Here's a cool heart murmur I recorded today for your Friday evening listening pleasure. The sound and "video" don't match up exactly as I had to cut the sound from the video to enhance it so that it can be heard better. A normal heart should be "lub-dub" with none of the long "whirring" afterwards. This is turbulence of blood due to leaky heart valves. Horse is clinically fine and has had this murmur for years.

This little fella had facial swelling and discharge (see photo in comments) On exam we found a fairly obvious tract where the infection (from a suspected tooth root abscess) was also draining into the mouth. Because it is the 108 ( 4th premolar) the roots don’t sit in the sinus and are thankfully not causing a sinusitis.

Given that I listen to over 1500 hearts a year, I have recently upgraded (with a little push from Equiimed ) to a digital stethoscope with ECG capability which will allow me to record and share (if needed) any abnormal heart sounds that MAY indicate a problem. While a lot of horses have “normal” abnormal heart sounds and rhythms, only some are indicative of a serious problem and with this technology we will hopefully be able to determine which ones need further assessment (cardiac ultrasound). Recordings won’t be made for every horse - it’s one of those 🤞🏼 I don’t go to the Ute and get this out situations 😉

This horse had all of his incisors ( and a canine ) removed because of EOTRH yesterday ! This is a few hours post op - how frigging good is this ? These animals will never cease to amaze me 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Very very fortunate to be able to get this tooth out despite just a sliver of clinical crown left ( without having to resort to more advanced surgical techniques. ) Came out in pieces but came out orally which is a win in my book any day. Too tired after a loooong day in Bonnie Rock to make a good video so I let iMovie do it for me. Nasty diastema ( gap ) between the last and second last teeth in this middle aged hose. Lots of feed trapping deep below the gum line causing painful periodontal disease. These issues are often bilateral ( both sides ) and at the end of the video is the space where we removed the tooth ( 410 ) last visit a couple of months ago. The gum as healed beautifully and is no longer infected and painful. This is what a socket ( alveolus ) looks like about 3 and a half weeks after extraction of a tooth from a young horse ( see the tooth in the comments section - FB won’t let me post videos and photos together. ) In another week or two the gum will have grown over and the horse will be pain free. In this case the tooth was deviated towards the tongue, creating deep periodontal pockets on either side of the tooth - we don’t like taking young teeth out but sometimes its the best thing for the horse.
