If you plan to take your dog to the beach, it’s important to be aware of sand impaction. This life-threatening emergency occurs when a dog ingests too much sand, usually inadvertently forming an intestinal blockage. 🏖️🐕

Signs can develop anywhere from a few hours to a few days later, typically including vomiting, appetite loss, and lethargy. If you see these signs following a trip to the beach, you can seek veterinary treatment immediately. 🚨🐾

Treatment will depend on how much sand is impacted and how sick your dog is. Most dogs require hospitalisation for intravenous fluids, medications, and X-rays to monitor the sand’s movement. 🏥🩺
Surgery should be avoided due to the infection risk of removing millions of grains of dirty sand. Fortunately, most dogs do very well with medical management. 🐶❤️

Can Cats Predict the Weather?

Cats can’t affect how the wind blows but can pick up subtle signals that the weather changes.

Here’s how they do it:

• A cat’s inner ear is very sensitive and can detect the drop in barometric pressure that typically precedes a thunderstorm.
• Cats have 40 times as many scent receptors as humans, so they can detect the smell of approaching rain. Lightning also has a distinct odour caused by the release of ozone gas.
• A cat’s strong sense of hearing enables them to hear the rumble of thunder long before a human can.
• Cats have extra-sensitive nerve endings in their paw pads called Pacinian corpuscles, enabling them to detect even the tiniest vibrations.
