Some of you are aware that I was diagnosed with breast cancer mid 2018, and had chemotherapy and radiation as part of my treatment. Pleased to say all is good at the moment with no signs of recurring cancer. When I was having chemo, my head used to get so hot it felt like it would explode sometimes, and the hot flushes that it brought on were challenging to say the least. I wish I thought of it at the time, but I was preoccupied with getting better, the guys who make my dog cooling coats are pretty clever and make a range of cooling products, including cooling caps. The caps have a really soft lining (great for sensitive heads), the pro-cool fabric has special water retaining properties which doesn't drip or feel soggy on your head, but stays cool for hours (6-12ºC cooler than the ambient temperature).
My personal experience with chemotherapy led me to have a batch of these cooling caps made so I can offer to others going through treatment, but they aren't limited to cancer patients. Anyone who suffers from the heat will get relief from them, outdoor workers, sports people, cyclists etc ...

Until we can finally bring in those silent fireworks, nights like New Years Eve will be always be an immense challenge. But my tips below are what you can do to help tonight 👇 💥 🐶

🧨 Find ‘fireworks sound effects’ on Spotify or iTunes and start playing them around the house initially at low volume where they won’t cause any worry.

👅 Provided they’re not showing a stress response (flattened ears, side eye, hiding, shaking) then make them sit and give a treat each time a fireworks sound is played AND they’re calm.

🔊 Slowly increase the volume over the next day rewarding them for keeping calm. If they stress, lower the volume again and don’t reward. For longer term results, try this over multiple days and weeks.

Then, tonight…follow this cracker of a checklist 😴

1. Move them inside so they can’t escape

2. Lower the blinds and start playing music they’re familiar with to block out flashes and sounds

3. Put on a load of washing to generate white noise and some gentle vibrations

4. Give treats containing L-theanine at least an hour before the fireworks. So this is the cool part. Research has found that L-theanine (an extract from green tea) that I specifically added to my Calm + Collected treats results in a ‘highly significant reduction in anxiety’ during fireworks and thunderstorms.

5. Give more treats just like you did in your ‘boom-day prep’ with each sound and play fun games to distract them…

Follow the plan and the whole family will fly through the night with minimal worries. Talk about ticking off New Year’s resolutions. Your dog will have a belly full of treats and you’ll have remarkably clean clothes. It’s a win/win. Who said NYE needed to be stressful?!
