A huge thank you to Mack and Simone for being our decoy working dog last Saturday!
Mack is one of our wonderful dogs in our Manners classes who is so in-tune with his guardians. He has shown he is also superb as a decoy dog!
Well done team Mack and Simone!

Sharing a favourite decoy dog post from the past because I loved her then and I love her now. Evie was one of the rockstar helper dogs who has helped us rehabilitate other dogs who are uncomfortable with dogs.
Decoy dog work is fun and there are LOTS of treats and spoiling on offer for their amazing efforts.
Sadly Evie is one of a number of our helpers that has crossed the rainbow bridge. We desperately need more amazing dogs of all shapes and sizes to help us with this important work. These dogs are special dogs.
If you think you and your dog could occasionally help us we would love to hear from you. The dogs need to be adults who are comfortable with the world. We promise we will spoil them.

Sharing for our Whippet people. It's getting colder now and we know how difficult it is to find well fitting coats for your breed. Our friends at Juddabug Whippet Couture make beautiful, high quality, warm coats specifically to fit Whippets. Check out their page for a link to their store. Highly recommend.
Check out these handsome lads, Xan, Tex, Dale and Henry in their stunning new quilted coats. These boys will be toasty and warm during this chilly Gippsland weather!
Thank you to their mumma Christine for sending this photo through!
Head to our online store to order your best friend a brand new warm coat for this winter.

Be sure to send your photos through so that we can feature them on our socials!

Karen spent Monday and Tuesday at the Animal Training Workshop operated by ZooSpensfull at Sydney Zoo.
Our team regularly attend continuing education events to stay current and keep up with the latest learnings in our field. This event encompassed emergency recalls, co-operative care and training animals in a group context.
The learning opportunities were fantastic and it was really wonderful to catch up with friends and make new friends too.
Massive thank you to ZooSpencefull and the team at Sydney Zoo. This was a really wonderful event.
Always look to learn more, never trust anyone who thinks they have nothing to learn.

Nosework - I go on and on about the therapeutic value of this activity. I seriously love watching the joy the dogs get from this activity, the confidence building, and the understanding between the dog and their special person.
Stefan recently completed Intro to Nosework. Stefan was born blind. Stefan had a blast with his guardian Pam. He solved puzzles. He found the hides. He had us all in awe of his ability and his joy.
Thank you Pam for sharing your beautiful boy with us. It was a very special experience for all who witnessed it. As an instructor this was a wonderful challenge for me.
His joy was contagious. Keep sniffing. You rock.

We had great fun teaching these puppies and parents the ins and outs of puppy socialization, enrichment, and training. Look at those faces for cuteness overload! No you're not seeing double - Frida and Rome are very much wonderful individuals!

Sending well wishes to our class mates who were unwell for graduation week. We had a lot of fun teaching these puppies!

Not all activities need to be going for a walk or chasing a ball. Some physical activity is great. There are some slower activities that can also promote those calmer behaviours.
Hania is not a big foodie - she would much rather play ball and run around. However, if we can present some food (cheese spread, greek yoghurt, ham and anchovy paste, peanut butter in this case) in something, rather than simply handing things to her, she prefers the challenge of working things out. It's a mental exercise for her.
We regularly use little puzzle toys for all four of our dogs during the week, along with our regular walks, ball and play time, and active training time.
To promote a healthier lifestyle, cover off physical, play, mental, training and rest.

Is it time to get a new pet?
This is a question that I wish everyone really took time with and considered before making such a huge decision. All going well this is a decision that will affect every single day of your life for more than a decade (hopefully much more).
For this post I will discuss puppies - but kittens, cats, dogs, birds and any other creature you may welcome into your home will need to have your time to learn, settle in and most importantly get to know and trust you and your family too.
Puppies need a considerable amount of time and effort invested in them. Ideally they should be starting socialisation to other dogs/ animals prior to 12 weeks of age. They need to start puppy training as soon as possible. They need to learn to play with humans gently, learn some manners, explore and learn about novel items, they need to learn how life in our strange human world works. All of this requires your guidance and care
If you are not prepared to dedicate a substantial amount of effort into building a well adjusted family member then you do not have time for a new pet. I regularly see puppies miss crucial lessons due to events in people's social lives. Parties, outings, sport, etc. You can still have these things if you plan your time to also prioritize puppy training. It's not a luxury. It's a necessity for their well-being.
Animals should not be blamed for what they have not had the opportunity to learn.
If you can't juggle in your new pets basic needs then it is not the right time.
Photo of Ahanu because he was an unplanned addition. We talked through adopting him and how between us we could manage to give him what he needed. We made it work even though we are always time poor - because adoption is a promise to give them everything they need and then some.
I know people will find this post harsh but I speak on behalf of every animal that is surrendered or worse lives in a home where they are viewed as an annoyance. It needs to be said. Getting a home is a lottery for animals. Some win the jackpot and some get so much less than they deserve.

At Dog Solutions we will do anything we can to help make your dog more comfortable with the difficult things life throws. This is a recent photo of Corey at Nosework class helping make the big bad bath less scary.
Corey is Maisie's favourite trainer so whilst this set up was not done for her, how could we not let her have a love in too 💕.

Here's an oldie to reshare. It is going to be really hot for the next 4 or 5 days, with Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday in the high 30's along with warm nights for us Victorians. It's important to keep yourselves and your pets cool and hydrated where you can, and to top up some water stations for the local wildlife also.
Happy International Dog Day 2022! Share your favourite dog picture of 2022 (so far) to celebrate International Dog Day!
Winter Challenge - 06 - Recall ==================== Recall is one of the most important behaviours you can teach your dog. Reliable recall even more so. Recall is coming back when called. Starting small with minimal distractions is key. Set up your environment for success! Trying to perform your first ever recall for 100 meters away, surrounded by rabbits, kangaroos and endless supplies of duck poo, just doesn't end well for anyone! Reliable recall focuses on being the best fun to be with/best treat dispenser/best toy wrangler/best ball thrower/best butt scratcher so your dog chooses to come back to you for these reasons, not through fear or intimidation (no one wants to come back to a screaming banshee - not even screaming banshee's husband). Be the fun place! As with all new behaviours, start with simply low or no distractions. Have your rewards ready! #winterchallenge #dogsolutions #maisie #scottishterrier #scottiedog #learning
Winter Challenge - 05 - Down ==================== Learning to down on cue is a great behaviour. We call this "down", but you can call this "drop", "lay", "lie down", "quarter pounder with cheese" or anything as long as it's consistent. The way we like to teach down is from a standing position, rather than the sit and crawl, as this is a more fluid movement for most dogs. As with all new behaviours, start with simply low or no distractions. Have your rewards ready! #winterchallenge #dogsolutions #maone #boxerdog #learning
Winter Challenge - 04 - Placement - On Your Mat ================================ Placement behaviour is our next challenge for you. Similar to stay, we're asking our dogs to move to a location/station/target on cue. As with all new behaviours, start with simply low or no distractions. Have your rewards ready! We use a mat or towel initially with this behaviour, as once known, it's easy to move a mat or towel onto a bed, chair, specific location in the house for our cue. Start by having a consistent towel or mat for your training. Lure your dog onto the mat and ask for a sit or down, mark the behaviour and reward. Add in your verbal cue ("mat", "towel", "place", "station", "on your mat" etc) once you dog is moving onto the mat/towel consistently. Cues are often verbal, but can be visual, and can be something completely different. An example of good placement behaviour could be to have your dog go to their mat when the front door bell rings. #winterchallenge #dogsolutions #freyja #staffycross #learning
Winter Challenge - 03 - Stay - Bonus Round! ============================= Option 1 - If you have multiple dogs, have all of them stay in a position, before returning to them and rewarding for the stay behaviour. Option 2 - Increase the distraction with additional items, sounds, interesting places, other people etc. Ask for a stay while additional distractions are present, and reward for the stay behaviour. In both cases, keep it short - we'd like to succeed with small behaviours before increasing the duration, distance, and other distractions. #winterchallenge #dogsolutions #ashanee #maone #hania #boxerdog #germanshepherd #learning
Ashanee - Sit and Stay
Winter Challenge - 03 - Stay ==================== Stay is a really important behaviour to learn. This allows you to place your dog safely in a position while you can continue to move around and do other things. As with all new behaviours, start with simply low or no distractions. Have your rewards ready! The easiest stay is a sit and stay (you can do down and stay, stand and stay etc as you progress). Pop your dog into a sit in front of you. Place a big "stop sign" hand in front of them with the cue "Stay". Move away (even just a little step) and come back to them (don't call them back to you). Mark the behaviour and at the end and reward. We also include an "end of excercise" cue (you can hear us use the word "free"), which used consistently, your dog will start to wait for you to say this, making your stay duration much more reliable. #winterchallenge #dogsolutions #ashanee #boxerdog #heartbreaker #learning
Because we all need to see something positive. Pleased to see you guys interested in this topic. It is very important. Stay strong. We miss you. We are thinking about you and we wish you all good health and less worries. Hugs to all who may need one right now.
Took this back in April. You are welcome :-). Pumba waving when he graduated from Puppy Training. Learn the concepts and you can teach your puppy lots of fun things. We loved Pumba's family's efforts. Cudo's for taking your puppy training and running with it. Keep up the great work. #dogsolutions #dogs #cute #puppy
We had a surprise visitor for our last Saturday Manners class of the year - "Canis Husbandus Familiaris", one of the legendary "pariah" or untrainable dogs. He performed a quick dance off with students, and then disappeared before he could be leashed. Thank you to everyone who made coming back to training possible - our wonderful venue, our wonderful team, and of course you - our wonderful clients and friends. #dogs #dogsolutionsau #olddognewtricks #dogtraining #fun
These moments!!!! This is Zuki. She is 15 weeks old. Her mum attended todays session and sent us through this beautiful clip of Zuki doing toy preference tests. She is pretty stoked and said we are welcome to share this so we are:-).We love this so much. Zuki has already experienced a terrifying dog encounter at such a young age (through no fault of her family). We are working on ensuring we show Zuki that life is good, dogs can be nice, and training is super fun We see so much positive here. Pretty clear about her favourite. But she will still have them all :-). Thank you to each of you who send your videos and share your wins with us. How can we not be motivated when we work with such pro active folks. #toypreferencetest #puppy #dogsolutions #engagement #doggiekryptonite
