And it's a wrap! Today was our first time in the market space, and our little stand at the Spring Launch was a resounding success. So many curious people who loved to look at the bees and taste the different honeys - Blackburn, Forest Hill and the creamed honey 🍯 were firm favourites - and our backyard eggs 🥚🐔🥚 were also quick to go.

A big thanks to my youngest daughter who not only handled all the cash sales, but sold a number of her home-crafted crocheted queen bees! 🐝👑🐝 Extra pocket money for her! (Of course now I also need to pay her weekend penalty rates...)

This Saturday in Blackburn South will be having their Spring Launch! We're expecting a 22° day, so it should be glorious.

There will be face painting, a butterfly enclosure 🦋, mini golf ⛳, food demos, kids and adults DIY... and we'll be bringing some bees and honey along too! 🐝🍯🐝

It's all happening between 11 and 3, make sure you say hi!

Looking for local honey? If you're in make sure you check out on Eley Rd!

Mattia and his team have been using our honey for a few years now, and it goes into their croissants, the shortbread in their tarts, some of the biscuits and even a little bit in their spelt bread - yum!

Get on down and say hi to his team - supporting local businesses!

Introducing our brand new honey collection box!

We've decided to extend the life of some of our old hive boxes by upcycling them to make an easy-to-access pickup zone for our customers to collect their orders - just lift the lid!

Every now and then, a customer gives us a gift of appreciation - sometimes fruit or fresh veggies, plants for the garden, jam, lemon butter, even some cool beard oil (thx !)

Tonight a regular customer picked up some creamed honey and to my surprise there was some freshly baked ginger bread men from left in its place - yum!

It's so lovely to receive these gifts, as we still get a buzz from each and every sale - knowing that people love our honey is a wonderful feeling, but getting a gift as well? That's next level. 🙌🙏

It's great to be stocked at once more! They've been our local source of fresh fruit and veggies since I was a kid, and it's great to see our honey on their shelves 😍

And with honey from our main apiary only 400 metres away, you can't get lower food miles.than that!

Spot the bees! It's not just the leaves of rocket that are edible - the flowers are too - and our bees love getting the pollen and nectar from these beauties.

The lazy gardener in us is happy to let rocket go to seed, it just means there will be more next season! And of course, allowing extra feed for the bees is a great bonus.

Today was the final packdowns for our hives, with five site visits, including Shelley's back yard in

This photo was taken before the packdowns, where we removed one box from each hive, making sure to leave enough honey for the bees to feed on over winter.

These girls have done very well, producing almost 65kg per hive! And it tastes great too 😀

And yes, they've been released, they came in with some harvested frames that are currently being processed. No unnecessary deaths here!

It's a lovely morning and the bees are out - this garden is always full of fresh produce, and it's great to see the avocado doing so well!
Autumn is time for packing down hives, so we've removed the top box and will likely reduce it to two in a few weeks to allow the bees to prepare for winter.

A lovely part of being a beekeeper is the occasional gift hive hosts give you. Today Harry in Vermont presented me with a couple of cucumbers and squash from his veggie patch, and Lenny from Vermont gave me some home-made raspberry mead - made with their own raspberries and some of the honey from their recent hive harvest! Can't wait to try it 🙂

It's perfect beekeeping weather, and it's great to be able to do an inspection of a few hives at lunchtime. They've been quite busy, with these hives giving us their second big harvest so far this season.

Hive host Harry and his family are certainly enjoying their new tenants!

Five years ago today, hive host extraordinare Carolyn made me this badge for my bee-suit. I felt like a scout earning their beekeeping badge!
Alas, it's on an old suit now, but I wore this with pride.

Huge props to for her creativity and crafting prowess 🙌

This definitely tickles my inner grammar nerd! I reckon my favourite term would have to be a "charm" of bees - love it!

This latest addition to the Bearded Bee family is going gangbusters, with a healthy harvest all ready to go. Harry and his young family love seeing the bees complement their veggie patches and fruit trees - we can't wait to see what it tastes like!

Honey from these hives will be processed this week – get onto the wait list to avoid missing out!

It's swarm season!

Sometimes swarms don't stick around for long - I got a call at 3pm today about "some bees", and 45 minutes later they'd moved on.

Usually a swarm may stay on a tree for up to a few days until they find better digs - it may be a bait hive, a possum box, or a cavity in someone's wall or roof. (That's when removing bees gets really expensive!)

Bees are at their most passive when they're swarming; they're much more interested in protecting the queen and staying alive. Leave them bee, and they're harmless.

If you do see a swarm, call a local beekeeper! They'll be able to rehouse them in a bee-friendly environment.
Win!

Pretty thrilled to now be stocked at - it's great to be able to offer people honey with ridiculously low food miles - how does 400 metres from hives to store sound? 😀🐝🍯

Also, it's a total buzz to be stocked in a store our family has shopped in for decades...

Wasps are the worst. This is the native paper wasp, and if you think getting stung by a bee is bad, then you definitely don't want one from one of these.
This morning I removed the nest from a suburban back yard and destroyed the wasps and nest. Hopefully that will be the last time their kids cop a sting from a wasp!
