AS MOUNT ISA HEATS UP, ENSURE YOUR PETS ARE PROTECTED ☀️ ☀️
Please help spread awareness about keeping pets safe in the summer heat.
Walking your dog:
Walking dogs on hot pavements can lead to severe burns on their paws. Try the barefoot test: if it’s too hot for your own feet, it’s definitely too hot for your dog. Walk dogs early in the morning or late in the evening, and always make sure they have access to fresh, cool water daily. If you see someone walking a dog in the heat of the day, don’t be afraid to speak up and educate them about the risks—they might not appreciate it, but it could save a life.
⚠️ Special Attention for Black Dogs ⚠️
Black dogs are particularly vulnerable as they attract and retain heat, putting them at greater risk of overheating. Ensure they have plenty of shade and shelter to avoid potential organ damage or worse.
Garden Hoses: A Hidden Hazard
Did you know water sitting in a hose exposed to direct sunlight can reach extremely high temperatures. This can cause burns to children and animals if sprayed without first letting it cool. Please remember to let the water run for a while before spraying.
Extra Care for Animals in Sweltering Heat
• Provide SHADE and WATER (in tip-proof containers) for all pets.
• Use heatproof matting and ensure water is available if animals are in the back of utes.
• Avoid walking pets on hot concrete or asphalt—these surfaces get dangerously hot. Test it with your own bare feet if you’re unsure.
• Never leave pets in unattended cars—temperatures can spike within minutes, putting animals in immediate danger.
Let’s all remember: if it’s too hot for us, it’s too hot for them! Please think twice and make smart choices to keep our pets safe in the heat.
