London
Spitalfields Market
Saturday back to town
Spitalfields has these TWENTY adorable elephant sculptures based on real The Sheldrick Trust rescued elephants
Also a random goat statue?
Then the fabulous Brick Lane where I found my happy place - a very old fabric shop. The lovely gentleman had poor English (he’s had the shop since 1982 🤣) and had to call his wife but she soon helped
Love love love my purchases - 3m mauve/green dupion silk, 2m gold dupion and 2m of the softest apricot silk satin - total cost around $210!!!! (This is very cheap) Think I need to go back there!
Also Efe’s Turkish restaurants in Brick Lane - apparently around for a long time - must be making some money as this car had Efe on the number plate!

Burghley Castle
Home of the Burghley Horse Trials
A huge ‘country home’ near Stamford, still owned by same family since Elizabethan times
We wandered the garden including the private family South garden with its topiary (and automatic robot lawnmowers!)
Inside there were beautiful over the top decorated state rooms with painted ceilings. The stairwell or Hell Room has a huge depiction of hell - with a whole section devoted to women who suicided! 😠
The kitchen was enormous with huge sets of copper
The house is huge, and you don’t get to see too much of it - some of the family still live here
When the current Earl inherited it in the 50’s they had TWO ACRES of lead roofing to replace
The gardens were designed by Capability Brown
The Garden of Surprises had loads to f interesting features including fountains and mirrors and this big sundial
Also - they had a grave for their prize winning Bull - from the 1700’s - loved how they made more prize money back then!

Stamford
Another very old and pretty town with the river meandering through the middle - mobbed by ducks when I arrived cos someone else was feeding them!
Many beautiful old buildings and we had brekky in the tea shop with its funky window display and 400 year old rooms!
Found another bookshop - and a whole bookcase full of Wisdens! Poor Angus couldn’t decide which one he wanted….i should have chosen one from the Lillee years
Had breakfast, walked around, checked out a beautiful 2.1 carat diamond ring fro@an estate, but my husband balked at the price (30K £) 🤣

I know the rule “the camera eats first” but lately I keep forgetting! This does not mean I have not been eating….just this morning I noticed how much my pants have shrunk, must be the water 🤣
Anyway this is me tucking into a burger at The Kings Head Inn - it was ok, maybe a little dry and the meat patty too thick, maybe 3/5. Mollie had fish and chips - which was haddock and it was way too fishy 😒Especially compared to the fish (cod) I had on IOW which was really nice - and Peter had the Bream - 4/5
But (no photo) the sticky toffee pudding in Cotswolds was delicious! Sadly I couldn’t eat it all 😔
Peter also enjoyed the scone at Carisbrooke Castle - scones over here tend to be much heavier, denser, and often with fruit - very similar to my mums rock cakes! (Not a criticism, these are yummy, mum is just v well known for not being able to make fluffy light scones)
Also - flapjacks
I would think a flapjack is like a pikelet or little pancake - nope
They’re everywhere and probably best described as a muesli slice - very similar to an ANZAC slice, but with finer oats. Anyway this one was on IOW and was v nice.
Off to bed soon, just need to taste test today’s purchases - Baklava!

Back to the mainland…
After returning to Mozs house in S London for a little rest and a quick catch up atThe Cyclist Pub again, we headed off on another adventure!
The Cotswolds
Picked up Mollie and headed North East, first stop Oxford - this is the garden near the Church
Spent the night at the delightful Kings Head Inn at Bledington. 100% recommend this beautiful old country pub - and yes they provided biscuits!
The next day we continued our tour of the Cotswolds visiting Stow-on-the-Wold, Bibury, Burford and Bourton on the Water it was warm and sunny and drowning in tourists! But very pretty countryside
We drove straight past Clarksons Diddly Squat Pub on the first day! Lucky we went back and checked it out (might have spent so many £ they gave me a free tote bag 😜) Peter had a beer. Its a big place, huge beer garden and good view, but the size of the car park hints at how busy it gets
Next day we went to see the Farm - and so did 30,000 other tourists. Lucky we bought all our souvenirs at the pub the day before because the queue just to get in the shop was 100m long!
Farmer Pete took the opportunity to check out (and critique) the sowing - noticing a big missed patch in the middle! Good to visit, but didn’t see anyone famous
Recommend a visit to the Cotswolds

Osborne House
Built by/for Queen Victoria??? Her and the family spent a lot of time here, but after her hubby died she never visited again. There are detailed painted ceilings and loads of antiques but it’s really a big country family house - with a view down to a beach and across to Portsmouth. The Durbar wing houses a papier mache decorated ceiling and loads of amazing Indian artefacts and paintings- the detail is phenomenal
It is set in lovely open parkland with lovely gardens but the walled garden is also really lovely, and the plants are huge and healthy. The artichokes were 6 foot tall!
Yes I did chase several bumble bees for a good shot - they are so cute!

Isle of Wight
After a couple of days rest (and washing!) in London, we joined our lovely hosts Moz and Simon for a mini break on the beautiful Isle of Wight
While it looks beautiful it wasn’t that warm, and despite encouragement I did not join Moz in the beautiful blue clear water - of course the day we left it got up to the 30s!!!!
More photos to come from our quick visit but for starters:
The beautiful Priory Bay
Views from Mozs house
The ferry crossing - tall white curly building in background is in Portsmouth
The beach goes a long way out at low tide - you can almost walk out to one of the Napoleon era fortresses
Cruise ship - saw 4 go past on Sunday morning and loads of cargo ships heading out to English Channel
View from Seagrove Bay pub for dinner
Video from when Peter missed the turn to the castle and we had to go on epic pretty detour to get back
Carisbrooke Castle 800 years old, maybe more. Charles 1 was imprisoned here
The donkeys are famous
Spent ages checking out the castle then drove to The Needles - a bit like a white version of the 12 Apostles - didn’t walk out to them (still hobbling also it was late and v windy and cool)
This is also the site where Mr Marconi relayed first radio message to a ship off shore
Returned home via southern side of Isle, checked out beautiful views including chalk cliffs
Next day off to Osborne House - next message

Last night in Paris
Sound ON
Fete de la Musique
Annual music festival held on the streets of Paris on June 21
Everywhere across the city there was music
We were in the Marais- Latin Quarter for drinks when a lady in the side street started singing - you can also hear a band in the background across the square singing Zombi
We caught the packed train back to Montmarte to try and catch the sunset from Sacre Coeur (boring due to cloud cover and massive crowd)
The streets were heaving
Families, kids, backpackers, tourists and locals everyone was out dancing
This drumming troop were at the base of the Sacre Coeur stairs
There were DJs outside bars and in side streets
Mollie was very happy when we stumbled into this house/street party, so we went and got drinks and came back!
Fireworks and flares going off and people climbing on cars and awnings, kids throwing witches hats, and everyone dancing
I’ve never claimed to be a great dancer, but I was also doing this with a very swollen toe! So not moving my feet at all 🤣
It was stinking hot, noisy, crowded and sweaty - and I had the best time hanging out with my daughter ( did tap out a bit early)
Despite all the mayhem - everyone was getting along and didn’t see a single cop!
Next day we were up at 830 getting ready to leave - and the streets were clean! It was unbelievable- they were our washing the streets and picking up the rubbish so early
Sadly last day in France, but it was magic and can’t wait to go back 😳

Day 6
Last Parisian meals 😔
As tempting as the frog legs, snails and oysters were (not) we went somewhat also traditional
Pierre had steak and chips 🤣
Mollie had the burrata - it was very nice
And I had a glass of Moet with my crepes Suzette flambé with Grand Marnier - delish though the waiter gave up trying to light the Grand Marnier and just poured it straight over 🤣
Still 4/5
This was all enjoyed in the Latin Quarter- the Marais - which was the start of our last night adventure- more soon
Also of course we visited Pain Pain for one final pastry treat - I forgot to photo it all - we got 3 boxes full and a baguette! This is the chocolate and vanilla flans and the apricot crumble …. Not photographed- strawberry tart (of course), citron tart, Paris Brest, opera cake, chocolate something and coffee eclair (my new fave) All amazing, sadly broken toe preventing active exercise so might have to reconsider cake reviews for a while….

So those of you who know me well would be expecting something like this!
The unexpected was that it took so long!
Friday morning in our Paris apartment I kicked the corner hob on the shower - and broke my toe! I’m not sure the husband and child believed me at first, and tbh I am an absolute trooper cos I walked all round Paris Friday (18,000 steps) and Saturday (21,000 steps) with a limp and very little complaint!
Sunday got back to London and foot not looking so good so after phone call w insurance and nagging from Moz went to hospital- x-ray confirmed what I felt!
And shout out to the team at St Margaret’s who were all very busy, but I was in and out with a taped up toe in less than 3 hours - I know NHS cops a lot of flack, but I was treated very well
*its not too sore, I can walk with solid shoes, just keeping it taped
**also cute Parisian dog

Day 6
It was a cracker! Did I mention the heat! 34 felt like closer to 40 🥵
We started our last full day the correct way, breakfast (same again) at Adelaide’s in Montmarte - and sorry for the half eaten photo - but this was THE BEST croissant I have ever eaten - literally melted in the mouth
Awesome- sadly the French butter (unsalted) let it down 😕
We didn’t do too much in the morning, walked around spending too many € on crappy souvenirs (it’s my specialty area)
Went on a cruise of the Seine to see things from different angle - even saw someone bathing in it 🤮
Will do a separate post for our last night in Paris - it was HUGE
Also - Paris and London - dogs on trains - was impressed with this one - 1130 at night!
