My name is Theresa & with my husband Tony, and our Volunteers, we rescue injured & orphaned wildlife and domestic animals. The animals are cared for until they are ready to be released. We also answer calls from people with questions about wildlife, do talks at clubs & schools. This is done with no funding, only with donations from caring friends & the public, which we very much appreciate. As our

name gets around, we rescue more animals, it is getting harder to pay for everything. Petrol, formulas, hard feed, vet bills, medication, x-rays & pathology costs have all increased in the last few months. We have moved to a new, larger location and are still constructing suitable pens for all the animals that come here. If you can help, please follow the link to donate https://www.paypal.com/donate/?hosted_button_id=4KRSNNLA3AVB8
We so appreciate any help you can give us & all donations over $2 are tax deductible :) thank you xo

🦘 The Hidden Damage of Killing the Strongest Kangaroos

When shooters target the largest kangaroos in a mob, they’re not just taking one life — they’re disrupting an entire family structure that has existed for generations.

The dominant male plays a vital role in the stability and wellbeing of the mob. He maintains order, balance, and genetic strength. When he’s killed, chaos follows. Younger males compete for dominance, breeding accelerates, and the once-stable mob becomes fragmented and stressed.

This unnatural interference also damages the genetic diversity of kangaroo populations. In nature, predators take the weak or sick, ensuring the strongest genes carry forward. But when humans kill the strongest and healthiest individuals instead, we’re reversing nature’s process — weakening the gene pool and altering the natural evolution of the species.

These are not just numbers on a quota sheet — these are living, intelligent beings whose family bonds, behaviours, and survival instincts are deeply interconnected.

💔 Each shot fired at the top of the mob sends a ripple of imbalance through generations to come.
We are not managing wildlife — we are dismantling ecosystems.

It’s time to listen, learn, and respect the natural order — before our actions cause irreversible harm to the species that define this land.

💔

He was shot in the face, his jaw left hanging. His suffering the cost of doing business to the industry responsible for largest slaughter of land-based wildlife in the world.💔

After being spotted trying to drink from a puddle in Healesville earlier this week, Vets For Compassion were able to dart this badly injured kangaroo and give him a peaceful passing.

If you feel like you have déjà vu, that’s because Vets For Compassion have been called out to several cases in recent months where kangaroos have been shot in the face, completely unable to eat or drink.

The reality is that shooters often fail to kill with a single shot and many kangaroos suffer with painful injuries for days.

Research shows this could happen to as many as 40% of kangaroos killed.

Today is World Kangaroo Day, and while tourism ads celebrate this unique and precious native species, tonight they will once again be cruelly slaughtered, their families torn apart for profit.

Pledge never to buy kangaroo skin or body parts, and help us send a clear message to companies and lawmakers that kangaroos deserve protection, not cruelty: https://animalsaus.co/454mBmW

🐾 Another Heartbreaking Influx of Joeys 🐾

In just the past couple of weeks, we’ve seen a heartbreaking rise in the number of joeys coming into care — a clear reminder that more needs to be done to address the causes behind these increasing rescues. 💔

Every little one that arrives tells a story — of habitat loss, road trauma, fencing hazards, or human encroachment. The rise in fatalities over the past year isn’t just a statistic… it’s a sign that we must do better to protect our wildlife and their environment.

As carers, we do everything we can to give these precious joeys a second chance, but prevention is just as important as rehabilitation. 🌿

Please help spread awareness, slow down on our roads, keep pets under control, and advocate for stronger protections for our native species. Together, we can help stop the cycle. 🦘💚

🌏🦘 WORLD KANGAROO DAY – 24th October 🦘

Today we celebrate one of Australia’s most iconic and misunderstood animals — the kangaroo. ❤️

Kangaroos are not just a national symbol; they’re vital to our ecosystems. Their soft-footed grazing and natural movements help regenerate native grasses and keep the land healthy — a balance that’s been part of this country for thousands of years.

Sadly, kangaroos continue to face threats from habitat loss, road accidents, and mass culling. 💔 Every day, wildlife rescuers and carers across Australia work tirelessly to save injured joeys, advocate for humane treatment, and protect these gentle beings who call our land home.

Today is a reminder to honour, protect, and coexist with them. Speak up, share awareness, and support wildlife shelters and carers doing the ground work to give roos a fighting chance.

💚 Let’s stand for compassion, understanding, and a future where kangaroos are safe in their natural habitat.

This is a FACT SHEET. PLEASE READ AND SHARE as sadly, a significant number of people are unaware of the facts about our wildlife. A notable example is that kangaroos, like humans, can only have one offspring per year. Furthermore, more than 75 percent of kangaroos do not survive to adulthood. Additionally, it is interesting to note that 60 kangaroos can eat the same amount as one cow in a day, while 5 kangaroos eat the equivalent of one sheep. Kangaroos are soft-footed, which prevents them from damaging the ground. In my experience, the majority of the damage on my property is caused by rabbits, not kangaroos. The f***s of kangaroos act as a fertilizer for the ground. I could elaborate further on their habits, such as rotating their grazing areas to allow vegetation to regrow before returning. Everyone has access to Google, and I encourage you to verify these facts. The poster was designed by David, an exceptional young individual who is still deeply missed.

🌿 New Kids on the Block! 🌿

It’s been busy, busy, busy here over the past month — so many rescues! 🦘
We currently have four new joeys rewilding, and with the influx of little ones, some have been delighted out to other shelters to help balance age groups, boost survival rates, and ensure everyone gets the best possible care.

Our brave fence-hanger joey is now heading to Waterholes Wildlife Sanctuary to continue his rehabilitation journey. 💚

This is what true wildlife care is all about — networking, collaboration, and supporting one another to do what’s best for every individual animal. Together, we create better outcomes for our precious wildlife. 🌏💚

Our Story

My name is Theresa. My husband Tony and I rescue injured and orphaned wildlife. We also answer calls from people with questions about wildlife, and do talks at clubs and schools. We do all of this out of our own pockets. We have no funding apart from donations, which we really appreciate. As our name gets around, and we rescue more animals, it is getting harder to pay for everything. Petrol, formulas, hard feed, vet bills, medication, x-rays and pathology costs have all increased in the last few months. We are currently fundraising for the purchase of land in which to release the animals and still be able to monitor their progress. If you can help please follow the link to our website - http://ourhavenwildlifeshelter.org.au/donate/ We so appreciate any help you can give us and all donations over $2 are tax deductible :)
