Highlights from an article written in the Pet Food Industry news recently. Yes, this article quotes the founder of a company with a vested interest in insect protein, yet it also highlights some of the incredible benefits of insect protein in dog food.

The article also makes the point that although millions of people across the globe eat insects (deliberately and incidentally), some people are squeamish about the idea but dogs aren’t. It’s just meat to them.

A more sustainable and nutrient dense meat. Even if you’re squeamish, it’s worth the conversation.

We can learn a lot from nature and how animals engage with it. Sometimes animals are the role models humans need. Many animals get great protein from insects, and so can our pets. They’re part of an incredible circular system where much needed resources are turned into more resources. Try it. I dare you 😉
Share this! It’s totally worth it.

Is all protein created equal?
Not exactly. Some is more digestible for dogs than others. Insect protein, for instance, is highly digestible and unlike other meat proteins, is better for the planet.
This surprised many of the fine folk we met . They loved the idea of nourishing their dog while reducing their impact on the planet.

Thanks for the visit, Agnes!

You’ll have the coolest dog in the dog park with air-dried insect protein!
Air-drying retains the natural flavours and nutrients of the protein, providing delectable and nutritionally rich food that will have your dog eagerly wagging its tail at mealtime or snack time. Additionally, the gentle air-drying process ensures a longer shelf life without the need for artificial preservatives, giving you peace of mind while supporting your dog's health and vitality.

We’ve made it to TikTok!

One 5 kg bag of Feed For Thought dog food is made up of approximately 1.5kg of insects. In terms of water usage, insects require barley more than the water that exists in the food they eat.
By comparison, 1.5kg of beef requires approximately 15 000 litres of water.

AND, it’s got legit ingredients that are actually good for you dog.

We are all about your dogs feeling GOOD. Feed For Thought does that! When Dr. Heidi and I started discussing an insect protein food for dogs, we knew that insects were a good protein source, but when we started digging into it we got excited about the minerals and vitamins and fibre. They really are a superfood. The other thing we discovered was that the fibre from the exoskeleton feeds the good bacteria in the dog’s gut. Win for the dogs, and the planet!

Not all heroes wear capes. My Malinois (the non-cape wearing one) chooses to be less agile, but more of an environmental hero (he eats a nutrient dense and sustainable source of protein). He feels good about that. I do too!

There are several benefits of giving your dog a highly digestible diet.

✅ They can absorb the nutrients

✅They can turn the food into energy

✅It prevents digestive problems such as constipation, diarrhoea and vomiting

✅The nutrients are absorbed without turning into excess calories

2021 and 2022 studies* show the digestibility of hermetia illucens (the insect protein in Feed For Thought) vs chicken meal. Insects came out on top! Remember point three - that means good poops! Good food, good results for your dog and the planet.

Every choice and every fraction of a degree of avoided warming matters. The right choices will be measured in lives, livelihoods, species and ecosystems saved. The benefits of stronger action will be realised well within our lifetimes, and even more so for our children and grandchildren.

Change can start in the home. It already has! Do you know take reusable bags to do your grocery shopping? Have you said ‘no’ to plastic straws? Have you heard of some great Australian initiatives like and bags? Feed For Thought is the next step. Read about it on our website.

Can my dog see colour?

Yes, dogs are able to see some colors, but their color vision is not as extensive as human color vision.

Research suggests that dogs have dichromatic vision, which means they have two types of color-sensitive cells (cones) in their eyes, compared to the three types of cones in human eyes. The two types of cones in dogs are sensitive to blue 💙and yellow-green 💛colors, while they have limited sensitivity to other colors such as red and green.
This means that dogs are not able to distinguish between certain colors, particularly those in the red-green ❤️💚spectrum. For example, a red ball may appear brown or gray to a dog. However, they are able to distinguish between blue and yellow colors, and may be able to see some shades of violet and green as well.

Overall, while dogs do have some degree of color vision, it is not as detailed or nuanced as human color vision. They rely more on their sense of smell and hearing to navigate and interact with the world around them.

Thanks Dr. Heidi for the explanation!

As your pooch frolicks in the park in the late summer sun, take the time to check their paws for grass seeds.

At this time of the year, the grass seeds are more commonly loose as the avid gardeners among us take pride in their curb appeal, and our local councils work hard to tame the grass jungles at our parks.

The grass seeds can find their way into the paws of our pooches and cause pain if not removed. If you notice one in there and you can't get it out, head to your vet for some help!
