Most dogs don’t like to be pet on their head by strangers. Instead, if you want to say hello and you’ve asked their guardian, say hello verbally and allow the dog to choose if they want to be pet. If they come closer for a sniff, leave your hand at your side. Allow them to sniff and initiate a pet, then pet their side behind their shoulders and stop. If they want more, they’ll let you know. Consent is important for dogs, too.

TAKE A HIKE! A walk or a stroll. Our koalas need you- now! This is your chance to be a wildlife hero!

We are getting calls and reports from all angles of baby koalas being separated from their mums.

IF IT IS SAFE, We need you all to get out and go for a walk In your local wildlife areas, bushlands and known koala habitats. We only have a small window of time before those joeys separated from their mums won’t make it and will start to shut down. If you see ANY koala or any other wildlife in a questionable spot, area or compromised position PLEASE CALL IT IN!! A mother of any animal will very unlikely go back for a Joey, especially in these extreme times.

🌳 What to look for?
Joeys will often not move far from where they were dropped or separated. Look at the base of trees for little balls of fluff, often in a ball or fetal position.

👂 What to listen for?
A little Joey will sound like a cross between a baby’s stresses cry and a little grunt/growl (not low like a dog growl- more mid to high pitched

🚨 Racing Queensland is planning a new greyhound racing track in Ipswich. 🚨

The Greater Brisbane Greyhound Centre will cost close to $40 million, and funding is coming from the state government.

This investment in a Greater Brisbane Greyhound Centre will result in:

▪️ stress, injury and the death of many greyhounds

Racing Queensland is seeking a Ministerial Infrastructure Designation (MID) which means the State Government Minister makes the decision. A MID is for the delivery of essential community infrastructure - hospitals, schools and emergency services. A greyhound racing track that imposes huge risks to both animals and people is clearly not an essential community infrastructure.

The world is a sadder place because this guy is no longer in it. Yoshi had been battling health issues for some time and yesterday his body gave up. Yoshi made the world a better place with his big cheeky boxer grin, his energetic love of life and his amazing, loving nature. Thank you so much to Yoshi’s Mum for bringing him into my life.
Please keep Yoshi’s parents in your thoughts over Christmas and be sure to cherish your fur babies over the holidays. I know I’ll be giving Tiger extra cuddles and kisses over the next few days. ❤️

Tip 4 - Bones
Think twice before feeding bones to your pooch this festive season. As an emergency vet, we have seen all sorts of different problems that arise from feeding bones to dogs: broken teeth, mouth injuries, bones stuck in the mouth, bones stuck in the oesophagus, bones stuck in the trachea, bones stuck in the intestines, and then there are the bones that are no longer stuck as they have perforated the intestines and gone into the abdomen.

Bones can cause serious complications if swallowed so if you choose to give your dog bones follow these tips:
🐕 Stick to raw (NO COOKED BONES)
🐕 Ensure it is large enough that your dog cannot fit the whole bone in their mouth
🐕 Always supervise

As the time of year is upon us and we start the festive shopping. The awful pet Christmas line is in all the shops... Please don’t get these for your pets this Christmas, as you can see this is rawhide and it has been artificially dyed red and green and glued into different shapes.

The vast majority of these rawhide products and treats come from China.

Their journey starts with the hides being soaked in a toxic sodium sulphide to remove the hair and fat. More chemicals are used in order to split the hide into layers which is then washed with hydrogen peroxide to give the white "pure" look and remove the rancid smell.

Now comes the pretty festive colours and the glue to form cute shapes.

They regularly cause intestinal blockages and choking. The chews go slippery when wet and are near impossible to get hold of to save a choking dog.

Please be safe this Christmas and pick a much nicer alternative for your pooches♥️

Greyhounds belong in a yard and not a racetrack. This beautiful girl lived the majority of her life in the racing industry before being rescued and then adopted. Milly is living her absolute best life with her parents. Milly is incredibly adored and so incredibly loved. Tonight I took Milly for a jog around the block. I didn’t force her into it and would never but she loved it and stuck with me the entire time. Now she’s cuddled up on her bed snoozing 😍
