Pet Safe Halloween
For those who celebrate Halloween, (and really who wouldn’t mind a reason to dress up and eat a bunch of lollies?) there are a few seasonal hazards to be aware of to minimize scary situations for our pets.
• Decorations: Decorating your house and yard for Halloween is a lot of fun, but be mindful that some decorations are not pet safe. In particular, ribbons and string are often tempting to cats, and can cause linear foreign bodies when eaten, requiring emergency surgery to remove them from the intestines. Some dogs will mistake decorations for toys and chew them up or swallow them, and care should be taken when placing electrical wires, as any pet may decide to chew on them.
• Opened Gates: With Trick-or-Treaters coming to your door, there is an increased risk of gates being left open and pets getting onto the road. Be extra mindful of where your pets are on Halloween, consider confining them away from the front door if they tend to dash out, and make sure their microchip details are up to date, just in case there is an escape.
• Artificial Sweeteners: Xylitol is an artificial sweetener which is very toxic to pets. It is commonly found in ‘sugar free’ lollies and chewing gum, and if you think your pet has eaten some it is best to seek veterinary advise ASAP. Consider giving your pets their own treats and not sharing yours with them.
• Human food: With any party season there is plenty of delicious food, but these extra fatty treats will often cause gastroenteritis when fed to our pets.
• Stress: Some pets will be more sensitive to stress, especially with a changed environment and lots of strange people coming to the house. Some pets will benefit from a quiet room they can retreat to, or phenomone diffusers like Feliway and Adaptil. For pets that are very easily distressed, sometimes short term medication is an option that can be discussed with one of our vets.
Being a little mindful can make Halloween safer and less stressful for our furry companions. Happy Halloween!
