We all know how to pat a dog....right❓ Pat, pat, rub, rub...right on top of the head.
What if they are giving signs they don't like it?
Would that make us stop or would we continue because WE like to pat our dogs?
Yup, we all know how, but do we know the signals shown when dogs are not appreciating it, or when it has gone on too long for their comfort?
So many dogs do not like being patted on the head.
We may have difficulty seeing they are uncomfortable because we are way up there ⬆️sometimes 4-5 feet or more above them, it can be tricky to see the changes in their posture and face....but when we do take notice and appreciate that dogs can consent and even take away that consent, there can be amazing changes.
Some anxious dogs will become LESS anxious.
Some dogs will seek out comfort WHEN they want and need it.
It can give some dogs MORE confidence around people because when someone asks we can say "no thanks, please no pats" or "sure, but not on the head".
If you are in doubt...look at an old video or two, they can be very enlightening.

How would you feel if you were forced to walk barefoot while wearing a fur coat in the middle of a scorching Perth summer day? 🐶

We've received numerous reports since last week's heatwave about pet owners who are taking their dogs out for a walk in the middle of a scorching day. And, with how high the temperature climbed today and how high it'll remain for the rest of the week, we are worried for the dogs of WA. 😟

As the temperature rises, so does the surface temperature on pavements, roads, and sand. Aside from discomfort and pain, dogs can suffer burnt paws from walking on extremely hot surfaces. ❤️‍🩹

If you aren't sure if it's safe, you can protect your hound by checking the ground before the walk; if you can't keep the palm of your hand on the ground comfortably for five seconds, it's too hot to safely walk your dog!

Please, if you need to walk your dog, save it for the early morning hours of the day or after the sun has set in the evening. Keep walks short, ensure that you have plenty of water for your dog to drink, and that you stick to a route with grassy areas and shaded pathways to help protect their paws and keep them cool.

Let's keep our pets safe and comfortable in the summer heat! Help us get the word out! ❤️🐕‍🦺

This is a great one to play in the wonderful air con on a hot day like today!

Some useful information I found shared by a friend. Worth a read🤓

That bite of summer has well and truly come early this year and with that heat, comes snakes.
This article was written by Rob Timmings
Rob runs a medical/nursing education business Teaching nurses, doctors and paramedics. It’s well worth the read

3000 bites are reported annually.
300-500 hospitalisations
2-3 deaths annually.

Average time to death is 12 hours. The urban myth that you are bitten in the yard and die before you can walk from your chook pen back to the house is a load of rubbish.

While not new, the management of snake bite (like a flood/fire evacuation plan or CPR) should be refreshed each season.

Let’s start with a
Basic overview.

There are five genus of snakes that will harm us (seriously)
Browns, Blacks, Adders, Tigers and Taipans.

All snake venom is made up of huge proteins (like egg white). When bitten, a snake injects some venom into the meat of your limb (NOT into your blood).

This venom can not be absorbed into the blood stream from the bite site.

It travels in a fluid transport system in your body called the lymphatic system (not the blood stream).

Now this fluid (lymph) is moved differently to blood.
Your heart pumps blood around, so even when you are lying dead still, your blood still circulates around the body. Lymph fluid is different. It moves around with physical muscle movement like bending your arm, bending knees, wriggling fingers and toes, walking/exercise etc.

Now here is the thing. Lymph fluid becomes blood after these lymph vessels converge to form one of two large vessels (lymphatic trunks)which are connected to veins at the base of the neck.

Back to the snake bite site.
When bitten, the venom has been injected into this lymph fluid (which makes up the bulk of the water in your tissues).

The only way that the venom can get into your blood stream is to be moved from the bite site in the lymphatic vessels. The only way to do this is to physically move the limbs that were bitten.

Stay still!!! Venom can’t move if the victim doesn’t move.
Stay still!!

Remember people are not bitten into their blood stream.

In the 1980s a technique called Pressure immobilisation bandaging was developed to further re**rd venom movement. It completely stops venom /lymph transport toward the blood stream.

A firm roll bandage is applied directly over the bite site (don’t wash the area).

Technique:
Three steps: keep them still
Step 1
Apply a bandage over the bite site, to an area about 10cm above and below the bite.
Step 2:
Then using another elastic roller bandage, apply a firm wrap from Fingers/toes all the way to the armpit/groin.

The bandage needs to be firm, but not so tight that it causes fingers or toes to turn purple or white. About the tension of a sprain bandage.

Step 3:
Splint the limb so the patient can’t walk or bend the limb.

Do nots:
Do not cut, incise or suck the venom.
Do not EVER use a tourniquet
Don’t remove the shirt or pants - just bandage over the top of clothing.
Remember movement (like wriggling out of a shirt or pants) causes venom movement.

DO NOT try to catch, kill or identify the snake!!! This is important.

In hospital we NO LONGER NEED to know the type of snake; it doesn’t change treatment.

5 years ago we would do a test on the bite, blood or urine to identify the snake so the correct anti venom can be used.
BUT NOW...
we don’t do this. Our new Antivenom neutralises the venoms of all the 5 listed snake genus, so it doesn’t matter what snake bit the patient.

Read that again- one injection for all snakes!
Polyvalent is our one shot wonder, stocked in all hospitals, so most hospitals no longer stock specific Antivenins.

Australian snakes tend to have 3 main effects in differing degrees.

Bleeding - internally and bruising.
Muscles paralysed causing difficulty talking, moving & breathing.
Pain
In some snakes severe muscle pain in the limb, and days later the bite site can break down forming a nasty wound.

Allergy to snakes is rarer than winning lotto twice.

Final tips: not all bitten people are envenomated and only those starting to show symptoms above are given antivenom.

Did I mention to stay still.

Keep an eye on those claws, not forgetting the dewclaw further up from the paw!

Keep an eye on those claws, not forgetting the dewclaw further up from the paw!

What's the big deal ❓What have they got to do with my dogs reactivity ❓
Pain 💥
If you can hear "click clack" on a hard surface, your dogs nails cannot go into the surface, so that pressure and force can go back up right into their feet.
The toes can splay because they cannot do anything else BUT become misaligned if their nails/claws are too long.
That affects the foot, that affects the joints and that can affect a dogs behaviour.
Pain affects behaviour and yes....pain can cause reactivity.
Is it just a coincidence that when your dog leaves the soft carpet or lawn of your house and goes outside on the footpath their behaviour changes?
For some dogs, taking this simple step can make a huge difference to their reactive outbursts.
Cutting or grinding the nails can make a big difference.
If you can hear "click clack"...it really is time for the "clip clip".

Over the past three days we have been inundated with heat-related reports, most notably of dogs left in cars at shopping centres.

Dogs regulate their temperature through panting. If the air they are breathing in is hot, they can't regulate their temperature and are at serious risk of heatstroke and/or death.

The temperature in a parked car can quickly climb to double the outside temperature and kill a dog in just six minutes.

If you love your dog, leave them at home when it’s hot. If they suffer from separation anxiety, it’s better to leave them barking in the aircon for 20 minutes than in a locked car. There are no excuses!

If you see a dog in a hot car:
🐾 Identify signs of heatstroke (panting, drooling, agitation, pacing, potential vomiting/diarrhea).
🐾 Note down the vehicle's registration number and location and report it immediately to the RSPCA Cruelty Hotline on 1300 278 358 (1300 CRUELTY) or call WA Police on 131 444.
🐾 If you're at a shopping centre, ask the centre management to page the owner of the vehicle.
🐾 Keep an eye on the dog until help arrives but maintain a suitable distance to ensure you don't agitate them, which could cause further distress, making the dog even hotter.
🐾 Gather as much evidence as possible (vehicle details, time and date, photos of the dog in the vehicle).

It is so sad that we still need to put this message out every summer, but it seems that it's just not sinking in. WA - let's keep our beloved pets safe. 🐶☀️

ALA registered, boutique breeder of Australian Labradoodles in Perth, Western Australia.

All my life I filled my home with rescued animals, then a life changing event brought me the love of a beautiful Labradoodle who rescued me at my time of need. Their unconditional love, loyalty and intuitive intelligence is simply addictive. Breeding ethically and with high standards of testing for genetic health is how the ALA govern the breeders they accept to be registered with them, Moogi will always put genetic health and temperament at the top of the list. All of my fur babies live inside our home, recline in the Lazy Boy, spread out on the couch or snuggle up on our bed, they are everything to us and our puppies will be born and adored daily in the comfort of our home. Please adopt, don’t shop if you can, so many beautiful fur babies are in need of a loving home through no fault of their own but if you just can’t go down that path for whatever reason and need to follow your heart to the love of a Labradoodle please check out our website for more information: moogilabradoodles.com.au (currently a work in progress as I keep getting sidetracked by Doodle cuddles...the struggle is real!) ☺
