Hi Klever Kanine Dog Obedience School people, Just a reminder that we will make a decision on whether there will be training or not by 8.30am of the morning of training. We call training off if the weather conditions are too wet or dangerous for us to attend. Regards Pip and Luke.

LEFT ABOUT TURN This is a little harder to get everything right, so here goes. As you are walking, place your right foot forward and pivot left 180 degrees towards your dog. At the same time pass your lead behind your back from your right hand to your left, so that your dog will pass behind you. Then move forward at the same time as you place your lead in your right hand again. I suggest you do this with an imaginary dog and practice this until it becomes automatic. Then teach it to your dog.
Right About Turn As you are walking with your dog, place your left foot forward and then pivot 180 degrees to the right and proceed in the opposite direction. At the same time, your lead will be in your right hand and a treat in your left. You can encourage your dog to flow with you by also using the 'here to me' verbal we talked about in an earlier video, the treat or patting your left leg.
Left Turns. As you're walking along your instructor will say 'left turn'. Place your left leg forward and pivot left 90 degrees on your left foot. Bring your right leg around without knocking your dog with it and continue walking. Use your lead to hold the dog back if you have to, or once again lead it with treats.
Right turns. As you are walking along in a straight line your instructor will say right turn. Take an extra step on two. Place your right foot forward and pivot 90 degrees to the right on it. Then lead off with your left. Encourage your dog to follow in the heel position using treats, patting your left leg or saying 'here to me'.
About Turn This exercise helps get your dog to pay attention to you when you are walking and helps to get your dog to come to you when called. It also helps solidify the heel position. While walking, call your dogs name, pause then say "here to me". Now turn 180 degrees and walk the other way. Have a high powered treat in your left hand near your thigh to encourage them to follow you. If they don't follow they will run out of lead and have to come.
Footwork Your first movement should be your left leg. You will see this in the video. If you are always consistent with this your dog will learn that this movement is a signal to move. When you stop the last movement is your left leg as well. Your dog will take this as a signal to sit unless you use a hand signal for drop or stand. Watch my leg signals carefully and how my dog reacts.
Drop Yesterday I showed you how to teach the drop. This video shows what it should look like when you have trained it.
Drop Once again make sure your dog is walking right next to your left leg when you start this. While walking with treats in you right hand, pass your hand firmly down in front of your dogs face toward the ground, but drag it slightly forward to encourage your dog to follow it down. Its meant to be a chopping motion. At the same time say drop in a firm voice. Your leg position is important. You say drop as your right leg is forward and then bring your left to a stop next to your right. Try to stand up when your dog is down.
Sit. Say the word Sit firmly, as you place your right foot forward and then bring your left foot up to it. At the same time with a high power treat (chicken, Fritz, cheese) in your left hand, slide this over your dogs head from front to back and then treat the dog when it sits. This will encourage your dog to sit quickly and correctly next to your left side. Make sure your dog is next to you when you do this exercise.
I was asked last night at Belair Club about our signals that we use to show our dogs what we want them to do. I said to the people concerned that I would go through them all on this page. I have made short videos of each and will explain them individually. I hope the videos work. Heel. With your dog sitting on your left side the signal is your left arm swing between your dog and your left side from back to front. Your left foot is the first to move. Say heel in a pleasant voice. Do all of this at the same time.
