🎄 Merry Christmas from the Main Ridge Veterinary Clinic team! 🎅✨

To all our wonderful clients (and the fabulous fur, feathered, and occasionally hooved troublemakers you share your homes with) — thank you for another year of laughs, chaos, cuddles, and creative reasons to visit the vet.

This Christmas, may your pets:
🐾 Avoid knocking over the tree (we believe in you… kind of)
🎁 Leave at least some wrapping paper intact
🍗 Not steal the Christmas lunch (looking at you, Labradors)
✨ And keep their festive zoomies to a safe speed

We hope your holidays are full of joy, relaxation, and as little pet-related mischief as possible… though we all know that’s wishful thinking!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year from all of us at Main Ridge Veterinary Clinic!
Stay safe, enjoy the season, and give your pets an extra cuddle from us. ❤️🐶🐱🐴🐮🐰

🎄🐾 What My Pet Wants for Christmas… (according to them 😉)

Ever wondered what’s on your furry friend’s Christmas wish list this year?
Here are a few very accurate guesses:

🐶 Dogs:
• 47 tennis balls (all at once)
• Snacks… just snacks… ANY snacks
• Permission to dig a hole “for Christmas reasons”
• Their human to never, ever close the bathroom door again

🐱 Cats:
• A box. Any box. Bigger box = better Christmas
• Treats served on time, peasants
• A new scratching post (but they’ll still use the couch)
• For the dog to calm down

🐰 Rabbits:
• Unlimited parsley
• Chew toys that mysteriously disappear under furniture
• A tunnel system that rivals a subway network

🐴 Horses:
• Extra carrots
• A new rug they promise not to destroy (lies)
• More pats, less vet visits 😅

Pop your pet’s Christmas wish in the comments — the sillier the better! 🎁✨
We can’t wait to see what your furry (or fluffy!) family members are dreaming of this year!

✨ Happy Retirement, Dr Tim White! ✨

Today we celebrate Dr Tim White, who is hanging up the vet kit after an extraordinary 43 years of caring for the Mornington Peninsula’s horses, farm animals, and the people who rely on them.

Originally from Queensland’s Western Darling Downs, Tim brought his wheat-and-cattle-farm toughness to the Peninsula in 1983—and he’s been a cornerstone of large animal and equine veterinary work here ever since. Known for his exceptional skill, tireless pursuit of knowledge, and a level of bravery that only those who’ve stood behind a kicking horse in a muddy paddock can truly understand, Tim has delivered decades of specialised care in ophthalmology, lameness, and everything in between.

Alongside his veterinary career, Tim also carved out success as a thoroughbred trainer, with wins including the Group One victory of Bulta and a string of other city winners. These days he’s traded the racetrack for providing a well-earned retirement home to Manna Miss.

Outside of work, Tim’s determination doesn’t slow down—whether he’s training for triathlons, out fishing, or somewhere underwater with a dive tank. And while he’d roll his eyes at any fuss, we will genuinely miss his dry humour, steady judgement, and reliable presence on the team.

Please join us in congratulating Dr Tim on an exceptional career and wishing him plenty of adventure, rest, and maybe even a few less 5am starts in retirement.

Thank you, Dr Tim, for 43 remarkable years. Your legacy will always be part of our clinic.

🦇🎄 Can you spare $10 to help our flying foxes?
We’d like to help raise funds with Fly By Night for volunteers caring for orphaned Grey-Headed Flying Foxes who are doing it incredibly tough right now.

There’s a raffle with some amazing prizes including:
✨ Sunset Cinema at Abbotsford Convent
✨ An illustration by Minna Leunig
✨ Entry to Collingwood Children’s Farm
✨ Gorgeous children’s books

Sadly, the bats are facing severe heat stress and starvation, with recent deaths and ongoing food shortages. They urgently need access to fruit trees and care — and they’re essential pollinators for our food system.

💸 $10 = raffle entry
🎟️ The amount you donate = the number of tickets you receive
❤️ 100% of donations go directly to food and equipment for the bats

Please share with friends, family, or colleagues — let’s make a little Christmas miracle. The best gift is a donation 🎄🦇❤️‍🩹

🐪✨ What Was Under the Microscope?

If you guessed alpaca red blood cells, you’ve absolutely nailed it! 🙌🐾

Alpaca RBCs have a unique oval or elliptical shape, unlike the classic round red cells seen in most domestic species. This distinctive shape helps camelids cope with their natural high-altitude environments by improving oxygen transport. Pretty amazing, right?

A fluffy face with fascinating biology — alpacas never disappoint.
Thanks for playing along! More microscope mysteries coming soon 🔬💙

🔍 Guess What’s Under the Microscope!

We’re starting this new series with a tricky one…

Not only do you need to guess what type of cell you’re looking at —
you also need to guess what species it came from. 👀

Clues:
• This species is fluffy, dramatic, and suspicious of everyone
• These cells look noticeably different from most other domestic animals
• They belong to a creature known for spitting when offended (which is often)

🎄🐾 Christmas is Coming — Is Your Pet Prepared?

The festive season is nearly here! ✨ While we all get caught up in the celebrations, it’s a good time to make sure your pets are ready too.

✅ Check your medications – Make sure you have enough for the holidays so your furry, feathery, or hoofed friends don’t run out.
✅ Plan non-emergency appointments – Vaccinations, routine check-ups, and minor procedures are best done before the public holidays.
✅ Stock up on supplies – Food, bedding, and any supplements should be ready so your pets don’t miss a thing.

Getting organised now helps everyone enjoy a stress-free Christmas — and keeps your pets happy, healthy, and safe. 🎅🐶🐱🐴

🐑 Meet Giggles (yes… that really is his name 😍) 🐑

This ridiculously adorable 6-month-old lamb came in to see us after having urinary issues pretty much since day one. Poor Giggles has been leaking urine since birth, and over the last few days he decided enough was enough — cue pain, straining and a very unhappy little lamb.

We gave Giggles the full VIP work-up ✨
📸 Ultrasound and X-rays showed a very full bladder
🧪 A contrast study confirmed his plumbing is perfectly normal
🦠 A urine sample revealed the real troublemaker… a urinary tract infection!

Our top suspect is something called detrusor muscle atony, which basically means Giggles’ bladder is a bit lazy and doesn’t squeeze like it should. This makes it hard for him to empty properly and leaves him prone to infections (rude).

The plan? 💪
We’re treating his UTI and working on a clever long-term strategy to help him empty his bladder and keep those pesky infections away.

Despite everything, Giggles has been an absolute angel — full of charm, cuddles and personality. We’re all a little bit in love and rooting hard for this sweet boy 🥹🐑💕

🐑 Guess the Species — Results!

If you guessed sheep, you’re spot on! 🐑✨
This skull X-ray belongs to one of our woolly troublemakers.

Sheep skulls are surprisingly distinctive on X-ray, with their long nasal passages and strong dental arcade designed perfectly for grazing. They may look cute and fluffy on the outside, but their anatomy shows just how tough and hardy these animals really are.

Thanks for playing along — more “Guess the Species” coming soon!

🐴✨ Equine Hoof Balance X-Rays Now Available — On Farm or At Our Barn!

Did you know that subtle changes in hoof balance can make a huge difference to your horse’s comfort, performance, and long-term soundness?

We’re now offering hoof balancing X-rays that can be taken right here at our barn or on your farm.
These images give a precise look at what’s happening inside the hoof—helping us and your farrier make the best decisions for your horse.

👣 Want your farrier involved? Absolutely!
We can:
✔️ Arrange for your farrier to be present for before-and-after images
✔️ Send your farrier the X-rays for trimming and shoeing guidance
✔️ Work as a team to create the best outcome for your horse

Hoof balancing radiographs are especially helpful for:
• Horses with lameness or foot soreness
• Performance horses needing fine-tuning
• Young horses developing their long-term hoof shape
• Horses with “mystery” gait issues
• Corrective shoeing or rehabilitation cases

If you’d like to book a session or discuss whether hoof balancing X-rays could help your horse, give our team a call!

Your horse’s comfort starts from the ground up. 💙🐴
