Yikes!

USDA researchers have made a critical discovery in the fight against honey bee colony collapse in the U.S. 🐝🇺🇸

After investigating severe hive losses reported in early 2025, scientists found widespread infection with Deformed Wing Virus A & B and Acute Bee Paralysis Virus — both major threats to bee survival.

These viruses are spread by Varroa mites, and nearly all mites sampled were found to be resistant to amitraz, the key miticide relied on by most beekeepers.

This resistance is now believed to be a major factor behind the loss of over 60% of commercial colonies.

Readying hives for winter today, I found some hives have already propolised their frames and have snuggled in for a long winter, whilst others are taking advantage of the tiny nectar flow brought on by the recent sprinkling of rain. Not much honey in the brood boxes, so ive left a super of honey on top.
