Itโ€™s warming up! ๐Ÿฅต

As the temperature begins to soar here in North Queensland itโ€™s important that weโ€™re conscious of how the heat is affecting our pets, and know what you can implement to make them more comfortable over summer. Prolonged or excessive exposure to high temperatures can cause heat stress in our pets, and in severe cases, heat stroke.

Heatstroke Symptoms to watch for:
- Intense panting or difficulty breathing
- Drooling, thick saliva or foaming at the mouth
- Change in gum colour
- Rapid heart rate
- Weakness, lethargy, or confusion
- Vomiting or diarrhea

If you suspect your pet is suffering from heat stroke:
- Move your pet to a cool area immediately. Begin active cooling by gently wetting them down, and if possible, have a fan blowing over them to assist in evaporative cooling. Do not use ice baths.
- Offer small amounts of water.
- Transport to your local clinic or emergency vet ASAP for ongoing support and management.

What can we do to provide a safe environment in this heat?
โœ…Always provide fresh, cool water
โœ…Provide a shaded area with adequate ventilation (avoid garages and indoor areas if air-conditioning is not available)
โŽAvoid exercise and limit full sun exposure in the heat of the day (between 10am-4pm).
โŽEven on mild days, temperatures in vehicles can reach dangerous levels in minutes. Never leave your pet in the car.

PS: We clocked this temperature this week on a Townsville road at 3pm - while the air temp might feel like it's cooling, the asphalt will hold the heat! Please be mindful of your pet's paws ๐ŸŒž

๐Ÿ”ด Paralysis Ticks! ๐Ÿ”ด

Are your pets up to date with their tick prevention?

Paralysis ticks pose a significant health risks risks to animals, with early identification and prompt action being crucial to preventing severe complications (including death!). We hear all too often that pet owners have "never had an issue with ticks" - but did you know that ticks can be brought into your yard by other animals? This includes possums, kangaroos, bandicoots.. the list goes on!

โ—๏ธDid you know that fully engorged female tick will lay between 2000-3000 eggs?

Key Symptoms of Tick Paralysis:

* Difficulty walking or coordination issues (especially in the hind legs) ๐Ÿ•
* Progressive weakness or paralysis
* Breathing difficulties, coughing, or gagging
* Vomiting, lethargy, or a sudden loss of appetite
* Change in vocalization, such as a hoarse bark or meow

What to Do if You Find a Tick:

๐ŸŸข Carefully remove the tick using fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool. Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull gently but steadily. If you cannot remove the tick, immediate seek veterinary care.
๐ŸŸข Keep the tick in a sealed container for identification purposes.
๐ŸŸขSeek immediate veterinary care โ€“ early intervention can prevent life-threatening paralysis and other complications. Early administration of tick anti-serum gives your pet the best chance of survival.
๐ŸŸขRegularly inspect your pets, especially after outdoor activities in tick-prone areas.

It is important to note that while we strive to provide the best veterinary care that we can on the road, tick anti-serum and ongoing care must be provided in a clinic to ensure that appropriate monitoring and safety measures can be put in place. We are unable to offer this service, and recommend contacting your nearest clinic! ๐Ÿพ

R U OK?

Today is R U OK? day, which a day designed to provoke conversation and checking in with those around us to make sure we're all doing okay. It's a simple question that can make a huge difference.

Whether it's a friend, family member, or colleague, take a moment to ask, "R U OK?" and really listen to their response. Sometimes just knowing someone cares can be incredibly uplifting, and we may be able to direct them to resources if we need to.

To our colleagues out there in the veterinary community that are also working tirelessly to ensure that pets are well taken care of, thank you for your compassion and dedication. Please check in with your colleagues, team members and support staff - it's too important not to. Remember, it's okay to reach out for support and take time for self-care, and most importantly - it's okay to not be okay.๐Ÿ’›

Did you know that in Australia alone, for every one vet, there's 2,062 pets - and that doesn't include horses, wildlife, and livestock!

There couldn't have been a better first day back at work on Tuesday for Dr. Taylah, who gave these 8 gorgeous babies their first vaccinations and microchips (with plenty of cuddles of course).

It's recommended that all puppies recieve their first vaccinations at 6-8 weeks, then 10-12 weeks, and finally 14-16 weeks. This ensures that your pup gains immunity against life threatening diseases, including Parvovirus.

Microchipping ensures that you can be contacted if your pet escapes or is lost, and is an integral part to responsible pet ownership ๐Ÿถ

If you'd like some more information on these pups, please message the page for contact information.

**Cat vaccines!**

We're excited to let you know that we've managed to secure a limited, small amount of F3 vaccines until the next order arrives, which will hopefully be within the next few weeks. Unfortunately this does not include the FIV vaccine as this is anticipated to arrive in August.

Why are cat vaccinations important?
Much like dogs, cats are susceptible to viruses that can make them very unwell. The governing body for veterinary vaccinations, the World Small Animal Veterinary Association (WSAVA), recommends all cats - indoor and outdoor - receive at least an F3 vaccination annually as it is considered a "core" vaccine. It is also important to know that all catteries and kennels require an up-to-date F3 vaccination prior to entry.

What does an F3 cover?
โ€ข Feline Panleukopenia (intestinal virus, can be fatal. From the Parvovirus family!)
โ€ข Feline Calicivirus (upper respiratory/oral disease)
โ€ข Feline Rhinotracheitis virus (upper respiratory infection)

For more information, or to secure a an F3 vaccination for your cat/s today, you can call or text on 0459 090 783 or email us at [email protected]

Have you noticed that the cooler weather has resulted in your pet slowing down, showing increased joint stiffness and reluctancy to get out of bed? It is estimated that up to 80% of dogs will have experienced some degree of arthritis by the age of 8 years, making it the number one cause of chronic pain in pets.

If you notice your pet showing any of the signs below, or you're concerned that your pet might be in pain, give us a call today.

You can also self-assess with the document link below that is kindly provided by the team at Canine Arthritis Resources and Education (CARE).

I am delighted to introduce you to NQ Vets Mobile's new veterinarian Dr Taylah Burgess!

Taylahโ€™s love of animals originates back to her days growing up in Brisbane where she was lucky enough to have dogs, cats and a little Arabian pony. After working as a Jillaroo in Central Queensland, she moved to Townsville to pursue her passion for being a Veterinarian at JCU.

Since graduation Taylah has worked in Far North Queensland in rural practice, however her love for the Townsville region has brought her back to town!
Taylah has an emphasis on fear-free, pain-free health care for her patients. She enjoys the variety of pets and people she gets to meet, and is excited to be able to continue provide outstanding mobile veterinary care with NQ Vets Mobile. In her spare time, Taylah can be found camping, fishing, or hanging out with her dog Arlo.

There will be no change to the telephone number which will continue to be 0459090783 and the email address for Dr Taylah will be [email protected]. There will also be a new bank account for direct debits which will be listed on invoices.

Stay tuned for Taylahโ€™s start date as we get the ball rolling again. An email will be sent with more information very soon.

Best wishes
Dr Alli Phillips
