If you're a lamb exporter, you may be interested to learn about the Export Slaughter Interval (ESI) for NumOcaine.
Interesting news is that as there is no listed ESI for lignocaine, the active chemical in NumOcaine, the domestic Meat Withholding Period is applied instead.
And in the case of lignocaine, that’s 0 days.

We’ve had excellent feedback from farmers who find that a day of lamb marking with Numnuts doesn’t result in the usual aches and pains caused by pliers.
How about this: "Far less strain on the hand and better control of ring release. It is easy and safe to load the rings, needles and Numocaine." (More from this farmer soon!)
That’s great news, as we designed the device with a major focus on ergonomics, particularly the 42 muscles in the farmer’s hand!

NumOcaine and other pain relief for lambs – what’s the difference?
Yes, we keep coming back to this, but it really is important!
Short answer: only NumOcaine is a local anaesthetic that blocks the highest pain levels during the first hour after ring application.

Numnuts across the Tasman:
It’s now 3 years since we took the leap and launched Numnuts in New Zealand.
So how’s it going over there?
Not that long ago, Dougal Deans headed over to Taupō, Waikato on the North Island to see for himself.
Read about how Numnuts is faring under the keen eye of managers at Mangamingi Station, a hill country farm that is part of the Pāmu group of 116 farms throughout New Zealand.

A question we get asked by a lot of lamb exporters is: what’s the Export Slaughter Interval (ESI) for NumOcaine?
An ESI is the time that must elapse between an animal’s last exposure to a chemical and its slaughter for meat export. It’s set by the APVMA.
If no ESI is listed for a chemical, then the domestic Meat Withholding Period is applied instead. In the case of lignocaine, that’s 0 days.
Yes, you read that right: 0 days.

Now is the time when little Numnuts devices go into hibernation across Australia. Yes, with lamb marking complete, it’s time for your device to have a well-deserved rest. Here’s how you can make sure it wakes up refreshed and ready to go next season. Wash: Use hot soapy water or Hibitane to remove grime and clear the moving parts. Spray: Silicon spray will keep everything moving really nicely. A dry silicon PTFE type spray won't pick up dust if the device is dropped. Lubricate: Keep the plunger action smooth and free by applying cooking oil or Vaseline to the o-ring. Replace: Change the fluid junction every season or 2000 doses (whichever is earlier), and needles as regularly as possible for good hygiene. Read how to do it in this article, A Well Oiled Machine. These four maintenance steps will only take a few minutes but believe us, you’ll be thanking the smart bloke who took time to do it next spring!
Some Friday #feedback via test messagefrom Al Hort of Gunns Plains in Tasmania, reviewing his first use of numnuts this years #lambmarking “Did 160 #lambs with #numbnuts. Very easy to use. Little leak from the needle that just needed a nip with the pliers. Offsider was a shearer who reckons it was much easier to use too. Did lambs at 6 to 10 weeks with very little fuss. Only stress/injuries was with me from getting the snot kicked out of me with the big lambs. Cheers. Al”
Just like going to the dentist and having a local #anaesthetic for a filling , #NumOcaine helps relieve the discomfort of #lambmarking.

Numnuts | Targeted Pain Relief for Lambs
Our approach
Creating Numnuts wasn’t straight forward. The effectiveness of powerful local anaesthetics was the obvious starting point. The challenge for the design team was how to integrate local anaesthetics into modern farm husbandry practices in a safe, fast and reliable manner.
This might sound easy, but developing the system took hundreds of prototypes carrying out animal behavioural trials on over 5000 lambs across a 5 year cycle of development, testing and refinement.
All our work has been undertaken using best practice scientific and animal experimentation protocols, resulting in two international patents and a large compendium of animal behaviour data that has been scientifically validated.
Who are we?
We are an internationally renowned team of research vets (Moredun Research Institute & CSIRO) who have combined forces with award-winning product development consultancy 4c Design.
The multi-disciplinary team are all passionate about farming. Our goal is to ensure food and wool security by improving farm animal welfare. As consumers and retailers become more interested in the husbandry of the animals, we recognised the need for an improved marking tool – one that administers pain relief and is easy for the farmer to use.
Our approach was to create a practical on-farm solution, developed and tested by farmers for farmers.
