This gorgeous girl 👑 was born in April 2024 and is overwintering in a nuc with her 🐝 daughters. She is laying a beautiful pattern and her gentle temperament has transferred to her 🐝🐝daughters too.
In September she will go to the beekeeper who placed an order for a nucleus hive in Spring 2024.

Here's some things you can do for bees
🐝Plant a bee friendly garden, let herbs and veggies go to seed.
🐝Put a few corks or pebbles in your birdbath as landing pads for bees.
🐝Overlook those early Spring weeds (dandelion, soursops)- they're the first food of the new season for bees.
🐝Avoid spraying pesticides

When worker bees try to be queens, this happens! 😱
Worker bees do have ovaries but their ovulation is suppressed by the Queen's pheromone. When a hive becomes queenless for an extended period (several reasons why this can happen), the workers ovaries become active and they begin laying eggs. The eggs are infertile because the workers have never mated and the resulting bees are a hybrid 'runt' that is about the size of a worker but with enlarged eyes like a typical drone. The queen's long abdomen allows her to deposit one egg per cell, but the workers don't have that ability so this 'splat' of eggs in every cell is a telltale sign of laying workers.
