Please forward nominations for positions at our upcoming AGM to [email protected] no later than 6pm Monday 29th July. This gives us time to release the information to our members to be given due consideration for voting. Financial members from the 2023/24 financial year are eligible to vote however must be in attendance at the AGM to do so.

* Please note that a motion for amendment to the Constitution with regards to increasing the number of General Committee members by 2 (two) has been submitted, and will need to be voted upon and ratified prior to the election. If this motion is not passed the number of General Committee positions available will remain at 5 (five).

Another lovely day getting pats and promoting the breed - it’s a hard life! Thanks to our wonderful club members who have again volunteered their time across the weekend, we’ve had some great conversations with people and are grateful for the opportunity to help people know what to look for when bringing a Border Collie into their family, as well as all the fun days and educational events and opportunities that we can offer to people who join the Border Collie Club of South Australia!

You can come and visit our friendly club stall again at the Adelaide Animal Expo this weekend! We’ll have plenty of dogs to come and cuddle, as well as being able to answer questions about puppies, breeders, dog sports and all things Border Collie!

We are located in the middle of the pavilion right behind Safe Pets Safe Families - who will also have a couple of our four-legged superstar volunteers Flare and Lira swinging past their kissing booth as well on Sunday.

The committee have decided to sell the remaining tickets via old school raffle books.

Our next Puppy Fundamentals Master Class is coming up on Sunday 16th June - with presentations by breed and industry experts on behaviour, training, nutrition, health, grooming and dog sports, it’s a must-do for families looking to or have recently added a with Border Collie puppy to their lives! The whole family including puppies under 12 months are welcome to attend, however you may of course also attend without a dog (and in some cases that makes it easier to take in the information!). Lunch is provided, and attendees also receive a gift bag to take home.

This event is for members of the Border Collie Club - memberships for the remainder of this financial year are currently half price, so if you haven’t already, join the club and book to take advantage of this fantastic opportunity to set yourselves and your puppy up for success! Remember - if you bought your puppy from a breeder who is a member of our club, you are entitled to free membership of BCCSA for the year, so if you aren’t sure, get in touch with your breeder and make sure they’ve signed you up!

4. CONDITIONS FOR THE USE OF THE WORD "NATIONAL" IN THE NAME OF A BREED CLUB'S CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW

4.2.7 In Conformation Classes, only dogs registered on the ANKC Ltd Main Register or the Stud Book Register of a Recognised Overseas Canine Controlling Body can compete at a National Breed fixture. (Amended 02/09) (10/11)

First trial coming up? Here’s some tips from experienced handlers - covering common mistakes they see new people make as well as suggestions for training.

1/ Read the rules! Find out what is expected in your class, which exercises you’ll be doing, what you can lose points for, and what is an absolute no-no (hint: toilet your dogs before you go in!). Train your dogs to do more than what is required in the trial - they will often not perform as well in a trial as they do in training, so set them up to be as successful as possible.

2/ Attend a trial as a spectator or steward to see how it runs. Watching experienced dogs and handlers trial is a great way to see what will happen on the day. Stewarding gives an even closer view of how judges interact with competitors, how the trial and ring is run, and it has the added bonus of helping the club who is running the trial - volunteers are often few and far between!

3/ ‘Bomb proof’ your dog to ignore distractions, and focus. List all the distractions that could happen at a trial, and train your dog to ignore them. Loud speakers, other dogs and people making noise or running around, judges that follow closely behind or around you, clumsy stewards dropping things, cones in the way while heeling, cheering in another ring, bi***es who may be in season.

4/ Reduce treat use in training (it’s not allowed in the ring). Prepare your dog for longer sequences without reinforcement, as you can not bring treats in to trials, and as you progress you will may not be able to speak to or touch your dogs either. While learning a skill, treats and other reinforcement are key - while trialling you are being tested on your dog’s understanding and performance of the skill they have learnt.

5/ Always remember that you are a team - even when nervous! You have worked together all this time to learn the skills, now work together to show them off! You have to do everything that you can (within the rules) to help your dog do well. In some sports this can include stopping an exercise and asking to start that one again, or taking a moment to calm down and remind yourself that the end goal for all of this is to just have fun!

Who’s coming to The Pet Show on the 18th & 19th of May? We think that along with The Wonderdogs performing demonstrations, our ‘Ask The Breeder’ segment and our certified* status as the smartest dogs in the world a rebranding to ‘The Border Collie Show’ would be appropriate, but for now we’ll settle for some visitors through our Border Collie Stall for cuddles with our dogs and a chat with our humans 🐾

The first in our Dog Sports educational series, come and find out about training your dog to be the best possible companion and how this can progress into achieving fantastic things together, including the awarding of titles that are added to your dog's name and stay there forever!

🏆 About Championship Shows 🏆

Dog shows are held all around Australia, where dogs are judged by specialist judges against their breed standard. A breed standard is the guideline which describes the ideal characteristics, temperament, and appearance of a breed and ensures that the breed is fit for function with soundness essential. Breeders and judges should at all times be mindful of features which could be detrimental in any way to the health, welfare or soundness of this breed. Challenge points are only awarded at Championship Shows and are given to the Best Dog (called Challenge Dog) and Best Bitch (Challenge Bitch). One hundred Challenge points are required before a dog can be awarded the title of Australian Champion. This title is retained for life and the initials Ch. become part of the dog’s registered name.
