Happy New Year, especially to those who worked hard to make the world a better place in 2024

We hope the year starts well for you and that it will be a great one, for all the other than human animals and those that help them.

We had some lovely endings to 2024, including with a local budding animal advocate, six year old Cooper coming to us with a Christmas card and $4, he had saved up for the cats. Thank you Copper, who is seen in the photo and hoping to adopt a kitten soon.

Another young local boy this time twelve years old made the last adoption for 2024, when he and his family took Simon home on New Year’s Eve. Lovely for Simon who had such a sad start to life, with his previous family thinking it was better to kill this kitten, than pay for treatment of the absences he had had for a while. Now Simon can learn about love, care and commitment and blossom even more, though he is already a remarkable purry affectionate cat.

Happy New Year Simon and family, as well as all the cats and humans who adopted them from WLPA

Eddie's new life

My name is Catherine and my rescue cat and I decided to foster a cat in need and after searching petrescue Redman, now named Eddie popped up and we both agreed he would be our first ever foster. So 15 months ago I rocked up to WLPA and Anna gave me this handsome boy who was petrified of me and everything else to me to love and cherish, which i did and after 5 weeks he was ours as we officially adopted Eddie and he now had his furever home. Since last Christmas, Eddie has continued to thrive with unconditional love and slow, patient and constant support. He has had many first including, receiving his first collar and tag, having his first high on catnip, his first dental treatment, first sleep over at Nan and Pop's and first ever cuddle where he allowed me to pick him up and snuggle (BEST DAY EVER). Many big steps for my brave boy who continues to amaze me with his resilience and cheekiness. He did steal 2x sausages on his sleepover at Nan and Pops. Hahahaha. His joy at life is wonderful to watch as he gives his everything in stalking and playing with his favourite toy, a stuffed Christmas ornament Nan made him after he kept stealing last year's from the tree.

Please help WLPA continue to support babies like Eddie who were considered unadoptable. Those who are unadoptable need the love, support and care from the community that gave them life but cruelly didn't give them the chance of a happy ending like Eddie's.

Here are a few photos to show the kittens and volunteers having fun on Xmas Day and remind you that we will be open for adoptions all next week including New Years Eve and Day. Then you can ask about young cat Simon and these kittens Fluffy, Tabby and Pudding.

Thank you Chanon for these photos. Kia very kindly bought the Christmas houses for the cats in earlier photos and also took the time, to put them together for us.

Dreaming of a Black Christmas

So that beautiful in every way, black sisters Hope and Haven, can after two months at WLPA, get a home of their own too. They arrived as young kittens with their four other mainly tabby siblings, who were adopted long ago.

In the meantime we are giving them and all the other cats and rabbits here as fun a Christmas as we can.

We wish you and all your little ones a lovely Christmas and end to the year. Special big shout out, to all the WLPA alumni.

This comes with much gratitude from all four and two legged at WLPA for all your support of WLPA and acts of kindness to others

Whether we are naughty or nice, we will all be getting some treats for Christmas at WLPA

This of course can only happen thanks to generous and compassionate people who donate or give of their time to help us.

We hope the world treats you as you do it and that means lots of kindness may flow your direction this festive season. This is a time of year when we have many opportunities to help others and spread happiness and kindness to all, regardless of the number of legs or even lack of legs they traverse the world with.

With thanks for all you have done to help our other than human companions and best wishes for your Christmas from all at WLPA

Do you recognise this family?

They were abandoned starving and filthy at about 5pm today in Gladesville. The police are on their way to finger print the carry case and take other evidence. Neighbors are supplying CCTV footage. Abandonment of an animal is not only an unethical thing to do it is an offence that carries up to a six month prison sentence. Any assistance appreciated.

Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979 No 200
Current version for 21 November 2024 to date
Part 2 Offences
11 Animals not to be abandoned
A person shall not abandon an animal.
Maximum penalty—250 penalty units in the case of a corporation and 50 penalty units or imprisonment for 6 months, or both, in the case of an individual.

These are someone’s companion animals / family members; they are perfectly tame and friendly. And yes strangers i.e. us care more about them than their family members do and are attempting to look after them

Vale Izelda

Izelda was nearly a teenager and had been with WLPA for over a decade. Beautiful to the end. Izelda preferred a life without too much, particularly physical contact with others. About two years ago she started to mellow and this just accelerated, when she was one of the first cats to move to the new premises. She literally jumped and purred with joy here. She also taught us all how much change is possible, as she started to tolerate in doses, the affection others bestowed upon her. Izelda also gave us the privilege of serving and helping her in these last weeks, when she was spoilt to the end. We all appreciated those last times together with Izelda and thank Donna and her vet team for their care of her. Thank you also tiny cat Lucy, who Izelda was seen to groom on her last and peaceful day with us.

We miss you we remember you

Volunteer Profile for the Month Liz

I started volunteering at the WLPA in February 2023 after seeing on Facebook that they needed volunteers. I had been thinking of doing some kind of volunteering for a while but didn’t know what to do and, as a cat lover, when I saw that they needed help at the WLPA, I jumped at the chance and emailed them to offer my services. I work full time during the week so I volunteer one Saturday per fortnight and I love it!

I usually get there at about 9am and I am greeted by lots of eager faces waiting to be fed. I start by feeding the cats, and if I’m not quick enough they like to tell me that I need to hurry up. I then change their water and top up their dry food and collect any empty food dishes which have to be soaked before washing them. It’s then onto cleaning out their litter trays (not a favourite task of mine but it doesn’t take long to complete and I reward myself with a cuddle of a kitten or two.) I then straighten all their bedding and sweep and mop the floors and then it’s time for morning tea. This gives the volunteers an opportunity to sit and chat and catch up on what they’ve been up to.

Then it’s back to work washing dishes, cleaning the cat rooms and individual cages. There’s always an opportunity to spend time with the cats, you get to know their quirky personalities and it’s not too long before you have a couple of favourites.

Usually my volunteer shifts takes maximum 3 hours and it’s such a way for me to start my weekend.
