When you're looking for a puppy, most of the time it has been well drilled into you that the parents need to at a minimum be DNA tested, and hip and elbow scored.

Great, your breeder has said they are - now what? First of all, you should always be able to view these results.

⚠️ If your breeder can't or doesn't want to show you, even if the puppies are the cutest things you've ever SEEN, this is a red flag that no testing has been done or the results were not good and you are potentially setting yourself up for a lifetime of vet bills, painful surgeries, ongoing management or even the heartbreak of losing your puppy to a testable and possibly avoidable condition. Ethical breeders know their lines, plan their matings and test their dogs to avoid these issues. Many known genetic issues in Border Collies do not appear in Dogs Australia registered lines for this reason, as the issues have been bred out by breeders who have dedicated their lives to producing the healthiest possible dogs.

However, even if you can view the results, if you have never had to read test results and don't know what you're looking for it's just going to be a bunch of words, letters and numbers! To help you make sense of it all, the Border Collie Club has information available to explain genetic conditions, links to the National Border Collie Council's health information, and pages to guide you through reading and interpreting testing results, including examples of the certificates you should be able to view. The majority of these certificates have a QR code that you are able to scan to confirm their validity.

We are excited to announce the winners of the 2024 Top Dog Awards in each discipline - this is a fun internal competition between members of the Border Collie Club to share their training achievements, results, titles and celebrate the work that goes into building a great relationship between handlers and dogs through showing and trialling.

That’s Border Collie Christmas done and dusted for another year! Thanks to everyone who came and celebrated with us, even a random 5 minute downpour right in the middle couldn’t dampen the dogs’ spirits and we all had a great time in the mini show, trying agility, rally and tricks, and racing down Distraction Alley (or sampling the distractions 😂).

Thanks to Narla's Dogilicious Treats And Gifts helping everyone stock up on goodies for Christmas - wishing everyone a safe and happy break, see you in 2025!

One more sleep until Border Collie Christmas!

Members, come and check in on arrival to enter your name into the door prize raffle (or join on the spot!) - tickets to our regular raffle can also be purchased for $2 each (or 3 for $5).

You can also come to the club tent to put your name down for some fun mini show classes, including our super special Old Dogs Parade - the last class of the Mini Show, bring your beautiful old dogs around the ring as we celebrate how much they mean to us and what they’ve brought to our lives and families.

For those who sadly are no longer with us this Christmas, allow us to quietly honour them by adding their name to a bauble and hanging it on our tree. Baubles and textas available at the club tent.

Don’t forget to visit Narla's Dogilicious Treats And Gifts for lots of yummy treats and Christmas gifts, get your photos taken with Santa in front of our pretty Christmas backdrop, visit the Chill Out zone with clam shells and sniffing games, and enjoy all the activities there are to see and do!

Feel free to bring along chairs, picnic blankets, gazebos, snacks and settle in for an enjoyable night. Dogs on leash at all times unless advised during activities or in designated areas.

Keep them safe this Christmas!

Dangerous foods for dogs.
If you suspect that your pet has eaten any foods which may cause harm, contact your vet immediately for advice, do not wait and see – it only takes a couple of hours for food such as chocolate to be absorbed into the system.
When you call your vet it will be helpful to have the following information to hand
What have they eaten?
How much have they eaten?
When did they eat it?
Their details – breed | approx. weight | age.

Remember - prevention is better than cure – please keep dangers out of reach.

One week until our Border Collie Christmas Fun Night!

We have lots of fun and games planned and can’t wait to see you there - will you be entering our mini show with fun classes like Best Kisser, Waggiest Tail or Most Handsome Boy, or will you have a go at learning some new tricks or a bit of agility?

Maybe you’d like to test your dog’s recall in Distraction Alley, where they are tempted with toys and treats on their way to you! Or does your dog prefer a quieter evening out, dipping their toes in the clam shell and sniffing out some treats hidden underneath various things?

Either way, there’s plenty to see and do including photos with Santa and we look forward to welcoming you. Public welcome, we will have a BBQ and drinks available so bring chairs, picnic blankets or gazebos and set up for a nice evening out with the Border Collie Club 🎄🐾

Summer in Australia is one of the most popular times to bring a new puppy into your family. Annual leave, school is out for a few weeks, plenty of time to settle in at home and spend warm days and nights playing together - not to mention Christmas!

It’s when you’ll see a huge rise in litters posted on places like Gumtree cashing in on demand, and there’s often a rush to get one ‘in time for Christmas’ or maybe even get one ‘cheaper’. This highly corresponds to when we see more potential owners being scammed, and even when scammers start to contact breeders.

We have plenty of information on our website to help you consider what to look for when you are choosing a breeder, choosing a puppy, or even just deciding whether a Border Collie is the right breed for you. But most importantly, what we have that you absolutely will not have access to anywhere else, is a list of Dogs Australia registered pedigree breeders who are members of our club and have agreed to abide by our specific Code of Ethics requiring that for both parents they DNA test for all testable conditions, screen hip and elbow joints via specialist x-ray evaluation, show these results to you, do not breed dogs who are too young or too old, do not breed mothers either too frequently or too much over their lifetime, and will not only microchip, vaccinate and provide information packs and pedigree papers with all their puppies, but also provide ongoing guidance and support to you for the lifetime of your puppy.

To assist you in this process, we also have a dedicated Puppy Enquiries service where you will receive personal advice, support and information to assist you in finding your perfect new companion.
