Have you updated your pet’s microchip?
When you adopt a pet from a rescue they are usually microchipped under the rescue’s contact details.
If your pet gets handed to a vet (or pound) and they are still registered with the rescue it can take some time to track down the owner. Only an owner can authorise treatment (beyond pain relief), in an emergency a delay could mean the difference between survival or not.
You can always keep the rescue as your second contact if you wish, in case you cannot be contacted but your own details should be recorded as the first contact.

Christmas is coming and we at Romeo’s Rabbit Rescue ask you to please STOP BUYING animals that you are not prepared for or not able to keep for their lifetime.
STOP supporting pet stores and breeders by giving them your money.
It's not fair to expect that a rescue will take in your animal that the PET STORE or breeder refuses to take back.
Rescues are all FULL. We don’t have enough carers for the bunnies and piggies we have in care now, this has been the case for years now. There’s no room for the post-Christmas surrenders.
Pet stores and breeders make a sale- they make a profit off of the PRODUCT they sell to you.
Rescues are not-for-profit and volunteer run with a limited source of income to feed, house and vet all the unwanted pet store and breeder “products”.
If you are looking for a companion animal, please look to a rescue first.
Don't go to a pet store or a breeder, buy an animal and then only consider a rescue in order to get rid of your unwanted animal.
We are always happy to advise you on how to make life easier, happier and better with a bunny or guinea pig you already own- please contact us for a chat without judgement.
STOP BUYING ANIMALS, please- just stop.

☀️Keeping your bunnies and piggies cool in summer ☀️
🔥 Our high summer temps are here and it’s really important to keep bunnies and piggies cool, they aren’t great at regulating their temperature, they don’t sweat and can overheat easily.
If you’re able to leave an air conditioner on for them, that’s ideal- fans can help a little, but because they don’t sweat they don’t get the same effect we do.
🌞 Please keep bunnies and piggies inside on the hottest days, even a bathroom or laundry is preferable to possible heatstroke.
❄️ Cool tips-
Provide multiple bowls, especially if you are going out for the day.
Change water twice a day, keep it fresh and cool so they are more likely to drink plenty.
Provide ice bricks, or frozen water bottles, you can wrap them in a tea towel to stop everything becoming wet.
Mist bunny’s ears with cool water- bunnies lose most of their excess heat through their ears.
Piggies may appreciate a shallow dish of water to dip their paws in.
Offer cold veggies and fruit from the fridge, rinsing with cold water and not shaking the excess off will help keep them hydrated.
Keep bunnies and piggies well-groomed, it is worth considering a shave if they are long-haired or particularly fluffy.
🚑 These are the signs of heat exhaustion, this is now an emergency and you have no time to waste, get your piggy or bunny to a vet straight away-
Fast, shallow breathing
Wetness around the nose
Listlessness
Hot ears
Tossing head back while breathing rapidly from open mouth.

THE GIRRAWHEEN 6 🐰💔
Romeo's was recently contacted by a social worker who'd discovered bunnies at a house in Girrawheen that were in trouble. We couldn't think how they could possibly be worse off, or even how they were still alive when we saw them, but knew we had to act quickly.
Imagine being in a tiny wire cage and not able to hop around, or ever run and play.
No food or water and not knowing when the human that was supposed to care for you would be bringing any, because you'd already gone for days with nothing.
No comfy bedding to lay on, cold at night, no company to stop you being bored and lonely all day, and nothing to play with.
Then imagine just sitting in that tiny space with nothing, and having stickfast fleas biting you because your area was so filthy😭.
We took the 6 bunnies from that horrific situation, and saw how dehydrated and starving their tiny bodies were, one went limp not long after being saved, though has come good now.
We have temporary carers for a week or two, but if anyone could please help us by fostering one of these poor bunnies then please message our page🙏.
They're being treated, and cc fed, and being given lots of hay and healthy foods they've probably never had before.
They're being shown love and kindness, and though they were pulled from their cages by their ears and back legs by the owner before we could stop them😔, they're showing no aggression, and all seem so sweet.
If you have any space indoors at all, laundry is fine, and you live within the Perth metro area (Alkimos to Rockingham) then please help us.

Rescue, Rehabilitation and Re-homing
Founded in 2019, Romeo’s is a foster-based rescue organisation.
Our goal is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home bunnies who’ve come from difficult situations. Our foster carers and volunteers are well experienced and trained in bunny care, and have provided the love and support countless buns need to overcome the injuries, aggression or fear responses that are all too common in neglect situations. All our bunnies are desexed, vaccinated and microchipped before being put up for adoption by the Unusual Pet Vets, and their adoption fee of $185 covers this work and no more.
OUR STORY:
Romeo the bunny was handed into the vets during the year of 2018, with a broken leg that couldn’t be saved and no luck finding his owners. The vets contacted our founder Andrea and asked if she could take Romeo, as she had worked with rescues in the past and had experience with amputee Bunnies. Of course, she said YES!
Andrea originally planed to care for Romeo until he was ready for adoption, helping him learn a new life with three legs. Romeo had other plans, winning the heart of his human so completely that she ended up adopted him herself! Since then, Andrea used her passion for helping bunnies in need to take the helm and make this amazing rescue what it is today. We’ve evolved and grown to become a rescue with over 17 foster carers across perth, a full admin team, and over 40 bunnies adopted out just this year.
Every adoption saves two lives: both the bunny being adopted, and the space it opens up in the rescue for another bun to be saved! To see some of the buns currently looking for homes, check our our petrescue profile or message us today :)
