Due to the current Parvovirus outbreak in Ipswich we are now recommending that any animal being admitted to our hospital for elective procedures be up to date with their routine vaccinations. This is in order to best protect our emergency and sick patients who are too young or too compromised to risk being exposed to these preventable viruses.

Getting your pet up to date and protected only requires one visit and helps keep everyone safe. If you are unsure if your pet is up to date please give us a call on 3288 0466 and we can check their file 💉📞

🐾 National Pet Cancer Awareness Month 🐾

Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy are our last line of defence against Cancer in our furry family members, however, the goal in our pets is very different than people.

In humans chemotherapy is used to keep the human alive no matter the cost, no matter the side effects.
In pets the goal is buy you more quality time and if we are lucky remission. This means that if they have undesirable side effects from the medication we change and adjust protocols to make sure they are feeling their best.

Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy protocols are tailored and prescribed exclusively by specialty oncologists and medications can include both IV infusions that require a hospital stay and oral medications that are given at home. If your pet is ever diagnosed with cancer that has the potential for spread a consult with an oncologist is always worth while to better understand your options, and to hopefully get you more time with your furbaby.

We hope you’ve learned a little something about pet cancer over the last month but if you have any questions drop them in the comments below ⬇️

National Pet Cancer Awareness Month 🐾

Surgery is likely the most important tool in our arsenal when faced with cancer in our furry friends. Surgery is used for investigation, diagnosis and even cure depending on the situation.

🔍 Investigation 🔍
Commonly called an Ex-lap (or exploratory laparotomy) we can surgically open up the pets abdomen and can get a eyes on look at all of their internal organs to try and identify abnormalities.

🔬 Diagnosis 🔬
During surgery we can take biopsy samples to send away to specialist laboratories to identify the kind of cancer involved. We can do excisional biopsies (more commonly used in lumps and bumps) where we send the entire cancer away, or incisional biopsy (more commonly used in internal cancers) where we only take a portion to send away. Histopathology is the processing of these samples to tell us exactly what kind of cancer is present, if it is likely to spread, and if we have left any cells behind.

🩹 Cure 🩹
Surgery to cure can be performed easily for external lumps (essentially just our excisional biopsy) but in cases of more involved cancer this can mean amputations, removal of entire organs like the spleen or ovaries, or even partial removal of an organ like the stomach, intestines or bladder!

Removing the original tumor is a big part of dealing with cancer in our pets but in some cases where the cancer is malignant and may have spread, or where surgical removal is not an option, there will still be some mopping up to do. Next week we’ll talk chemotherapy!

National Cancer Awareness Month 🐾

When investigating a lump or a sick animal there are a few different tests that we can use to try and determine if cancer is the cause -

🐶 Fine Needle Aspiration - this needle biopsy allows us to take samples from external lesions, generally while animals are conscious. We can then look at these cells under a microscope in clinic and in some cases get an answer on the day. If the cells are particularly abnormal these slides can also be sent to a pathologist for further interpretation.

🐱 Radiography - X-rays allow us to use contrasting levels of grey to examine internal organs. They are particularly useful for bones and lungs, and can occasionally show us large masses in the abdomen. Typically animals need sedation for X-rays as wencan need them in some pretty unusual positions.

🐶 Ultrasound - Ultrasonography is a pretty specialised skill, and generally requires referral for diagnostic results in subtle cases like stomach or intestinal cancer. Pets typically require a light sedation for this procedure and when done by a specialist sonographer there is the opportunity for biopsy collection via needle.

🐱 Advanced Imaging - CT and MRI are referral only procedures that can help visualise cancers and look for evidence of spread. This procedure is done under general anaesthesia and is key when planning complex surgeries or considering chemotherapy.

Next week we’ll talk about surgery and how it can be part of investigation, diagnosis, and cure 🐾

National Pet Cancer Awareness month 🐾

Dogs and cats can develop just as many different kinds of cancer as humans can, however some are more rare than others.

Before we talk about how we get a diagnosis when there are so many possibilities, here is just a little bit about some of the common forms we see in cats and dogs...

National Pet Cancer Awareness Month 🐾

Did you know that 1 in 3 dogs will develop some form of cancer in their lifetime?

So what can you do at home?
🐾 Routine checks of your pets skin, and getting all new or changing lumps and lesions checked by a vet
🐾 Regular weigh-ins to monitor for unintentional weight loss
🐾 Knowing your pets ‘normal’ - appetite, thirst, breathing patterns, and toileting habits are all things that only you would notice and may give the vet hints when something is wrong.

Each Friday this month we will be talking about the steps involved in treating cancer to help spread awareness - from in clinic diagnosis to referral chemotherapy and all the bits in between.

Gorgeous Benji visited us for his vaccinations last week 💉

According to his paperwork he is a Maltese X and there was some debate in the clinic of what he is crossed with.

To settle the score we've decided to phone-a-friend, so, what do you think he is crossed with? 🤣🐶
