Did you know that “cat flu” is not one specific infection, but instead refers to the upper respiratory symptoms caused by a few common feline viruses and bacteria? 🦠

As well as cold-like symptoms (such as red, runny eyes and nasal discharge), affected cats may also develop a fever, breathing troubles, or ulcers in the mouth or eyes. 🐾

The good news? Cats can be vaccinated against some of the most common causes of cat flu, thereby lessening their unwellness should they be exposed! 😺

Whilst dental disease is one of the most common causes of pongy breath in pets, our team also considers other potential issues when faced with a particularly smelly canine or feline oral cavity. 🐶🐱

These include:
🦷 Pieces of bone or clumps of fur stuck in between the teeth
🦷 Lumps in the mouth
🦷 Mouth injuries caused by licking a caustic substance or chewing an electrical cord
🦷 Internal health issues such as kidney disease

So, if you notice that your pet’s breath is getting a bit whiffy, it’s best to book them in for a prompt veterinary check-up! 🏥

With daily brushing being the gold standard in canine oral health care, our team would love to pass on a few tips to help make brushing your pet’s teeth more approachable:
1️⃣ Ensure that your pet’s mouth isn’t sore before starting to brush, or else they’ll naturally resist the process – book them in for a dental check-up with our vets if you’re unsure.
2️⃣ Ease your pet into brush-training by starting with some dry medical gauze wrapped over your finger. 🦷🪥
3️⃣ Don’t forget to offer your pet regular tasty bribes throughout! 🍖

For more advice on keeping your pet’s teeth in tip-top shape, chat to our helpful team. And if you have a great photo of your dog flashing their pearly whites, please post it below!

Dr Tam was called into the clinic for an after hours case recently for Lucy, who had sustained some puncture wound injuries. The culprit, an eagle, swooped in and tried to take her away. The attempt was thankfully unsuccessful, and Lucy will make a full recovery.

The first question many owners ask us about dental extractions in their pet is, “Will they still be able to eat properly?”

Firstly, remember that adult dogs have 42 permanent teeth whilst cats have 30, so your pet definitely has a few back-up chompers! 🐾

Secondly, extraction is only recommended for very abnormal or irreparably damaged teeth, which your pet is likely avoiding chewing with anyway. It’s very common for owners to notice their pet actually eating more comfortably after the removal of such teeth! 🦷

Old dogs require old-dog nutrition. 🐶🍽️ Nutritional requirements change as our dogs age. A puppy’s diet should be quite different from an old dog’s, as they have different energy, fibre and nutrient needs.

We strongly recommend feeding older dogs a specifically formulated food that addresses the unique nutritional needs of an older animal. This includes increased fibre, decreased calories, and increased supplementation of fatty acids. If you’re unsure what to feed your dog, contact us for advice. 📞🐾

Don’t take the saying “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” too literally. All dogs should engage in training, exercise, and other environmental enrichment activities throughout their lives to keep their brains healthy and strong. 🐾 Just like humans are told to “use or lose” their brain power, the same concept applies to dogs. Daily walks where dogs can sniff, explore, and socialise, as well as puzzle toys and training, can help keep a dog’s mind sharp as they age and stave off doggy dementia. 🐕‍🦺🧩

Any eye changes in pets should be checked by the vet, as they can be a sign of serious disease.

However, some eye changes are considered normal, so knowing what is a normal eye change and what is not is essential. For example, as dogs get older, they often acquire a blueish, transparent haze to their eyes. 🐕👀 This is called nuclear sclerosis. It affects the lens of the eye and is often associated with reduced vision. As a rule, we always recommend older dogs get checked every six months to ensure changes are age-related and not disease-related. 🩺🐶

Chilli's owners noticed a black spot in her eye. She is a very excited "wriggle worm" but in spite of this Dr Karen could make an assessment and identified a rounded, smooth mass attached to the lower part of her iris (the coloured part of her eye). The most common eye tumour, melanoma has a similar appearance but on this occasion Chilli was diagnosed with a uveal cyst. Photos were sent to a specialist and on his advice we will continue to monitor the cyst with regular vet checks in the future 🫶

Don’t let cats fool you – they can suffer the effects of arthritis, too. 🐱

Cats are masters of hiding disease. When we recognise something isn’t right in our cats, a disease is often quite advanced. So, it pays to look for the subtle signs.

For arthritis, symptoms in cats include decreased movement, such as sleeping more, reluctance to jump up or jump down, and increased grumpiness. 😾 Remember, aging is not a disease, so if your cat’s behaviour has changed recently, make an appointment with one of our vets. 🐾

Let's talk desexing 🐕🐈🐇
With our local animal shelters overflowing with surrended and abandoned pets, desexing to prevent unplanned and unwanted litters is an important consideration.
The age we recommend desexing, for dogs especially, changes with size and breed. We can discuss these considerations along with the health and behavioural benefits of desexing in the context of your household and help you make a decision about the best plan for your pet and family.
Councils give very large registration fee discounts to desexed pets but you need to address this before your pet is 6 months of age.

Introducing the newest member of our team 🎉 Please help us make Lara feel welcome.

"When I moved to the Mid North Coast in September of 2023, Bonny Hills Vet took me on as a work placement student nurse so I could continue my studies. I have completed my Cert IV and am now a fully qualified vet nurse working at both Bonny Hills and Timbertown, where I am excited to gain valuable experience.

I spend my spare time going to the gym, teaching jujitsu, and writing and recording my own songs. I live on a farm with lots animals, including cows, chickens, ducks, goats, horses, and my two cats, Juniper and Geralt, who love to cuddle!"

Did you know that monitoring an older cat’s weight is one simple way of keeping an eye on their general health?
Unexpected weight loss can happen secondary to some health conditions that are more common in older cats, such as chronic kidney disease, an overactive thyroid, or gut disease, and may be one of the first symptoms noted.
We recommend that cats eight years of age and older undergo a full health assessment (including a weigh-in and body condition check) every 6-12 months. Depending on your pet’s recent history, we may also recommend blood and urine tests too.
Do you have an older cat? Post a picture of your distinguished feline below 📸🐱!

Whilst monitoring a dog’s poo is no-one’s favourite pastime, it can be a great simple indicator of a pet’s general health.
A bout of pet diarrhoea is generally not an emergency, but we’d advise a prompt check-up if your pet is also becoming lethargic or weak 🐶💤, or if they are passing blood or losing large volumes of fluid💧. Additionally, it’s also a good idea to have young puppies and kittens or older pets with pre-existing health issues assessed quickly.
When it comes to supporting pet gastrointestinal health, our team can do you a solid!

Did you know that just like us, cats can suffer from high blood pressure, also known as hypertension?
Hypertension in cats often occurs secondary to other health issues, such as kidney disease or an overactive thyroid gland.
Unfortunately, it can have dangerous consequences, potentially causing severe damage to the retinas in the eyes (leading to sudden blindness 🚫👀), as well as the heart and kidneys ❤🐱.
If you have a cat ten years of age or older, ask our vets about proactive organ health and blood pressure monitoring for your pet. Together, we can help keep your cat feline fine!

Acute kidney injury (AKI) involves sudden kidney damage. It can be caused by severe general unwellness (such as inflammation of the pancreas) or issues that directly affect kidney health (including grape toxicity in dogs or lily toxicity in cats 🍇🌺).
Pets with AKI may show changes in their drinking and urination levels, as well as vomiting, lethargy, weakness, or bad breath.
If your pet ever shows similar symptoms, it’s best to have them checked promptly by our kidney-competent veterinarians. AKI can be detected with blood and urine tests and has a much better prognosis if treated early.

A**l glands are normally emptied when your pet defecates. However, in some pets, the a**l glands don’t empty properly and they become impacted. This results in symptoms like licking and scooting from pets. Impacted a**l glands, if left untreated, can become infected and lead to a**l gland abscesses. These abscesses are incredibly painful and often rupture through the skin.

If you suspect your pet has a**l gland issues, visit one of our vets sooner rather than later.

If you suspect your pet might have ingested a foreign body, which is the term used to describe any non-digestible item, you must take them to the vet immediately. 🚑 Common foreign bodies in pets include string or wool, bones, plastic toys, underwear and socks and inedible food items such as corn cobs, peach pips and mango seeds. The longer a foreign body blocks the gastrointestinal system, the sicker your pet will become and the greater the risk of long-term damage.

Don’t delay if you suspect your pet has eaten something they shouldn’t have.

Many human medications are toxic for our pets, with paracetamol being no exception. 🐱💊 While occasionally used in dogs under veterinary instruction, paracetamol must never be given to cats as it causes liver failure and can be fatal.

If you suspect your cat has ingested paracetamol (or Panadol), you must take them to the vet immediately. If caught early, vomiting can be induced to bring the medication up and limit the potential damage.
