Today is a very special day! It marks 12 months since Mala’s last seizure. This is truly an incredible feat from a little lady who, at one point, was having regular seizures and is a testament to the care and persistence of our vets and the love from her foster mum.

Mala was born without her two front legs and has been in our care since 2019. She is now a perma-squishy which means she will stay in our care and receive any and all treatments and medications she needs for the entirety of her life. She is so loved by her foster mum and loves life with her foster sister Matilda. The last month or two has been spent sprawled the heated blanket and hoping that the others won’t notice and try to share it 🤭🤭🤭 We are keeping our fingers crossed that the next year is also a seizure free one!

What do you call a pile of cats?

A meow-ntain.

Ann, Dean and Ken won't be told what to do, even if it means sleeping upside down or all squished together 🥰😘🤗

24/06/2024

Maude celebrated her special day just the way she wanted—being handfed chicken and making sure that, perma-squishy Munchkin, enjoyed some crumbs too! 🐾🍗

She sends a big thank you to everyone who helped her celebrate her 15th birthday by donating in her honor. Thanks to your generosity, we raised an amazing $1045, which has gone towards covering last week's large vet bills. Your support, no matter the size, doesn't go unnoticed and we are grateful that it allows us to give our perma-squishies the lives they deserve as well as rescuing and rehoming others in need.

Happy Birthday, Maude! 🎂🍰

Hello, loyal subjects!

It is I, your royal queen, Maude, and I’m about to celebrate a very special occasion—my 15th birthday! That’s right, I’m turning the big one-five, and I plan to make this milestone count. As much as I’d love to party all night with catnip and roast chicken, I’ve decided to do something even more pawsome.

I’m reaching out to you with my best ‘pretty please’ face to ask for your help. Instead of birthday gifts, I’m hoping you’ll join me in supporting my forever home, Squishies Rescue. They’ve been my guardians, caretakers, and cuddle-providers for many years, and now, I want to give back to them and help other squishies just like me.

Here’s the deal: to celebrate my 15 fabulous years, I’m asking for donations of $15. That’s just a dollar for every year I’ve been around, brightening the world with my feline charm. Your generous contributions will go directly to helping Squishies continue their amazing work saving and caring for cats like me. Their vet bills in the past fortnight have been over $5000 :/

So, please, dig into your couch cushions, check under the bed, or maybe skip a coffee shop visit this week. Every little bit helps, and it would mean the world to me (and my fellow Squishies residents) if you could pitch in, plus you get a tax receipt for your troubles.

Thank you from the bottom of my purr-filled heart!

With whiskers and love,
Maude

Darby has been in our care nearly two months and like all seniors he has needed special care. After his dental his foster mum noticed that he was a little bit off and not as keen to chow down his food as usual. After a visit to the vet and another set of blood tests (all clear!) we tried a few different strategies to get him on the right track. The last week has been his best one yet and he’s eating much more and being a much brighter version of himself. He’s also now had a couple of treatments to help with his arthritis and it does seem to be paying off as he is up and about to say hello to visitors when they arrive!

Darby will be starting the search for his retirement home in the next couple of weeks.

It is now one week to go until our fluffy ruler’s 15th birthday!

Maude is spending her day lounging in walkways and yelling at her human for snacks. She is lucky to have had love and care in the second half of her life as she deserves. Our volunteers are so grateful that we are able to offer so many squishy animals the care they need, often in critical times in their lives. Like little Lolah who has her whole life ahead of her and the numerous senior cats we’ve been caring for over the last couple of months who have all needed dental care, everyone gets what they need.

Maude’s birthday wish is to help other Squishy animals in need and we are hoping that you’ll make a $15 (tax-deductible) donation in her honour! Make your donation here: www.mycause.com.au/p/347372/maudes-birthday-extravaganza

We are absolutely heartbroken to have to share one final post about our dear little street cat, Bubbles.

As you may remember, Bubbles was found in a gutter, clinging to life by one of our volunteers and rushed to hospital where he was placed on a drip and giving the supportive care he needed. It was discovered that Bubbles was FIV positive and while he was in a bad way, after almost 2 weeks of intensive care from his finder and foster mum, he was starting to rally. Sadly, this didn’t last long and 4 weeks after he was found, his body crashed and he went from ok to almost lifeless in the space of an hour. While we did everything we could to get him to hospital, devastatingly, Bubbles passed in the car on the way. We want to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported Bubbles and our attempts to give him the life he deserved. While it’s certainly not the outcome we wanted for him, he has now been cremated and will stay with his foster mum forever. 💔

Lolah Lollipop is tonight back in her cosy foster home, beginning her recovery from what has been a very big week for a little dog. Her Colopexy went well and we're hoping that's the end of her rear end problems! While it's extremely important that animals have an e-collar post surgery, to prevent them from damaging the incision, we were a bit concerned she might make contact with aliens in that giant cone, so we got her something a bit more comfortable! 🍩

Lolah Lollipop Pupdate!

Poor little Lolah just hasn’t been able to catch a break. After being re-stitched on Wednesday night, she once again pr*****ed on Saturday, resulting in yet another stitch being placed and her remaining in hospital over the long weekend. This evening, Lolah will have the Colopexy procedure we’ve been waiting for, so that hopefully she won’t prolapse again. Please keep her in your thoughts as she goes though yet another procedure at such a young age.

Today may be the King’s birthday, but far more importantly, it’s almost the Queen’s birthday! Queen Maude will turn a very royal 15 on the 22nd and she’s hoping you will all help her celebrate!

Being the selfless monarch she is, Queen Maude is hoping to raise some money for those less fortunate than herself and is inviting you all to donate $15 in honour of her 15 years of fabulousness! Maude knows all too well that so many Squishies aren’t provided with the love and care they deserve. They are often kept in horrendous conditions, as Maude was, prior to her rescue and forced to breed for profit. We don’t think we’ve ever told you Maude’s origin story and while it is truly heartbreaking, we think it’s important that people understand just how poorly people will treat animals for their own gain.

Maude was 6 when she was rescued and was being kept in an outdoor bird cage with her sister and a male. They were left there mostly unattended until the male escaped and was killed. At this point, with no chance of any money-making babies, the sisters were basically left to rot. They were not provided with basic necessities and when rescued were surrounded by rotting food in containers they were incapable of eating from, while they slowly starved. By the time we were made aware of their situation, Maude’s sister had already been given away and subsequently dumped at a pound, but thankfully she was adopted by a wonderful person who treasures her as she should be.

As some of you may know, Maude wasn’t originally slated to be a Perma-Squishy. She was adopted not once, not twice, but 3 times, but would never settle in her new home. Maude had clearly decided she had a job to do and being a Perma-Squishy was her destiny! Over the last 9 years, Maude has seen hundreds of other Squishies through her doors and has mostly been civil to all of them! She rules over HQ with her fluffy paw of justice and we wouldn’t have it any other way!

If you’d like to donate $15 in Maude’s honour you can do so here: www.mycause.com.au/p/347372/maudes-birthday-extravaganza

🐾🐕 Gordito Pupdate 🐕🐾

Gordito has been diligently learning new tricks in his foster home (he can shake with both paws now) as well as enjoying walks down at the park with his foster siblings and trips to the pet shop to pick new toys. Unfortunately he was showing some discomfort in one of his eyes last week so he went to visit our friends at Animal Eye Care who have helped him out with some new medications as there is some scarring from his entropion being untreated for so long.

He isn’t a big fan of the eye drops but for obvious reasons they are very important so his foster dad is doing everything he can to make the experience a good one. His next step will be to visit the specialist to have his Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome assessed to determine if he will need surgery like Baguette and Croissant had earlier in the year!

🚨Despite our careful planning and her foster mum’s diligence, Lolah has pr*****ed again tonight. 😭😢 She’s currently on her way back to CARE for immediate attention. 🏥 If you’re in a position to contribute to Lolah’s medical care you can make a tax deductible donation here: www.squishiesrescue.org.au/donate 🚨

Lolah has had a whirlwind of a week, but this little trooper is fighting through it all! 🌟 After her parasite tests came back negative, we had a specialist appointment lined up for her later this month. However, on Wednesday night, Lolah experienced another prolapse. Her amazing carer rushed her to Centre for Animal Referral & Emergency - CARE, where she stayed overnight and had another stitch placed to keep everything where it belongs.

We are grateful that Lolah was able to stay and see the specialist on Friday morning. She was then discharged with a plan for a CT scan with contrast and a colopexy next week. This surgery will involve stitching her colon to the abdominal wall, allowing fibrous collagen tissue to bind the colon to the wall and prevent future prolapses.

Hi there! My name is Zohan, but you can call me Zo. I'm a playful and sweet young Persian cat, and I'm on the lookout for my forever home. Let me tell you a bit about myself!

I absolutely love playing with toys, especially my favourite spring toy. I like to carry it around in my mouth while meowing so that you know I caught it. Anything on a stick also gets me super excited or I can make my own fun in a tunnel too! When I'm not playing, you'll find me napping on my scratcher or the bed, or hanging out with my feline foster siblings.

In the evenings, I love snuggling up with my foster mum on her heated blanket. It's the best way to end the day, and I promise to be the best snuggle buddy you could ever ask for. I’ll even roll upside down so you can scritch my tummy.

I'm hoping to find a home with another cat who would like to be my friend. I haven't met any dogs yet, but I'm pretty open-minded. If you've got a cat-friendly dog, I'm sure we could get along with a slow introduction. I wouldn’t mind if there were teenagers in my new home but smaller kids are a bit much for me.

I should mention that I've had almost all my teeth removed because of a condition called stomatitis, but don't worry! It's all cleared up now, and it doesn't stop me from eating just like any other cat, I especially love tubey treats. My foster mum tells me how soft I am now that my fur is growing back and because it’s so thick I would love your help with regular grooming, just a quick brush in the morning and a clip twice a year to keep me looking my best.

I'm also a "Doll Face" Persian, which means my facial features are less squished than most Persians. This makes it easier for me to breathe, eat, and groom myself, plus I don't have much eye or nose discharge. I'm one of the healthier Persians around, and I feel really lucky for that.

If you're looking for a playful, affectionate, and snuggly companion, I'm your guy! I'd love to meet you and see if we're a perfect match. Please reach out and let's arrange a meet-and-greet soon. I'm desexed, microchipped, and up to date with my vaccinations and parasite treatments. Right now, I'm staying in Narre Warren South, and I'm hoping to find a loving home somewhere in Victoria.

What’s that Lolah? You love your foster home?!

Lolah has been a little angel for her foster mum and has already begun to work on some basic manners to make sure everyone in the household can live in harmony 🕊️ After advice from her specialist team last week we have sent off some faecal testing as the main cause of prolapse is worm burden, so before we put her through another surgery we want to ensure we’ve crossed every t and dotted every i.

Meanwhile please enjoy some super cute pictures of Lolah loving life and trying to become a sunflower 🌻🌻🌻!

Jumanji (or Munji as we call him!) is a sweet, smoochy 10 and a bit year old gentleman who is looking for a new forever home through no fault of his own.

This fluffy little ray of sunshine is such a calm, well mannered chap, who loves to greet you with an exuberant “Meowdy!” which quickly turns into purring while he laps up as many pats, scritches and rubs as he can get! Looking for a lap cat? Munji is your man, he absolutely loves to lounge in your lap and purr his little heart out while getting tummy rubs and chin scritches.

Munji has a soft, fluffy coat that’s about half grown in and it seems to be a good length for him. We think he would struggle with the maintenance of a full-length coat, even with help and would do best with 2-3 clips per year to reduce the workload for everyone. Munji absolutely adores being brushed, so keeping his coat fluffy and knot free is a breeze!

While this charming, affectionate boy would co-exist with a cat friendly cat who minds their own business, he'd really thrive as an only cat, to get all the love and attention on offer. He might be ok with a small, calm dog that he doesn’t need to interact with, but is certainly not looking for a canine BFF! While in care Jumanji has had a dental with one extraction and is now eating very well.

Munji would make an amazing constant companion for someone who is home more often than not and wants an interactive, affectionate lovebug to dote on! He would be fine with older respectful kids and is looking for an indoor only home.

He’s in excellent health for his age and isn’t showing any signs of stiffening joints, with him being quite agile and jumping and moving freely. Of course he is desexed, microchipped and up to date with vaccinations and parasite treatments. He is in care in Rowville and if you think you're his perfect match then you can apply here: www.squishiesrescue.org.au/animals-for-adoption

What do a lollipop 🍭, a koala 🐨 and a long road trip 🚘 have in common?!

Lolah Lollipop’s previous family contacted us late last week to ask us for help as they were no longer in a financial position to provide her with the care she needed. This sweet girl is only five months old and has suffered from multiple re**al prolapses which are painful and not without their infection risks so we set about making a plan. Despite requiring many hours of driving and a bit of rearranging of weekend plans, less than 72 hours after we were contacted, Lolah Lollipop had changed time zones and arrived at CARE for treatment.

But the journey had an unexpected twist. While traversing one of the many country roads our road-tripping superstar volunteers encountered a very lost looking koala on the side of the road. Once they did a u-turn to take a second look they saw that he had blood in his nose, indicating that something was not quite right. Thanks to the advice and support of Wildlife Victoria he was able to be safely contained and taken to meet a koala trained carer who could get him the care he needed, although not without giving his helpers a piece of his mind.

Once little miss Lolah was collected, it became clear that she wouldn’t get to settle into her foster home right away as her most recent prolapse was quite serious. Instead her new foster mum met her transporters at the Centre for Animal Referral & Emergency - CARE to get their expert opinion and help. Last night Lolah had her third purse-string stitch procedure as a first step in getting her healthy. This is where the vet reduces the pr*****ed tissue back to where it should go, before placing a purse string suture to reduce the recurrence of prolapse. Lolah was a star throughout the procedure and she was able to be discharged today and has begun to settle into her new foster home who are adjusting to having young puppy energy for the first time in a little while.

This week Lolah will revisit the surgical team to discuss the treatment plan which will likely include at least one more surgery to stop this from reoccurring. We’ll be sure to keep you updated on this little lady’s progress and we hope that it will be good news very soon.

🥝🥝🥝🥝🥝🥝🥝

Kiwi is a sweet, soft, chonk-headed angel who’s looking for a quiet, loving home where he will get all the pats and tummy rubs he could ever want. Kiwi is such a gentle, unassuming boy, who takes a little bit of time to warm up to new people, but once he does, he’s all about pats please!

Kiwi is an exceptional housemate, he’s neat and clean and not overly rambunctious. As well as receiving the love, Kiwi also like to dish it out, taking any opportunity to give your hand or fingers a lick to show you he cares!

While Kiwi would be fine with an existing cat friendly cat who keeps to themselves, he’s not looking for a sparring partner or a snuggle buddy, he’s happy doing his own thing and would very happily have a home all to himself. We think he would be ok with a calm, older dog as long as he wasn’t forced to interact. This quiet soul is looking for an equally quiet, mature home without kids or lots of noisy activities, to distract him from his window naps and Netflix marathons.

Kiwi’s eyes need a wipe once or twice a day which he’s happy to have done and he occasionally needs some crusties brushed out of his cheeks. He also needs a daily brush to keep his soft coat nice and plush. While in care, Kiwi has had a dental scale and polish with one extraction, so his teeth are now in tip top shape and he’s a healthy, happy boy, ready to find his perfect forever home.

Kiwi is, of course, desexed, microchipped and up to date with parasite treatments. He is in care in Rowville and accepting applications from Victorian homes. If you think you're his purrfect match then you can apply here: www.squishiesrescue.org.au/animals-for-adoption

Another cat has joined the Senior Squishy Squad 🦸🦸🦸

Jumanji’s family made the difficult decision for him to join us to ensure he was able to have all his needs met. He heard about Darby’s appointment and also asked for ‘the works’ so yesterday he went to the vet for a dental, urine analysis and bloods to make sure he’s in tiptop shape before looking for his forever home. Although he’s an older bloke, at 10 years old, he definitely enjoys the finer things in life! So far he has shown what a massive smooch he is and loves pushing his face against his foster mum and climbing into her lap. We are enjoying getting to know this sweetheart and are starting his weight gain journey with some excellent quality food!

Kiwi is the newest member of a rapidly growing group, the Senior Squishy Squad! This eight year old boy joined us this week as his home environment just wasn’t a good fit for such a smoochy but quiet boy. We got him straight in for a dental to take care of some built up plaque and a pesky loose tooth 🪥. He’s definitely feeling more like himself now and has started to show what a sweet and loving cat he is.

Kiwi will begin looking for his forever home very soon so please keep your eyes peeled 👀👀👀

10/05/2024

Hi, I'm Theo and nothing makes me purr more than a snuggle in bed with a human! I am on the hunt for my forever family who is waiting for me to be their hot water bottle.

My foster parents say that I have been the best behaved, most gentlemanly guest with them. I'm pretty chilled out and super gentle, not even too bothered by my foster brother and sister cats initially growling at me. Although I'm much bigger than them, they've quickly realised that I'm not a threat and we even play chasey at night time now. My human foster brothers and sisters think I'm pretty cute too like a fluffy bear cub. I have tolerated the 2 year old boy's hugs and have really enjoyed sleeping with the 6 year old girl on her bed! They sometimes play with me with some cat toys and I love it.

I've recently had a vet check, a dental clean with some extractions and the doctor thinks I'm in pretty good nick for a 10 year young cat! I really look forward to my meals and will flash you the cutest, widest yellow eyes I can muster up. I'm not even too fussy either and will eat both wet and dry food.

I am a Persian cat so I will require regular brushing and grooming, in the past the humans have taken me for haircuts and this has really helped me because my hair just gets way too long to cope with. I tolerate brushing while waiting for my dinner, but a bribe with some tubey treats always goes down well - yum!

We are looking for a home where Theo will be a valued member of his family as he has been in the past. He especially likes to be able to sleep on the bed and get lots of cuddles. Theo is desexed, microchipped and up to date with vaccinations and parasite treatments. He is in care in Lower Plenty and is accepting applications from Victorian homes.

Apply for Theo here: www.squishiesrescue.org.au/animals-for-adoption

Darby went to visit The Kitten Clinic last week and he had what we call ‘the works’. His mouth is now sans two wobbly teeth and the rest are shiny and plaque free which has made it much easier for him to eat and groom himself without pain. Thankfully his bloods and urinalysis came back clear which is just what we wanted to hear. Being an older gentleman it is not surprising that he’s got some arthritis in his joints so later this week he’ll be starting on some treatment and soon enough it will be time to find him a retirement home who would like a quiet, smoochy companion to spoil.

In the meantime he is having a great time with his foster mum and making sure that she doesn’t work too hard by taking her chair at every opportunity 💖🥰😍

Describing how awesome Zohan is a challenge, but we'll give it our best shot!

Since settling into his foster home, Zohan's loving and playful personality has only grown brighter by the day. Like many young cats, he's absolutely smitten with toys, often seen carrying them around in his mouth and proudly trilling to announce his latest "catch" before diving back into play. He's also a bit of a prankster, enjoying a game of hide-and-seek in his tunnel, waiting to surprise the other cats as they pass by.

But Zohan's not just a mischief-maker; he's also a master snuggler. He's discovered the joys of comfy beds, cat scratcher hammocks and warm laps, and he's totally hooked on his foster mum's heated blanket – who can blame him? He also likes it when new people come to visit to give him even more attention and playtime. You only have to look at him and he will start purring as loud as possible. He loves to be patted and get scritched behind his ears. He will flop onto his side or smooch your phone, hand or head to ensure you are giving him enough pats.

As affectionate as this little guy is, he does not like being held so he will need a home with humans old enough to understand that he doesn’t want to be carried around like a toy. Zohan absolutely loves his feline foster siblings and will need a home with another active and playful cat to keep him company. He’s not met dogs while in our care but he would likely be fine with a proven cat-friendly doggo with a slow introduction.

When he arrived, Zohan was suffering from a severe case of Stomatitis which led us to the decision to remove all of his teeth, except for his canines. This has made a huge difference to his quality of life and now he is pain free and won’t need any ongoing care for this condition. He is still able to eat wet and dry food easily so is in all other ways a ‘normal’ cat. Zohan’s coat is high maintenance and he had to be clipped on arrival due to severe matting. Once his coat grows back he will need daily (at minimum) brushing to ensure that he isn’t put in that painful position again. We would recommend keeping his coat short with regular grooming to reduce the workload on him.

Zohan is of course, desexed, microchipped and up to date with his vaccinations and parasite treatments. He is in care in Narre Warren South and looking for a home within Victoria. You can apply for Zohan here: www.squishiesrescue.org.au/animals-for-adoption
