Paws Up to Deeks and his Mum for doing his recommended exercises 🐾🐾🐾🐾🐾
I absolutely love it when my clients work with their fur babies on a regular basis doing their prescribed exercises and I love it even more when they send me a video. This is Deeks and he is making great progress by doing his exercises on a regular basis.
In this video Deeks is doing basic Cavaletti. Cavaletti is a great way to improve proprioception (the connection between the paws and the brain).

THEY SAY ALL THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE GET BETTER WITH AGE!
These words describe my handsome boy Dudley pawfectly - many don't know that Dudley was actually born on a very significant day in my life and it was this that led me to him. From the moment I first met him he filled my heart with love and that loved has grown stronger with each year that passes.

Residents of the Sunshine Coast please use caution if walking your pets around the areas of Buddina, Minyama, Pt Cartwright and La Balsa.

We unfortunately have had a series of patients presenting with alike symptoms that may suggest a toxicity by ingestion. Although we are unable to confirm the cause of these presentations the link to these patients is the area that they have walked within the 12 hours prior.

Symptoms to look out for are gastrointestinal upsets, lethargy, or any change to your pets behaviour.

We have chosen to err on the side of caution and have made local authorities aware.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to us or your local veterinarian if you have concern.

Cruciate Ligament - what is it and what role does it play?

When your vet or therapist talks about cruciate ligaments they are referring to a cross shaped band of fibrous tissue that sits inside the knee joint holding the joint together. It is made up of two ligaments - The Cranial (aka ACL in humans) and the Caudal ligament, these two ligaments cross over and attach the Femur (thigh bone) to the Tibia (shin bone) preventing the Tibia shifting forward relative to the Femur and stopping the Stifle (equivalent to the human knee) over extending or rotating.

When your vet tells you that your dog has done their Cruciate, it means they have either partially or completely ruptured one of these two ligaments which has caused the Stifle joint to become unstable and swollen. Your dog will generally be presenting with some discomfort and lameness.

In between the Femur and Tibia there is cartilage known as the medial and lateral menisci, when the Cruciate is ruptured the Meniscus becomes vulnerable to the forces of the bones moving in abnormal ways which can cause it to also tear.

Cruciate Ligament rupture is the most common knee injury in dogs, if your dog is suddenly showing hind limb lameness than there is a good chance they have ruptured a cruciate ligament.

If you suspect your dog has damaged their cruciate then the only step to take is to get them to their vet for a full diagnoses.

Instability and pain can only lead to further issues if left diagnosed and treated.

It can affect any dog big or small.

Today I would like to introduce you to Cooper who had his cruciate ligament repaired last Thursday so is at the beginning of his rehab and recovery journey.

Cruciate tear/rupture can happen to any dog at any time, however outlined below are some of the reasons this might occur

1. Obesity
2. Strenuous and repetitive exercise (that includes repetitive ball throwing at the park)
3. Patients with other conditions such as Hip dysplasia
4. Genetic predisposition in family lines (labradors, golden retrievers, rottweilers, german shepherds and newfoundlands are just a few that seem to be prone to this injury).

This week we have met the Scooby and Ruby who have both undergone Cruciate Ligament repair surgery and are both at different stages in recovery and Rehab.

Today we will meet our third fur-baby Alex who is well into his recovery for Cruciate Ligament rupture - but Mr Alex is a little different as he ruptured ligaments in both legs within a few weeks of each other 😢 he has had one leg repaired and once it is strong enough he will be going back in to have the second leg repaired. Rehab has become a daily ritual in Alex's house, together with regular massage and laser therapy, hydrotherapy and physiotherapy. But in true Lab fashion, he is always happy and wagging his tail anyway, especially when he gets a new toy. 💙 🐾

Yesterday we met the handsome Scooby who is currently recovering from cruciate ligament surgery and today we meet the sweet Ruby who underwent her cruciate repair surgery yesterday, so has her full rehab journey ahead 💜 🐾

Cruciate Ligament tear is becoming more and more common among our fur-babies. Over the coming weeks we will be looking more closely at the role of the cruciate ligament and why it is common for it to tear.

06/07/2022

Scooby loving every moment of his recent therapy treatment. Scooby is currently rehabbing after undergoing a recent TPLO surgery to repair his cruciate ligament. Massage is extremely beneficial in post surgery cases to help reduce the stress that often accompanies forced bed rest, aid in the reduction of pain, reduce post surgery inflammation, limit atrophy in the affected limb and improve range of motion and that is just a few of the benefits. And I am sure Scooby will agree, it feels pretty good as well 💙 🐾

Last night I received the heartbreaking news that Locky a wonderful, happy and sweet old Labrador said his final goodbyes to his amazing family on Monday. Locky has an extra special place in my heart as he was my very first official therapy client on 2nd of February 2019 💙 it didn't matter how much pain and discomfort Locky was feeling, I was always greeted with pure happiness and lots of cuddles, his smile would light up the room.

I think of my clients dogs with the same love as I think of my own and it crushes my heart everytime one has to make that final journey. I would like to send love and hugs to Locky's Mum, Dad and Human sister and a extra big hug to his best mate and fur brother Dozer 💙

RIP Locky - may heaven be full of huge parks to play in and of course lots of banana and peanut butter biccies - I will miss you always, thank you for being you 💔💙🌈

You lived for 13 years but will be loved for eternity 🐾

RIP STAN 24/09/2009 - 24/04/2022

Working with dogs everyday can be one of the most rewarding careers in the world but it can also be one of the most heartbreaking 💔

Saying goodbye to the best souls the universe has to offer is heartbreaking to say the least, whilst away this past week I received the news that one of the sweetest souls I know said his final goodbyes and crossed the rainbow bridge. His name was Stan and he was his Mum's and sisters best friend, Stan crossed peacefully with his Mum and sister by his side. 🌈

Stan captured a piece of my heart from the first moment i met him, he knew I always carried home baked cookies and knew exactly where they were kept and on many occasions thought I was just bit to slow at passing them out so decided to help me along by bringing my bag to me (he was my little cookie boy) 💙 he was always excited to see me and had the biggest and brightest smile. Stan you brightened the world with that wonderful smile and your big heart which was full of love for everyone. You will be missed dearly by all that ever met you. Rest In Peace my little buddy.

Testimonial for Paw Prints Animal Therapies

Last year our family lost the love of our lives.

A beautiful old Labrador called Artie (or Arthur, if he was in trouble!)

He was there for us morning, noon and night, with quiet understanding and endless love.

More precious than gold, more valuable than we knew, until we had to say goodbye.

Artie’s last years were possibly the loveliest of all. We were fortunate to meet Amanda Whelan, whose wisdom guided us through the care of our beloved old boy. After our first meeting with Amanda, we knew that she would become an important person in the care of our family’s senior statesman. Through her regular household visits, providing physical therapy and love for Artie, we grew to understand what a privilege it is to nurture an older dog through his last years. What a gift Amanda was to our whole family, not just Artie. We loved watching her work on Artie’s tired old limbs as she tenderly massaged him. They shared a quiet communication around his pain through a raised head or a nudge with his wet nose to her hands. It was a kind of magic between them both and we found ourselves without the need to be anywhere else or doing anything more important than watching this beautiful transaction between dog and therapist. For anyone considering this treatment for their own animal, please know that no-one will take more care and attend more skilfully to your elderly pet than Amanda.

When Artie passed away last month, we were bereft. Amanda became our therapist then as she supported us along our grief journey. Ours was a shared love of Artie and we couldn’t have been more clearly understood in our time of need than with Amanda’s messages of care and concern for our family. Thank you for everything Amanda, we are indebted to you for all that you have shared with us over Artie’s twilight years. Your work is so important to those whom you meet and work with. On behalf of Artie and his family, thank you – may you continue to bless the lives of all those who have the privilege of your company in the care of their animals
