Position boxes are not only a fantastic tool for training assistance dogs but are also beneficial for all dogs! 🐶 When we work in the position box, we focus on our dogs' movements, promoting fluid motion without them stepping forward with their front paws. This ensures they’re using their training space effectively. Proper movement is vital for a dog’s health. A fluid drop from a stand is much better for their body than a sit drop, helping maintain muscle engagement and reducing injury risks. Now, why are position boxes especially beneficial for assistance dogs? Think about it: when these dogs are out in public, like at a checkout line, they must manage their space effectively to avoid being a hazard to themselves or others. By training them to fold into a drop from a stand, we ensure they remain calm and controlled, without walking forward or backward.
