclass I will be teaching you how to understan

Sebastian, the Clydie x TB, arrived a green broken 5 year old & left training most of the elementary work.
As you'll see in the first clip, he arrived with no concept of how to balance himself in a forward rhythm, in straightness or through the connection.
By the end of his stay, he was responsive off my forwards aids, able to maintain straightness through a variety of movements & working through the connection.
I am extremely proud of how far he came during his time with me & wish his owner all the success with him now he has returned home.

Half way through this half pass Quinte wanted to put it in the โtoo hard basketโ & for her that meant rearing vertical.
See how she comes out of the connection - if I hadnโt taken time out of the movement to regain that connection - I kid you not when I say we would have been vertical.
There was a long time when I wasnโt able to deactivate these moments because I hadnโt trained her to give me a really good response when I asked her to remain connected.
In fact, there was a long time when I would have felt her come out of the connection like that, known she was about to rear & just thrown it all away & held on.

So just like in this video, if you can maintain the connection, then you can usually deactivate the explosion.
Whether that explosion is rearing or spooking or bolting or something else.
I couldnโt have done this without a solid understanding of the connection & how to train it - which only happened through years of training, riding a bunch of different horses in daily lessons while working as a working student & training this mare that was always exceptionally difficult in the contact.
Which is why I created my new masterclass CONNECTION - because I know you donโt have time for that!
In this virtual Masterclass I have gathered everything you need to know about contact, frame & connection so that you donโt have to learn it the hard way.

Contrary to popular belief, getting a horse stretching through the contact is not something most horses will do naturally if you just throw long reins at them [Seb here used to really struggle with the concept].
A stretching frame is something that needs to be trained if you want your horse to do it correctly.
You see, the stretch isn't just your horses neck getting longer.
