We recommend all cats are kept indoors to reduce the risk of being in contact with infected cats.

Winter Blues
Keeping your pet happy over winter.

Even our pets can feel the cold over winter time, with less daylight hours and the temperature dropping, every pet responds differently. Whilst some of our pets rejoice in the colder months; being able to roll in the mud and rain, many especially the oldies feel the cold and need some extra help.

There are a number of things we can do to help to keep our four-legged friends comfortable.

Check Ups
Especially for our older patients, it is common in winter to find our pets are slowing down and are no longer as comfortable doing things like climbing the stairs or jumping in the car. This could be a sign of osteoarthritis; regular check-ups can allow our vets to assess your pets range of movement. If any problems are found the vet will be able to recommend the most effective support for your pet.

Keeping Active
Whilst it is easy to stay indoors where it is warm and cosy, it is worth putting on your boots and a few extra layers to take your dog out for a walk. Keeping active helps with joint health and mobility as well as maintaining muscle mass. Regular light exercise can also help prevent our older arthritic pets from seizing up and getting stiff.

Keeping Warm
Shorthaired pets and some elderly pets may begin to feel the cold more and need some help to keep warm. Some dogs will tolerate a coat or rug, but even an extra blanket or bedding can make a difference, especially for our older pets. A raised bed is also great for avoiding the cold hard floors. For outdoor animals, ensuring they have an insulated shelter that allows them to keep out of the elements.

Most importantly enjoy an extra cuddle or two on the couch when the weather is miserable.

Easter Hazards

Easter for many means friends, family, chocolate and hot cross buns. However the fun of Easter also provides a potentially dangerous time for our pets.

The most common Easter hazards include:

Chocolate
Many chocolates contain theobromine and caffeine, two things that are toxic to our pets. Symptoms of toxicity includes; vomiting, diarrhoea and tremors.

Hot Cross Buns:
Another easter favourite that doesn't go well for our beloved dogs is the hot cross bun. Sultanas, grapes and raisins can cause renal failure in dogs. The toxic dose of grapes is varied and research has shown for some dogs even one grape can pose as dangerous.

Easter Lilies:
For cats it is essential to be aware of Easter lilies as it is one of (along with many other lily varieties) the most toxic flowers to have around cats. All of the flower is toxic and if ingested can cause renal failure. Cats only need to have a very small amount for them to be toxic.

If you see your pet ingesting or any evidence that they may have got into any of the above, it is best to not wait until symptoms begin show. Call the clinic on (03) 5989 6232, or if after-hours contact AEC Frankston or Peninsula Vet Care for 24/7 emergency care.

Book a free Dental Health Check for your dog or cat with one of our nurses in August!!!

We recommend 6-12 monthly dental health checks at our practice. Our veterinary nurses are fully qualified in dental health and prevention. They can walk you through any dental concerns you may have, perform a preliminary dental check, book your pet in for a full dental examination and procedure by one of our veterinarians where required or develop a plan to help prevent dental disease.

These FREE veterinary nurse dental checks are extremely valuable and offered to you to help prevent more serious diseases such as kidney and heart problems that can occur in your pet if dental disease is left untreated.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Our nurses can:

Provide advice and demonstrate the best way to keep your pet’s teeth clean
Advice on toothbrushes, toothpaste, brushing techniques, dental chews, and more.

Identify any early dental problems such as retained baby teeth or extra teeth, infection, which will save you money in the long run if treated promptly
Notify the veterinarians of any concerns who can then begin appropriate treatment

Lice
DESCRIPTION
Lice are a fairly common problem of backyard chickens. Left untreated can result in severe irritation and poor health.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Lice are approximately 1-3mm in length, yellow and flat parasites. They are commonly found around the vent, breast, thigh and under the wings. Lice are difficult to manage as they can live several months on the host and off the host for around a week.

Infestations are common in Autumn and Winter where the transfer occurs from direct contact.

Common signs of external parasites in chickens:

Depression
Anemia
Itchiness
Restlessness
Reduced egg production
Weight loss
Ruffled feathers
Avoidance of hen house
MANAGEMENT
Management of lice:

Pyrethrum-based louse powders can be used every 4 days for 2 weeks
Manual removal of the eggs and repeated treatments are important as chemicals have no effect on the eggs
Good quality pellet balanced in vitamins, minerals, and proteins
Avoid overcrowding and stress
Allow birds to access dust baths
Cleaning of the coop weekly
PREVENTION
Chickens are generally quite effective in keeping lice off their bodies through dustbathing and grooming. They need to do this daily to prevent an infestation. Birds with beak deformities, injured birds or sick birds are unable to keep themselves clean and are more prone to lice infestations.

Lice are often introduced from the outside environment via contaminated chickens, people, crates, coops or egg flats.

Tips to help prevent lice:

Regularly clean the environment particularly of f***l material
Minimizing stress
A good-quality diet balanced in vitamins, minerals, and proteins
Good ventilation
Avoid cold draughts
Dry, clean litter
Appropriate stocking density to prevent overcrowding
Complete removal of litter between flocks
Avoid contact with wild birds or their wastes
Control winged insects such as mosquitoes
Quarantine sick birds
Quarantine new birds for at least 4-6 weeks
Tips for good quarantine:

Quarantine any new birds for 4-6 weeks to ensure good health
Ensure the quarantine area is at least 10 meters away from the original flock
Always handle and feed the original flock before the new one to avoid the transfer of any new diseases to the old flock
Use veterinary parasite treatment and repeat in 2 weeks if unsure
If droppings unformed, take a sample to the veterinarian to check for parasites and treat with veterinary-approved worm treatment
Vaccinate
Trim the nails
Following quarantine, disinfect the environment, food bowls, perches with an appropriate solution and leave it free of any animals for at least a week.

We have been advised of a black and tan dog (kelpie x type) with a white chest has been in Greens Bush near Main Ridge Pony Club for the last couple of days. It has been sighted a couple of times on walking tracks and potentially chasing roos.

Very anxious and scared but no one has been able to get near it so far.

Please share to see if we can find its owner!
