Why did the chicken cross the road?
To go to the vet because she fractured her toes from doing zoomies 🫢🥲

Meet Chicko! The sweetest gal, with a big personality.
She was having so much fun running around on the concrete that she slipped. Her mum noticed that her longest toes were very swollen and bruised so brought her to the clinic.

After doing x-rays it was quite clear that she had a dislocation and a fracture.

After some innovative thinking, the vet turned a couple of ear swabs into splints and Chicko was able to walk more comfortably.

EAR INFECTIONS 🙉

Ear infections are a common problem in many animals, especially dogs and cats. One of the main reasons is the anatomy of their ears - pets have a vertical ear canal that makes it easier for bacteria, yeast, and other microorganisms to get trapped and grow. Other factors that can contribute to ear infections include allergies, foreign objects in the ear, excessive moisture, and poor ear hygiene. It’s important to take preventative measures and have your pet’s ears checked regularly to avoid any potential infections.

Some common signs of ear infections in animals include shaking of the head, scratching at the ears, redness or swelling of the ear canal, and discharge or odour from the ear.
If left untreated, ear infections can lead to more serious health problems, such as hearing loss.
It’s important to seek veterinary care if you suspect your pet has an ear infection, as prompt treatment can help prevent complications and reduce discomfort.

Does your pet get chronic ear infections?

Lets meet the cheeky Lil Z, he presented to the clinic for straining to urinate and ended up having a blockage.

A urinary blockage in cats is a condition where the urethra, the tube that carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body, becomes blocked. This blockage can be caused by crystals, stones, mucus, or other materials that accumulate in the urethra and prevent the passage of urine- in male cats this is an emergency.

When a cat’s urethra becomes blocked, they are unable to urinate normally, which can cause a buildup of toxins in their body and lead to serious health problems and/or be fatal. Urinary blockages are most common in male cats, and symptoms may include straining to urinate, frequent trips to the litter box, and blood in the urine.

Thankfully, Lil Z is back home with his mum and feeling a lot more comfortable.

Has your cat ever been blocked? What do you do to manage their day-to-day life?

DENTAL DISEASE 🪥

Dental disease is a common problem affecting not only humans but our beloved animal companions too. It often lurks unnoticed until it progresses to advanced stages.

Similar to humans, animal dental disease primarily stems from the buildup of plaque and tartar on teeth due to poor dental hygiene. Bacteria present in plaque thrive in the warm, moist environment of the mouth, leading to inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and eventually deterioration of the bony sockets that support each tooth.

Recognising the signs of dental disease in animals can be challenging, as they may instinctively hide discomfort or pain. However, you may notice symptoms such as bad breath, swollen or bleeding gums, difficulty eating, pawing at the mouth, or even loose or missing teeth. Left untreated, dental disease can result in chronic pain, tooth abscesses, oral infections, and even systemic health problems affecting vital organs such as the heart and kidneys.

Implementing a regular dental care routine is essential, including daily brushing with pet-friendly toothpaste, providing dental chews or toys for chewing, and scheduling professional dental cleanings under veterinary supervision. Additionally, feeding a balanced diet and avoiding excessive sugary treats can help maintain oral health.

Come along with us and meet Obi! 🐾

His mum noticed that he was quite lame at home and his leg was sore if extended outward.

With the help of X-rays, he was diagnosed with a fully torn cruciate ligament and it was decided that a TPLO would be the best procedure for his recovery.

Dr Andy was able to successfully perform the procedure and Obi was instantly feeling better. He is now weight-bearing with ease and is even trying to do zoomies to stress his mum out!

But now he can chase the sun spots pain-free, and go back to his sleepy doggo self 💤

FELINE VACCINATIONS 🐱💉

PLEASE NOTE: there is a nationwide shortage of the feline vaccination, this is due to a manufacturing issue.
We will notify owners once we can resume booking as usual.

We will still remind you when your cat is overdue but you will notice it says we are unable to make any bookings at this time due to low stock.

The vaccination covers Feline Panleukopaenia, Feline Rhinotracheitis, and Feline Calicivirus. Common symptoms of these viruses are; bloody diarrhoea, vomiting, severe upper respiratory disease, sneezing, nasal discharge and/or conjunctivitis. 🤧

Indoor cats who have previously had multiple boosters are at a very low risk as immunity doesn’t immediately drop off, so being slightly overdue is okay unless medically advised otherwise.

🦘WILDLIFE🦅
Did you know that veterinary clinics will accept injured wildlife and treat them at no cost to you?

What happens when you bring in wildlife?
We will ask you to fill out some information as this helps us and carers release them back to the same area.

Sometimes it can be hard to tell if an animal is injured. You are more than welcome to bring it in to be assessed, but we may ask you to return it back to its home if it is clinically well!

Otherwise, after some treatment and cuddles, we will find a carer to nurse them until they are ready to be released back into the wild.

Have you ever found wildlife? What animal was it?

ELIZABETHIAN COLLAR 📡
Also known as e-collar, cone of shame, satellite dish or dinner plate.

Commonly used after surgeries, they are the most effective way of creating a physical barrier between your pet and the wound.
In order to work properly it needs to be the correct size, this means that your pet’s muzzle cannot reach over the edge of the collar. You must not trim down the length otherwise you jeopardise it being the wrong size and not working.

There are many different options, although not all may be suitable for your pet.

• Some pets aren’t fans of traditional collars as they can bang into walls and spook them. Often, they will get used to it and work out how to do things with the cone on
• Soft collars are a great alternative to the traditional ones as they are more malleable and moves around your pet. This however, can enable your pet to move it out the way to get to the area.
• As comfortable as the inflatable collar’s looks they’re not as practical and generally don’t do a good job stopping licking, biting or scratching.

Has your pet needed a collar? Which one did you use?
